Although the other reviews are correct: the sandy beach is too far away and it is not very convenient if you do not have a car, there is no bar or food after 3pm, and the salon, spa, and yoga are "on demand" outside people who come when requested. That being said... We enjoyed our stay very much. We took a cab to santa Teresa to surf and enjoy the beach and then relaxed at the pool or on our hammocks in the afternoon/evening. when we were at beija flor we felt so relaxed and felt so secluded, it was great! The pool is small but it was quiet and a great place to see wildlife, there were birds, monkeys, and iguanas all around. If u want beach front property or something fancy this is not it. But if you have a car or don't mind taking a taxi to the beach (or a very nice and very long walk - it is possible to walk the beach all the way from Santa Teresa to beija flor) then this is a great place to get away from it all and relax.

TAs per the recent reviews this place needs a change...It is nothing like what the Beija Flor Resort website describes. It is far from being a resort, it does not offer any services such as yoga, beauty etc. If you do not have a car this place is too far to walk in the heat and dust. The beach across the road (when you walk through other properties) is rocky and difficult to swim or surf....teh breakfast was basic and none of it, and the resturant closes at 3pm therefore no room service NOTHING also, no drink/food service by the pool - very disappointing in general!

At approximately $100 a night it is NOT WORTH IT there are many better located and better value for money places in the area.......

Did not enjoy my stay at all.....seeing Howler Monkeys was cool though!

When we prepared our stay in Mal Pais we followed the reviews on TA and Lonely Planet. The best recommended place would be Beija Flor, so we booked it early in April, for six nights, not to risk they would be fully booked in December. We checked absolutely everything on this place of "paradise and luxury", yoga and massage and near the beach". Nothing of this is true! The nearby beach s rocky and polluted. The rooms have zero luxury, only a bed with a mosquito net full with holes. Neither a mini bar nor a fridge. No sofa or a chair in the room to sit on. There is not even a wardrobe to put up your clothes. The rooms are VERY basic and not maintained very well and you do not get a clean feeling. Not to forget, the rooms are very noisy, you can hear your neighbour breath.,the bathroom is outdoors, which give you a cool impression, but they lack of any luxury. No hot water at the sink. Our shower did not give cold water (the tap was broken) so we could not adjust the temperature. My husband burned his back when h took his first shower. The common areas are very poorly equipped and do neither offer any comfort nor privacy. There is one little sofa that sits 3 people. The rest has to sit on straight chairs of the breakfast tables with no comfort. The pool area give a nice impression, but when you look a bit better, is poorly maintained and not clean. There are only six wooden sun beds that need to be urgently reprinted and they miss a mattress to give some comfort. During our stay, the pool got cleaned only once, the morning we left..... There was no yoga possible, since the area got damaged during a recent 'earthquake" the same for the spa and massage area. Well, a good manager would get it fixed urgently before the Christmas holidays! Not at Beija Flor. The breakfast which is included in the rate of $ 130 per night, is the poorest we have ever seen. You get 2 eggs and 1 toast. The first breakfast took 45 minutes before we got it. And the eggs were hard as stone. At night the place is very poorly lit, too dark and no music in the bar area. Who cares, the bar is never open. After our strong complaints, the manager gave us the self standing bungalow as an upgrade, but it did not change anything to our feelings if the poor level of standard. We wanted to leave, but we were trapped since we had to prepay our complete stay. The place lacks if management, the manager is hardly ever there. He comes at 8 am to drink his coffee and leaves around 9 am with his surf boards......
The place has completely lost it. Do not stay here, it ruins your days in Mal Pais. There are many better places!

We were so excited by the write up in lonely planet about this place that we pre-paid the full amount of our stay in advance. It was the biggest disappointment of our holidays in wonderful Costa Rica. The place needs a new manager urgently. There is not enough to eat at breakfast, they only start at 8am, an hour after the hungry guests start waiting. The 'included breakfast is the poorest I have ever seen, one toast and two eggs. You have to beg for butter, salt etc. Any extra item is 8 dollars! The coffee is dreadful, the orange juice comes out of a cheap pack with lots of water, there are not enough napkins. There is neither yoga nor spa as advertised. We begged for our money back after 3 nights which the manager refused. There is neither a restaurant nor a bar. the pool did not get cleaned. They have 6 lounge chairs for 32 guests and no relaxing communal area. This place is a con. There are other great places to stay in Mal Pais such as moana lounge next door.

