I heard from our rental owner that this place (previously known as sabores lejanos or something) was highly recommended and had "the best bread in town". Unfortunately, ALL the bread they make is essentially bolillo. They all have that same soft chewy crumb with a soft, pliable exterior. It's great bolillo bread, but it is NOT artisanal bread! I bought a "sourdough" loaf that looked and tasted exactly like a gigantic bolillo roll. I also tried the "ciabatta"... Again, bolillo. I was extremely disappointed. It's very straightforward to make good, simple French bread (crisp crust and good hole structure). So... why can't this bakery churn out decent sourdough or ciabatta or a basic baguette? I understand that this is Costa Rica, not France or Italy, but don't sell items called "ciabatta" or "sourdough" if they really are not. That said, the owners were really nice and the cafe is extraordinarily cute. I just wish the bread lived up to the hype.
