“Surf package w/stay for $14!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2014

$10/ night for a room in the heart of the city is golden if you ask me. Any city actually. The things that makes this place special are listed here for ease of reading:

1. Rooftop Chillin: There is a sweet rooftop to hang out on and watch the sunset from or to jump off of into the pool ;)

2. $4USD All day surf package to the playa: They provide surfboard, transportation to a nearby location with great waves, beach side lounge chairs to set your things down, shirts to keep your nipples from falling off and they take you back to your room when you're finished. Come and go as many times a day as you want. They even have their own photographer that can capture your surf session for you if you want (price unknown).

3. Half block from the "strip": Bars, restaurants, ATMs, convenience stores, art galas, dance clubs, beach with fiery red sunsets that will blow your mind, and close to the supermarket if you're staying longer.

4. Hammocks are awesome, and hey have them here.

5. Don't expect fancy, enjoy the trip!

This hostel is quite basic, but very close to the beach. Rooms are kind of tidy and clean. To be expected for the price though. Bit hard to get to the room through a small alleyway though. The pool is brilliant. Service of people is kind.

Stayed here a couple weeks ago for 5 nights. This hostel is ideal for all types of purposes. It is just half a block from the beach on one side and half a block from restaurant and shops on the other side. Somehow, despite being right in the middle of all the action, it is still quiet to sleep at night. In my opinion, this hostel is better than nearby locations within the budget price range because of the pool and the accessibility it provides for surfing, riding bicycles, and doing other activities. It is partnered with The Surfer Factory, so if you're looking to have a surf vacation and do other fun stuff, they facilitate that experience tremendously. We met people staying in nearby expensive hotels that wanted to switch their reservations because Hotel de Haan was so awesome. Last but not least, the hostel owner is very cool and helpful. We were two females travelling alone and we never once had a problem with security or safety of any kind. Highly recommend staying here!

The best part about the hostel was the lovely gentleman working in the office who was very friendly and accommodating. I felt safe leaving my things locked up in their storage lockers overnight, however I could see it being slightly irritating if you wanted to get something out in a hurry as you need to go find someone working in the office to be able to get out your stuff. The pool was a nice bonus to chill out in, and I was stoked to have ceiling fans to help cool down the warm room at night time, especially when there was four other people sleeping in the same room as me. The hostel is cheap and close to the beach, and there's a sweet cafe next door, but I just got a bit of a stagnant vibe whilst staying here - not as much social interaction going on. People staying here appeared to be more interested in getting in and getting out.

We had planned to stay at a different hotel that was recommneded in Lonely Planet but it somehow wanished since the 2012 guide was published, so we resorted to staying at Hotel de Haan which was nearby.

The five-bed dorm was spacious and functional, the two ceiling fans provided at least some cooling as there was no A/C. The bathroom had a large shower, a sink and a toilet, but it also featured a small troupe of cockroaches. I was too tired to kick a fuss, but the cockroaches just shouldn't be there. $10 per night or not.

On the other hand, the location is great. The beach is stone throw's away and so is the commercial strip with all its bars and trinket shops. The reasonably sized pool was a nice bonus as it was great for cooling down in the evening.

Two and a half stars.

It was the cheapest in town by 15$ a night, and the rooms were better then the more expensive ones. NO AC, but ceiling fans Shared Kitchen, 7ft Pool, Hammocks, block away from the beach and damn need in the middle of the strip.

Room Tip: Upstairs seems to be a little more cool on hotter nights
