BEST WESTERN JACO BEACH RESORT
Stayed before in Mexico, Cuba, and Dominican Republic.
I'll start by saying that if you're used to 4/5* resorts in the above, you will be surprised. BW Jaco is an okay place to stay. I'll make sure to say that my trip was really good, but the hotel needs improvements. I stayed all inclusive.
SERVICE: Excellent, friendly, quick, and efficient. The front desk staff is very knowledgable, and it is easy to communicate with them. Staff in the restaurants and bars are also wonderful. Overall, I can't say anything bad about the service.
RESTAURANTS: The food was good. Breakfasts, lunch, and dinner were great. The variety is lacking after about 3/4 days, but the food is edible and in most cases tasty. You will be very sick of chicken and rice by the end of your stay. There is only one restaurant and it is always a buffet, a small snack bar exists by the beach, but it is not very good. I missed the usual variety of restaurants because it gets very boring after a while. There is also no bar in the main buffet, there is wine available, it is good.
BARS: The beach bar is awesome, there is a good variety and service is quick. Try the Guaro Sour. There is a little bar in the lobby with your basic pina coladas and strawberry daiquiris.
GROUNDS: Beautiful, they were very well kept and pretty.
POOL: Not cold enough, small, and the weather in March is +35- +38. Plenty of lounge chairs.
BEACH: Dark brown sand. Not very pleasing to the eye. If you're used to white sand and turquoise water, you will be dissappointed. I knew this before I went, I would imagine most people do. The waves are fun to play in, don't go past thigh deep. Plenty of shade, lots of umbrellas. I saw two prostitutes being sold to old American men. I just wouldn't bring my kids to Jaco, and it's nothing like Punta Cana, for example.
ROOMS: Pretty disgusting. So old, the whole hotel is old, but it shows in the rooms the most. Floors are cracking all over the place, lots of rust, mold under the sink. etc. I was unimpressed, but it is a 3*. TV is all in Spanish, one channel in English sometimes. The resort caters to locals a lot.
ENTERTAINMENT: Non-existent. I really missed the shows at night, nothing was going on after dinner. I went to town once to the Toucan Jam. It is run by two guys from Canada. Did not feel safe in town at night, so I had some early nights. You will get offered crack and other various stuff outside of the seedy bars. Make your own decisions, but I would not recommend Jaco at night.
SAFETY: Never carry lots of money, watch your stuff on the beach, use your safe, don't carry a purse, don't go anywhere with locals, don't use the prostitutes please, you may have the illusion of safety, but you really aren't safe.
TOURS: The highlight for me! Went to Manuel Antonio, Monteverde Rainforest, and Tortuga Island. All excellent, booked through Nolitours. Great guides, very knowledgable. You go to Costa Rica to see stuff, not to lay on the beach, if you are interested in a relaxing holiday don't go to Costa Rica. Tours all leave at 7am. Lots of beautiful stuff to see. Bus rides made me feel sick.
SHOPPING: No shortage in Jaco and on tours. It's expensive and they aren't as open to bardering, like Mexico for example.
CONCLUSION: Would I stay in Jaco again...no. The area just wasn't up to my standards, and neither was the resort. My trip was awesome, but I like luxury, if you're like me, stay in a more upscale area of Costa Rica. Costa Rica is gorgeous, and the people are really friendly, but I don't think I would return to the country, as I have seen what I wanted to see. They are building many high rises on Jaco Beach...unfortunate. If you're already booked at BW Jaco, just relax, you will have a great time, just keep in mind that it is 3* and you will be OK. If you're not booked yet, shop around, though the BW Jaco is cheap. Enjoy Costa Rica, and don't sweat the small stuff. I don't want to give Costa Rica any kind of bad name, because it was an awesome trip!
