I stayed at the School of the World for one week at the beginning of a longer stint in Central America. Traveling solo, the most important thing for me is to be safe and meet nice people. Escuela del mundo is just the place for that. I have to say though that it is best for people who want to surf. The other classes are good, but not outstanding, and Jáco is not the most appealing town. Everybody at the school who surfed was extremely happy though. I took Spanish classes which were really helpful to get a feeling for the language even though you can't expect to be fluent after one week, but I really enjoyed them, as we were a small group and the teacher made the lessons fun. My other choice was photography and I was disappointed. I had indicated that I had taken lessons before, but I was put into a beginners group. I didn't really learn anything new or improve my photography skills. What I liked though was the fact that the teacher was an artist and professional photographer and he took us out on field trips to places outside of the main strip of Jáco, so we got to see some of the environment.
The grounds of the school are really nice, very green, nice open spaces. The kitchen/communal area is amazing. The pool area could be bigger, but is niceto chill out in between classes. My shared room was not the nicest, had just a small window that could not be opened and didn't let in much daylight. The room was basic, yet comfortable with a small kitchen countr with a sink and a fridge and an ensuite bathroom. The rooms have AC and fans which is nice. We had a cockroach in our room one night, but I guess that cannot be helped in that climate. The rooms were cleaned every other day and the housekeeping staff is amazingly friendly!
In terms of matching room mates, the school makes sure to put people of roughly the same age together. They did an amazing job with me and my roommate. We became really good friends. Overall, thee was a good mix of people at the school. Average age was late twenties, I'd say.
Overall, I had a great week there, met nice people and brushed up my Spanish skills. I can recommend this place for people traveling alone and on a budget!
