“Great time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

After a lengthy delay in getting there, the manager (Kevin - nicaraguan) met me about 9 pm on Sunday and got me all settled in. The hotel is right next door to some campgrounds and they were carrying on, which is fine unless you are trying to sleep. i was so tired anyway, i don't remember my head hitting the pillow, but another guest told me that he went over and told them to turn it down. Kevin and his wife and son live there as well, and they work hard. They don't need to be up all night either because they prep each continental breakfast fresh. It was filling, hit the spot, coffee was great.
The room was adequate for what I needed it for, sleeping, showering etc. 5 star it is not, but clean with hot water on the shower yes. By the way, that does need a little explanation, since how hot the water gets on the shower is dependent on the flow, in that if the water is on full, you never get the benefit of the hot water...takes a little bit of experimenting and for a couple of days i had tap water coolness for showers.
Pool is small with fine for cooling off with, beach is right there. You can watch the surfers at the high tides cut the waves. I enjoyed some time playing water gun fights in the pools with Kevin's boy of about 4 or 5. He seems to hit the pool about 3-4 each day and he loves it when you pay him some attention.
Guests come from all over the world, i met an Argentinean, Americans, Italians, Spaniards and yes some Ticans as well.
Overall Esterillos Oueste can be a ghost town during the week, but picks up on the weekends when everybody comes it.

“Beautiful Beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

This hotel was a good value and provided basically what we needed. It is about 20 minutes from Jaco which we stopped at on the way. It is completely the opposite of Jaco. It's quiet and not touristy at all, perfect for us. The beach was steps from our room. The rooms were basic, the shower wasn't very good. It was only $70 and included breakfast which was nice. The manager was very pleasant. I would stay here again just for the location. There is a pool which is tiny but it was nice for relaxing and hanging out.

“Dolce Vita the best in Playa Esterillos”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

I arrived in Playa Esterillos around 9 pm. at night everything was dark OMG! I said to myself .... I started to walk not knowing my surrondings at all .... I arrived at a Covenience Store and ask for Dolce Vita Hotel and they gave me directions .... Emilio was waiting for me and walked me to my room. The room very simple but had everything you need it Kitchen, fridge, plates, pots, cutlery, living and dining room, bathroom, double bed, tv, a/c what else you need ? food ! convenience store five minutes walking! The hotel is right on the beach you can hear the sound of the waves all day long !! Restaurants three or four around. You can walk to the hwy and take a bus to Jaco Beach and spend the day there too. Jaco Beach not safe at night. Esterillos beach thousand times better than Jaco. I had an amazing time and would love to come back. Thank you Emilio for all your help. Regards from Canada.

Room Tip: the front rooms have ocean view directly

“Location was great. Hotel was OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

We started our trip in Arenal, this was the 2nd part of our stay, and then we finished up our vacation in Manuel Antonio. We wanted to stay at a place that was on the ocean but were unfamiliar with the area. We wanted to stay near our final destination of Manuel Antonio and we had heard that Jaco was very busy and touristy. So we decided to find something near Jaco. Esterillos sounded really nice and the reviews I read from others said they liked the area.

BEACH:

The beach was beautiful. There was hardly anyone on the beach and it was great for long walks and finding shells. There were several tidal pool areas where the water was nice to take a dip in without getting pounded by the waves. The surf was really great and there were a few surfers out. (I had read this was a great surfing area, but didn't see quite as many surfers as I thought I would.) My kids enjoyed the beach as well and had fun playing in the surf. We saw macaws several times both on the beach and while driving on the road.

LOCATION:

The area around the hotel was very poor and rural and there was only 1-2 restaurants in walking distance of the hotel. The food was pretty good and the service was good, but for the 2 days we were in Esterillos, there wasn't much variety in the restaurants.

HOTEL:

The hotel itself was a small 6-apartment unit. The rooms were pretty small, but at least they had a small kitchen with a sink, refrigerator, and pull out couch for the kids. They had a pool as well. It wasn't very big, but the kids enjoyed it. The breakfast each day was very good. It consisted of different items every day. One day we had eggs, sausage, and toast, along with coffee, and the other day we had beans and rice and fresh fruit.

COST:

The cost I thought was a little high per night at $70, based on what we got. There was little in the way of amenities, with the exception of the daily breakfast. There was only 1-2 other guests staying at the hotel at the same time as we were there and hey mostly kept to themselves. Like in the other reviews I read, if you're looking for a place to stay where you can stay "cheap" and surf, this is for you. Otherwise you may be a little disappointed with the spartan accommodations.

OVERALL:

Overall, if I had a choice to stay here again, I wouldn't. It was OK at best and there certainly wasn't much to do in the area. The saving grace for us was that we knew we would be staying at a much nicer place when we arrived in Manuel Antonio. And for $70/night, I thought it was a little overpriced. I would think somewhere along the lines of $40-50/night max would be more appropriate.
