“Gorgeous view, very secluded”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2012

ROOM: Stayed in Room 16, otherwise known as the "honeymoon suite". Amazing view of Jaco, with a private infinity pool. The bedroom area was small, but you also get a room with an indoor jacuzzi and another middle room (which is pretty much for changing clothes and some lounging). Honeymooners take note: the deck was quite large and um, secluded... Note: the infinity pool is daytime only (i.e. not heated). This room is the furthest you can get from reception, and despite the fact that we're quite active people, it does put you through your paces on a daily basis (no need for a separate trip to the gym). No Wi-fi in room, but hardwire is available if you've brought your laptop. Free Wi-fi available in the lobby and concierge building. Locking safe for your valuables. Lots of birds all around and a friendly (though also noisy) iguana. It IS a rainforest, so there WILL be bugs, and lots of them. It's not a comment on the cleanliness of the room (since this was great in my opinion), it's a fact of staying in a rainforest.

BEACH: We went down to the private beach that is owned by the hotel (free shuttle every hour) and it's quite nice with chairs and cabanas available for free. Taking the shuttle ride down to the beach is a bit nail-biting, as the road is narrow and winding, but I treated it as an additional attraction, like a Jurassic Park ride. There's no walking down to the beach on your own. I mean, you could try, but that would be a day trip on its own...

POOL: There is a very large common infinity pool for guests, and upon seeing this one, it seemed that we didn't really need a private one after all. The views are great and there's plenty of chairs to relax in. Though don't get me wrong: the private infinity pool is definitely great to have if all you want to do is lay around by a pool undisturbed without any other people (or children) around you. Just weigh this against the additional cost involved.

FOOD: Food and drinks are pricey, but no more outrageous than any other resort situation. We ate at the Amphiteater restaurant almost every morning and a few dinners. We tried to eat as much local-themed food as possible. Keep in mind that there are only two restaurants on the property: the Amphiteater and the other, fancy one. That's it.

CONCLUSION: Here's the thing. You need to evaluate what kind of experience you're looking for in Costa Rica. If you want to just lay by the pool and drink fruity drinks in seclusion, and maybe go into Jaco for dinner one or two nights, then Villa Caletas is for you. If you want to do a lot of activities (hiking, kayak, zipline, snorkel, rafting, horseback riding, etc. etc.) and check out Jaco beach and the lively downtown area, then Villa Caletas is too far off the beaten path. The concierge was helpful in arranging transportation to different activities, but each one requires some sort of cab or hired car. Even going into downtown Jaco is about $20 each way. This is a luxury hotel up on the mountain (so you get the aforementioned gorgeous views) and it affords you great beauty and great privacy as well as outstanding service, but if you're more interested in exploring Jaco and doing activities (and willing to sacrifice some of the luxury experience), then you might consider somewhere cheaper and closer to downtown.

Room Tip: Room 16 is the furthest from the lobby. Not recommended for those who aren't in good shape. But...

Dear Friends , thank you very much for your kind review. As you said, it is no "Myth" that we are in the rain forest !! We are so happy of being able to offer such a mix of luxury as private pool, large deck, first class service and still being 1000 feets over the Pacific ocean and taking care of the forest around us. Have a great day , Best regards. manager@villacaletas.com

The small steep amphitheater here is a popular gathering place to have a drink & watch the sunset. The view is magnificent ! Do not be discouraged by the long driveway to get there. The views make it worthwhile. The dining room was OK, but overpriced. Would recommend a drink here & then travel into Jaco for dinner at Lemon Zest restaurant. The hotel is spread over the steep hillside and offers a variety of nicely appointed accomodations. Villa Caletas provides a very different experience. It is not a beach resort as it it high in the hills.

Dear Friends, thank you very much for your review. As you said it worth the 1.7km from the main road that will send you 350 meters / 1200 feets over the Pacific Ocean and Nicoya's Gulf and let you enjoy one of the best view and sunsety in Costa Rica. We might not be a beach resort at that high.., but will still have our own beach 15 mins away from the main reception with our private 4x4 shuttle !! thanks again for your kinds words, Best regards. manager@villacaletas.com

We arrived at night, enjoyed an excellent dinner and then were blown away in the morning by the view, and the list of possible things to do for the day. Attentive and helpful staff gave us the feeling of a high end luxury resort even though we were just passing through. I look forward to spending more than a day there next trip.

Room Tip: There is enough public space and things to do that a (more expensive) room with a view (which you on...

Although we did not actually stay at this hotel, we visited two different times during our week-long trip to Jaco because this property was so incredible. The hotel is perched very high on a mountain/hill, so getting the car up the driveway is quite the adventure, but so worth it. The hotel has an ampitheater where many people gather each day to have drinks and watch the sunset. The views are out of this world - a MUST see if you are in the area. We had a few drinks (which are very overpriced) but well worth it to sit and enjoy such an incredible scene. We also went back a second day for a couples massage, which was pretty reasonably priced given the views you can take in from the massage area. I highly recommend staying at this hotel or at least visiting for some dinner/drinks and a sunset you will never forget :)

My husband and I stayed at Villa Caletas for our honeymoon in November 2011. We had an absolutely wonderful vacation at this hotel. We got the Junior Superior Suite, which was a gorgeous room with a view of the ocean, and a private terrace with a jacuzzi. It was very clean and luxurious. The staff were so nice and accomodating. And the food was fantastic! I had read some negative reviews about the food, but they must have re-vamped their menu because we didn't have a single bad meal. The view of the ocean from the Ampitheater restaurant is gorgeous. Their private beach is nice for lounging; if you want to swim, go into Jaco. We LOVED Villa Caletas and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone!

Room Tip: The Junior Superior Suite was wonderful. Didn't see the standard rooms, but everyone says it is...

After deciding to get married in Costa Rica, my now husband and I were given a referral for the Villa Caletas. From my first call to Yanny (the events director) we knew we made the right decision. The Hotel staff was extremely accomadating. They went out of their way to make sure our guests had the best vacation. Our wedding was amazing. Yanny along with our wedding coordinator Erin made sure every detail was taken care of at the hotel. I will never forget our stay in Costa Rica or the Villa Caletas.

First off, the view is amazing. The view really makes the hotel. All around it is good, but not as nice as it could/should be, particularly for the price they charge

A few complaints - hot water barely worked in the room, room was small, a bit of a trek from Jaco, pool was freezing, hotel generally could be a bit cleaner, overpriced, reception staff has an attitude

Overall, I would recommend the Marriott Los Suenos over Villa Caletas
