We visited Costa Rica just last week. We booked the Villa couple months ago with Frank & Adele based on some positive online reviews, and this is our 1st time visiting Costa Rica, and we always prefer B&B, boutique hotels with our own kitchenette (so we are not forced to eat out /fast food every meal). Just before we left town, Frank emailed us about the change of ownership but assured us the transition will be smooth and they would keep all arrangement as plan. Although we weren't too comfortable about it, we decided not to make last minute change.
We were picked up at San Jose Airport as plan by their designated driver, Dave, an American, no problem communicating whatsoever, and the ride there is just under 2 hours. Upon arrival, our new host Lavonne and her manager, Phillip has prepared our dinner as per our pre-arrangement. I have to say Phillip is a great chef, too :) Cheers!!! The Villa is run by an American expat family now. We are the only visitors for that week, so we have a very quiet stay, and have the whole pool to us :) Breakfast is continental style with generous portion of tropical fruits with some bread & pastry. It's not Ritz-Carlton style, but hey, you are in a rural surf town, the fruits are freshly cut up, and you have all your staples to start your day, that is really good enough and I wouldn't pick on it. Think about hearing the tropical birds that early in the morning, it's a blessing. Villa Adele is located in Playa Hermosa, a surf town near Jaco, 10 mins by cab. It's quiet, the property is about 1.7km to 2km walking to beach. They can arrange a cab to take you there, but we have walked there, about 20mins, you don't even feel it (weather is really good at the time of our visit) Just remember your sunblock. Playa Hermosa has sizable waves if you are a serious surfer ^^ don't underestimate the undercurrents and beware if you are not a good swimmer. We have grilled fish on the strip, Restaurante Hermosa, I ordered take out their smoothie Watermelon/Lemon/Ginger/Mint with a dash of honey as we walked back to the Villa, it was so refreshing as we strolled in sun on the beach.
We cab to Jaco for shopping, book our local tour on a Sunday, the town is busier with many more choices of restaurants/fast food/cafes. This beach area is more commercial. You can buy all your supplies at the local supermarkets (They actually have a smaller size Walmart there) pick up a pizza on your way back to the Villa. People are friendly there, we don't do clubbing, but heard from Dave that there are a few good clubs in the area too.
We spent some considerable relaxing hours at the Villa cooking a simple meal or two during our 4 nights stay, lounging around listening music online (their internet connection is reasonably stable), enjoying a book by the pool. The Villa has studio layout, with separate sitting area with a twin on one side and a queen bed on the other. Chalete ceiling with fans for ventilation, (we don't even need AC at this time of year) I love their natural lighting from the sky windows. The bathroom drain is a bit slow, just remember it's a less advance system than our home city, so use good common sense to curb any bad habit.
It was a pleasant stay & pure relaxation. It doesn't bother me even we didn't rent a car.
I think with their affordable pricing, I don't mind cabbing around when I really feel like going out.
Our host has all our needs well taken care of during our stay.
We have a great time and would definitely go back if we ever visit there again.
I wish Lavonne a good season and a successful business! :)
