“Hidden Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2012

I stayed two nights here as part of a birdwatching tour group. This is an older property, but well kept and very comfortable, a great place to use as a home base for exploration along the central portion of the Pacific Coast. The property borders a pretty stream which was low, but still flowing, during our visit (it was dry season). There are trails emanating from the main hotel area into the forest that would be of great interest to bird watchers. The rooms are set side-by-side in several long buildings, all on the first floor level. My room was very comfortable, with air conditioning and a semi-firm bed (which was just right for me). The open air restaurant was very nice, and there was a bar. There is a swimming pool near the reception/bar/restaurant area. Meals, as in many lodging places in Costa Rica, are buffet style. Cooks were available at breakfast to custom-cook omelets, to go along with the other offerings. At the noon and evening meals, one had at least two entrees to choose from, along with side dishes (don't forget the gallo pinto -- the rice and beans). All the food was tasty. Overall, a really pleasant stay. The hotel is close to Carara National Park and not far from the not-to-be-missed crocodile bridge over Rio Tarcoles.

“Great staff, lovely property, rooms need work”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2012

Positive first. We were there for birding and this property and proximity to Carara was perfect. Scarlet Macaws flying over and perching in the tree tops, Tiger Herons in the tree right in the parking lot, huge iguanas all over the place. Walking the trails by the river produced a lot of different birds and a river otter! Heard Spectacled Owls at night. Pool was refreshing. Staff was very friendly, and the food was good even if the variety wasn't quite there. The downside was the rooms. The air conditioner dripped condensation on the floor. The shower was pretty much inoperable so we were forced to use the ice bucket to rinse off. Found out later another in our group had the same problem with their shower. I'd stay here again but I'd "shop" for a room with a working shower.

Room Tip: Make sure the air conditioner and the shower are in reasonably good working order.

“Not as good as we expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2012

This was place a member of our party chose for birdwatching reasons. The birdwatching was very good. We did get to see scarlet macaws and other interesting birds. However I did not think the food was good enough to justify the prices charged by this hotel; it was average at best. One morning I noticed members of a group tour were eating yogurt and I the staff did not want to allow us to eat yogurt (one person sneaked one over to me finally). The other thing I should mention is that the one mattress in my room had evidence of possible bedbugs (tiny bloodstains on the mattress, a lot of dirt in mattress seams). The pool was quite small, really suitable only for kids to splash in. It was incredibly hot. (I guess I should have figured out this part before I went!!)

“Villa Lapas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2012

We are birders and Villa Lapas is a great location to some good areas. The sky walk in the morning is very productive and the pool in the after noon is refreshing while still birding while soaking.
Food is good but we usually spoil our selfs one night and drive up tp Villa Caleatas for the sunset ceremony and dinner at the Mirador.
Villa Lapas rooms are clean and AC is nice.

“Better than it looks at first glance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2012

On arriving our impressions were of a rather dated and basic resort. We were pleasantly surprised on reaching our room, it was clean, comfortable and in a pleasant location.
The resort caters for large groups as well as individuals. It was nice to find that we could seat ourselves in a quiet area for meals.
The pool area is well-kept, the gardens are abounding with iguanas and the decking area by the river is a very pleasnt place to have a drink.
It is very close to Carara Park and in the evening many scarlet macaws flew over the property. During the day there is a constant chirping from Cicadas but they do go quiet at night allowing a pleasant sleep.
We had actually been booked in for bed & breakfast only but upgraded ourselves to all-inclusive, this covered lunch, afternoon snacks & evening meals as well as drinks (wine, beer & cocktails).
Staff were very helpful & overall we had a very pleasant stay here.
