ROOM: Stayed in Room 16, otherwise known as the "honeymoon suite". Amazing view of Jaco, with a private infinity pool. The bedroom area was small, but you also get a room with an indoor jacuzzi and another middle room (which is pretty much for changing clothes and some lounging). Honeymooners take note: the deck was quite large and um, secluded... Note: the infinity pool is daytime only (i.e. not heated). This room is the furthest you can get from reception, and despite the fact that we're quite active people, it does put you through your paces on a daily basis (no need for a separate trip to the gym). No Wi-fi in room, but hardwire is available if you've brought your laptop. Free Wi-fi available in the lobby and concierge building. Locking safe for your valuables. Lots of birds all around and a friendly (though also noisy) iguana. It IS a rainforest, so there WILL be bugs, and lots of them. It's not a comment on the cleanliness of the room (since this was great in my opinion), it's a fact of staying in a rainforest.
BEACH: We went down to the private beach that is owned by the hotel (free shuttle every hour) and it's quite nice with chairs and cabanas available for free. Taking the shuttle ride down to the beach is a bit nail-biting, as the road is narrow and winding, but I treated it as an additional attraction, like a Jurassic Park ride. There's no walking down to the beach on your own. I mean, you could try, but that would be a day trip on its own...
POOL: There is a very large common infinity pool for guests, and upon seeing this one, it seemed that we didn't really need a private one after all. The views are great and there's plenty of chairs to relax in. Though don't get me wrong: the private infinity pool is definitely great to have if all you want to do is lay around by a pool undisturbed without any other people (or children) around you. Just weigh this against the additional cost involved.
FOOD: Food and drinks are pricey, but no more outrageous than any other resort situation. We ate at the Amphiteater restaurant almost every morning and a few dinners. We tried to eat as much local-themed food as possible. Keep in mind that there are only two restaurants on the property: the Amphiteater and the other, fancy one. That's it.
CONCLUSION: Here's the thing. You need to evaluate what kind of experience you're looking for in Costa Rica. If you want to just lay by the pool and drink fruity drinks in seclusion, and maybe go into Jaco for dinner one or two nights, then Villa Caletas is for you. If you want to do a lot of activities (hiking, kayak, zipline, snorkel, rafting, horseback riding, etc. etc.) and check out Jaco beach and the lively downtown area, then Villa Caletas is too far off the beaten path. The concierge was helpful in arranging transportation to different activities, but each one requires some sort of cab or hired car. Even going into downtown Jaco is about $20 each way. This is a luxury hotel up on the mountain (so you get the aforementioned gorgeous views) and it affords you great beauty and great privacy as well as outstanding service, but if you're more interested in exploring Jaco and doing activities (and willing to sacrifice some of the luxury experience), then you might consider somewhere cheaper and closer to downtown.
