“Friendly, but not what we were expecting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2012 via mobile

This is a nice place with a very helpful staff. We asked for three beds and we got two, but this seemed to be the trend for the rest of Costa Rica on our trip. It is maybe two or three blocks farther from the beach then I would have liked

I live in san jose and wanted to spend one night at the hotel with my family, the same day at night I recceivea call that a member of my family past away and had to live without using the room, I had payed the room already and soposely I was going to get another night NOT FREE but at least with a discount, the administrator (FRENCH GUY) was very rude when I called him back to see if posible to get a diferent night maybe for a different room. Now talking about the place PLEASE look for adifferent hotel, the bathroom are terribles. the towels seems they have them since 1990 WHAT KIND OF SERVICE IS THIS THEY NEVER SHOWD EMPATHY THAS ALL WE ASKED AFTER LOSING A NEPHEW.

La Palmera is located just five hundred meters away from the beach (you are allowed to park your car right on top of the beach). This small hotel is carefully attended by their owners, a courteous French young couple. The rooms, though small, are larger than those in two-star Paris hotels and are equipped with television and air conditioning. The room surrounds a well-maintained small garden as well as a clean swiming pool perfectly comfortable for making laps. The room price includes a sumptuous breakfast. To reach "La Palmera" from San José take the westbound road to Orotina and be ready for a sign to Jacó right after the Orotina toll booth (otherwise you will end up in Caldera, a Pacifique Ocean Port).
Upon reaching the first entrance to Jacó (an hour and a half from leaving San José) continue driving until you see a “Municipalidad” sign at your right. Every now and then the sign disappears, due to car crashes, and you will end up in a desert beach; in that case, turn back and then left at the second entrance to your left. You will find “La Palmera” about one hundred meters from the road, at your left. You will enjoy very good hospitality at low cost.

Room Tip: front rooms for swimers back rooms for sleepers

Several adult family members stayed here in separate rooms for several days. All of us were extremely satisfied.
The hotel is a few blocks from town, which was, to us, a great advantage. Quiet and peaceful.
The rooms are very basic (shelves and closet, no drawers) and VERY clean. A refrigerator is in each room, which was great. The beds are very comfortable. You will need to bring your own amenities (shampoo, moisturizer, conditioner, etc.).
That a good breakfast is included was a bonus: fresh fruit, rice & beans, scrambled eggs, toast, oj, coffee.
The pool area, which includes a covered seating area, got lots of use by all of us. (There are board games in the lobby to use here.) The landscaping is magnificent, and some of us sat outside just to admire the myriad palms and hibiscus.
The service was congenial and, when my sister needed help with the air conditioner, speedy and efficient.
Sure, it could use a fresh coat of paint. That is my only criticism, and for what we paid, I am fine without it. We're coming back!

Room Tip: Room D has a seating area. We took up 5 rooms and everybody was happy.

This was our second time here, and we loved it again! The pool is HUGE for Costa Rica. The rooms were nice and the AC was cool. The free breakfast was great. Front desk was friendly and helpful. Close to town, yet far enough to be quiet. We would definately come back here!

This is a great little hotel. The rooms were very clean with lots of character, the pool area was great and the snack bar had good food. It was a bit noisy at night as it is on a main road. A ten minute walk takes you to the centre of Jaco Beach but the beach can be accessed at many points along the way. We did not feel that safe walking around at night in Jaco Beach so we took taxis back to the hotel after dark. The staff wasn't nearly as helpful as the staff we encountered in the other hotels we stayed at but if you already know what you are going to be doing (we didn't) then I guess it's not a big deal. We tried surfing for the first time...a must do!

Having read the two terrible reviews for Hotel La Palmera here on Tripadvisor (they were posted on two consecutive days so they may have been written by the same person...), I felt like I needed to comment on our experience there:

- The hotel is not in the center of Jaco, but a 15min walk will bring you there (which may even be a plus, see below)
- The room was basic, but absoulutely sufficient (and reasonably clean) and had a TV, AC (plus a suicide shower, if I remember it right... :-) )
- The staff was friendly: Although we were the only guests at the time, they prepared a small breakfast buffet for the two of us and brought us a lamp in the evening when there was a power failure
- Wireless Internet was free to use in the reception area, but not available in our room

However, there is one thing which will not make us come back: The (at least to us) uninteresting town and dirty beach of Jaco itself, but that is of course not under the influence of this quite nice hotel.
