“OMG What ar you whining about!?!?!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2009

This place was a wonderland! My wife and i stayed here 4 days for the 2nd leg of our destinaion wedding and I was blown away we were in the last room down the 152 steps. When I die I hope this is the heaven I go to!!!! toucans, bugs monkeys, lemurs, macaws on our patio! I loved the long line of leaf cutter ants ouside our iron door! The views! the food!! We went on four different tours and loved every one. The parks are gorgeous the kayaking indescrbable. All the pampered litle babies who didnt like this place should go to the Hojos in their hometown and save the money. this is an adventure of indescribale proporions! From the moment we turned off the road onto the iguana covered driveway. Get over the construction its there... deal with it! Also about the price if your going to whine about spending money then you shouldnt be allowed to go to this beauty at all. Its going to be expensive. We had all our money in our safe. Nothing happened to it... I think you actually have to shut the door and lock it for it to be called a "safe" lol. Staff you rock! Especially the kid who kept us in ice!!! Tour director you rock! sunset you rock! Go to this place and drink it in! get the last room down the stairs if you can. our 4 day stay cost 1000us a steal for this beauty! Everyone who didnt like this place you dont know what you missed!!!!

We got married in Villa Caletas, just the 2 of us no family or friends and the whole experience was very relaxing, not something many brides can boost. The staff was friendly and helpful the room was very clean, the maid left little swans and hearts with petals on our bed every night! The 2 restaurants food, if a bit lacking in choice after a few days, was superbly cooked well presented and the staff knew what each dish contained and how it was cooked. The wedding coordinator was on hand and looked after all our questions and requests expertly (brideziller did come out when it rained all day the day before the wedding and I thought we could not get married in the amphitheater as planed). The room we stayed in had a fantastic view of the sunset, none of our family and friends believe our photos are not computer generated! It was a little small and had very little hanging space but well laid out. I would recommend this hotel for small weddings and romantic getaways.

Villa Caletas is a truly unique place and we spent a fair amount of time trying to rack our brains to recall having seen anything comparable on any continent. Imagine Emperor Nero returning and deciding to build a resort on top of a spectacular site, 1000 ft above a stony beach (belongs to the Hotel and can be reached by the Hotel Shuttle or by taking your 4 wheel drive !! down a steep winding gravel track). The medley of Colonial, Pseudo-Roman, Neo-Gothic and so far unidentified architectural styles in combination with the individually designed massive suites which sport some of the most tantalizing kitsch we have been privy to is both bizarre and endearing. Our color scheme was a dark green combined with oil canvasses depicting tigers and leopards in their jungle habitat, which are usually foundd on New Yorks 34th St together with Elks admiring the sunset. But please do not get me wrong. The view from the terrace was overwhelming on a world scale (Think Positano, Capri), the amphiteatre purpose built to watch spectacular sunsets over the Nicoya Penisula. every evening a must, the French restaurant combined more astounding views with Escargots and the Chaine des Rotisseurs. If you want to splurge a little, spend day or two at this unique place. You can probably save yourself the extra expense of the suites, particularly in light of the fact that the stairwell seems to have been constructed by an audiophile (i.e any sound is immediately amplified in such manner as to end your siesta). Vila Caletas was definitely the most original highlight of any of our recent trips.

This hotel has one good thing going for it - the view! The grounds are beautiful and the infinity pool is incredible. However, the service is a little slow. Also, if you're not driving a car, the shuttle to the beach can be a bit of a wait.

We visited Villa Caletas one day for lunch as we were driving to Playa Hermosa and after seeing the hotel and amphitheatre, we decided it would be the place for our wedding.

Our wedding was small, just 19 guests and most of us were Europeans. Everything went smoothly and we had the best 2 days ever. The actual wedding ceremony was amazing as it was so intimate, but had that amazing view to the Pacific Ocean. We used hotel's own wedding planner, Yanny, and she was great with all the arrangements. We had six course a'la Carte menu and it was simply delicious.

This hotel has great location, amazing views and extremely friendly and professional staff! I can warmly recommend to anyone just looking for a lovely and elegant holiday resort or to host your weddings or anniversaries.

I’ve lived in Costa Rica for the past 3 years and have travelled extensively throughout the country (and world). I can’t say I’ve stayed at all the top hotels in CR but certainly a good number of them. Without discussing it beforehand, as soon as I proposed to my wife last year, we both knew Villa Caletas would make for the perfect wedding setting. There isn’t another hotel in Costa Rica we would have preferred.

Our wedding was held November 14th at the Zephyr Palace portion of the hotel. This was our 3rd stay at Villa Caletas and it lived up to everything we knew it to be. Choosing to have our wedding in November was a gamble. Villa Caletas is truly a special place due greatly to its location and views, which would have been jeopardized with rain. Luckily, it only sprinkled lightly that morning and we were blessed with a gorgeous evening, but do take the seasons into consideration when planning your stay.

There was about 70 of us in total from all corners of the globe (US, Canada, Switzerland, Holland, Bermuda, Australia, etc) and every single person absolutely raved about the place. Everyone was very impressed.

Contrary to the latest wedding review, we thought the food was outstanding. We chose the VIP Buffet #1 which consisted of salmon, tenderloin, shrimp, calamari, a pasta bar and much more. Most people stayed a week in Costa Rica and said it was one of their best meals. I had a couple plates myself :-)

We did not hire a wedding planner, and therefore due to our own faults we ran into a few issues. However, the response and the help we received from the staff at Villa Caletas, as well as the owner, was unbelievable. Everyone took a strong, genuine interest in helping us out to their fullest. They cared as if it was their own wedding and that meant a lot to us. I can’t stress this enough, but the friendliness, the extra steps they took and their attention to service really made the wedding the huge success it was.

Speaking of extras, the hotel really went out of their way to provide us with many special treats and treatments (at no charge) which was unexpected and most appreciated. If you’re having a wedding here they will treat you right!

One of the highlights of the night was the Latin band we hired; Grupo Fachas. With the help of the hotel we arranged a carnival which was very unique and tons of fun! If you’re having a wedding in Costa Rica, this is a great way to celebrate.

My only “complaint” about our entire experience is with the speed of our email communications. Haslene, the events coordinator, oversees the functions herself at Villa Caletas (which is great because she did an amazing job), but since her office is actually in San Jose, this means that emails back and forth can sometimes take a while (as in several days or more). If you’re ever in a rush to get answers, which can happen as lots goes into planning a wedding, my suggestion is to call her directly.

In the end, all our guests fell in love with the place and many told us it was the best wedding they had ever been to. Several of them are already booking trips back to Villa Caletas and we’ll be heading back ourselves in a few months.

To Haslene, Brenda, Randall, the tremendously warm staff and to the owner Mr. Roy, Ana and I want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for providing us with our dream wedding!

See you again very soon,

Nic

I spent 4 days/nights here with my girlfriend in Feb, 2008. The hotel and the grounds were very nice. The pool is an infinity pool, which I love, and since youre up on a mountain you can see out into the gulf/pacific ocean. This place is famous for the sunset in their little amphitheater and it really was great. The service/staff was very good, the food was pretty good, but very cheap which was nice. When we went to dinner around 8:30 the place was near empty, maybe 1 or 2 other tables of people. It gets very quiet at night, there was no one around even just sitting by a bar having drinks. The place is dead by 7 or 8pm. The only major complaint we had was the bugs. There were bugs everywhere, we eventually had to switch rooms because bugs got inside. Our first room had a balcony/patio facing into the forest which seemed cool during the day, however we would not dare open that sliding door at night. The room they switched us too was alot better but still too many bugs for me, it really was the only issue.