My husband and I traveled to Mal Pais for our honeymoon in Nov-Dec 2012. We booked a house high up in the mountains off of vrbo. The place we booked was a disaster; the house was not cared for, the pool was dirty, there were scorpions in our shower, ect. We took all we could and then drove down the hill and stayed at Beija Flor. They saved our honeymoon. There is a reason you book your vacation at a resort. The staff was amazing. We quickly made friends with them and it was so fun to see them around town! They were able to tell us all the best places to go and upon their recommendation, we had a great meal at Pasta Basta & got to know the surf breaks. We had a great breakfast at their peaceful little eatery surrounded by Iguanas, monkeys and the coolest looking squirrels we have ever seen. They made us feel so welcomed and at home. The room was so nice as well. It smelled great, was very clean, had air conditioning and no insects! The bed was super comfy and it was nice to have our own patio to sit out on and sip our drinks while watching the sunset and monkeys! Next time we'd love to take advantage of their spacious yoga deck and massage huts in the back of the property! Thank you, Beija Flor for your hospitality and friendship! Pura Vida! Chase & Jessica

This is just the beginning so I'll update my review as this nightmare progresses. My wife and I have been on a long journey through Costa Rica and were really looking forward to finishing our trip at a peaceful resort in Mal Pais. Long story short, so far this place overcharges and lies about the amenities. We were both looking forward to relaxing here with the restaurant that got rave reviews and some in house yoga as the Beija Flor promotes. I'll just stick with that part of the review for now. THE RESTAURANT IS OPEN ONLY FROM 8(?) - 3 PM DAILY. IT ADVERTISES THAT IT'S OPEN UNTIL MIDNIGHT. THERE IS NO YOGA. NONE. HASN'T BEEN SINCE SEPTEMBER PER THE BEYOND NICE RECEPTION GIRL. Now that's been said, I can continue. When we asked the guy (manager/owner?) at the restaurant what time they stop serving dinner, he said 3 PM. I knew I had read differently and he stated that it's been closing early for close to a year and only opens in the evenings around the peak season and that's only 3 nights for ONE WEEK OF THE ENTIRE YEAR. He stated that it was costing too much to keep open in the evening. Both my wife and I were irritated because this threw a wrench in our plans. We were planning on doing spa treatments, eating at the hotel, and doing yoga. Chilling.

So now we have to drive and find food. No big deal right? Wrong. This place is close to 2 miles to town. Nothing is walkable. We're both in great shape and it's just not happening. Anyway, we looked at the menu, since they were open and ordered two expressos.

The expresso machine was broken and he had no plans to fix it.

Ok.

That's fine. Just another drive as we've driven almost the entire country on this trip and this was supposed to be our relaxing part

We get our stuff to go eat and ask the front desk about the yoga schedule?

Hell Yeah!

YOGA IS NO MAS!

You hear that??!!

There is NO YOGA and hasn't been since September.

My wife is trying not to freak out because this is just FALSE ADVERTISING.

We paid a premium to stay here.

They lie (so far) in getting clients in here with the promise of candle light dinners and yoga. Steps from the beach.

Steps.

Steps?

Down a main road, right down the muddy road.

Cut through someones property or campsite.

Killer man!

Rocky beach in front of a camp ground!

Couldn't be better!

So cool getting ripped off and let down like this.

On our first night. I'm sitting in a hammock, instead of with my chick, blogging about this overpriced POS.

Yes the grounds are pretty nice.

As in landscaping, flora and fauna.

No you're not close to the beach. There is no walking up from the beach into your room without it taking 7 - 10 minutes down a muddy driveway and cutting through a campsite. NONE

THERE IS NO YOGA!

THE RESTAURANT CLOSED AT 3 PM.

This places has false advertising. Charges like a resort. Doesn't seem to care at all. Almost as cool as a room with a bunch of over-steroided (word?) sweaty dudes with their shirts off, fist-bumping.
-
You get the drift.

I'm still working on speaking with a manager or owner. I'll keep this updated on Day #1 of #3.

Trying to stay positive.

Oh!! The rooms do smell wonderful. No sarcasm.

Room Tip: #ProTip Don't stay the the Beija Flor.
