Lets call a spade a spade. This is an average 3 star hotel. If you're used to staying in 4/5 star hotels this will not seem very nice, well duh ! it doesn't claim to be. If you are however looking for a cheap decent hotel, then this is just the ticket.
I found my room to be perfectly adequate. A decent size and always clean. TV has all the american networks and a few movie channels. Bathroom is ok.
Service is on Tica time. Nothing is done in a hurry, but that is the case everywhere, so just reset your expectations. I would say the food is a little poor, limited choice and if you are on the all inclusive paln you'll get fairly sick of it pretty quickly.
The pool area is fine, decent size and lots of chairs. Though limited shade and the water isn't really cold enough to be considered refreshing. The beach has some of the most amazing sunsets you will see, the sun sets just in front of the headland and is spectacular. There is shade available on the beach but the sand is a dirty brown and the ocean isn't really for swimming.
The town itself is pretty grotty, it's interesting to me that there seems to be lots of new development planned. I'm really not sure why, though I understand this is one off the hotspots for Costa tourism and for other local countries too. (On that point I would guess 70+ percent of the guests at the hotel are Spanish speakers) To continue on with the town, if you don't surf then there is not a lot of reason to stay here. Sure there are lots of attractions close by, but I imagine there are better places to stay in Costa Rica.
In other reviews I've read a lot of nonsense about the town not being safe. I have to disagree with all that. I felt perfectly safe walking around at night. As a gringo ,will you be offered drugs every 20 paces ?, yes, but you can just ignore them, the people never press you. Are there lots of prostitutes in town ?, yes, but again they won't hassle you (and btw the hotel has signs saying it's a family hotel and their presence won't be tolerated, and i saw that enforced a couple of times). Keep your eyes open, use the hotel safe for peace of mind, and keep your wits about you and you'll be fine.
