“Great time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

Just returned from 5 days at Morgans Cove Resort and Casino. Staff was outstanding and facility clean and classic Costa Rican style. All inclusive menu and drinks with plenty of selection, pools clean and ocean front inviting. Town safe during the day (didn't leave resort after dark-but didn't really need to)
Activities plentiful and front desk staff very helpful in arranging. Bar's were easily accessible and if you are lucky you can even have a drink with the resort owner!

Room Tip: Rooms closer to ocean side were conveniently located to all amenities

I'll say up front that we stayed because of a Living Social deal (and the reviews seemed mostly positive). The staff had a problem with that, and told me twice that they don't make a dime off of us staying there. I think if you have such an issue with offering discounts you shouldn't participate in the program.

Overall, the place is just not well kept, and most of the staff is apathetic at best. There were a couple of people who really were trying, and we appreciated them. Bottom line, it was bad enough that we checked out halfway through our stay and paid full price to stay somewhere else (which we ALSO loved- Hotel San Bada, in Manuel Antonio).

My husband and I are not picky people, and are perfectly content with a Motel 6 kind of place, IF it's advertised that way. The problem is that Morgan's Cove is that caliber of a place trying to present itself as a beautiful resort.

We came here from Casa Luna Hotel In Fortuna (wonderful place!), so by comparison this was a disappointment immediately. The grounds are not impressive, it just seems run down. The landscaping staff does a nice job with the gardens, there just seemed to be a lot of maintenance that needed to be done. The guy at the front desk was kind of difficult and wasn't forthcoming with information, though he did answer questions we asked. Our room was dirty (again, not super picky, but this was ridiculous); the floor had piles of dirt and food behind the nightstand and under the bed, the bedspread had a big stain on it, there was black mold on the ceiling, and the bathroom was just gross. The bed sheets are thin & are totally itchy, the pillows are lumpy and uncomfortable, and the mattresses are also not comfortable. We decided that we weren't going to spend a ton of time in the room so it wouldn't matter anyway.

Our first night sleeping, I woke up because I heard my necklace being moved in the bathroom. I went in to check, and saw a huge cockroach crawling across our toothbrushes. You can't hold cockroaches in the tropics against them, but I couldn't help but wonder if a cleaner bathroom would help.

In the morning, I asked for cleaning supplies, and it was apparent by the front desk girl's reaction that this was not an unusual request. They brought by a bucket with everything I needed, I was able to get the bathroom clean, and we didn't see any more cockroaches in our room. We also noticed that they didn't clean empty rooms as people checked out- they sat dirty for days after the people left. Yuck. I'm not sure what the cleaning policy is, but the cleaning staff didn't come back again until we asked on the 4th day.

We were surprised to find that the "all inclusive" menu is very restrictive. We were told we could order one snack item at at time, and they would bring more if needed, but that never happened. My husband was able to get more than one beer, but I wasn't able to get a second drink the entire time we were at the restaurant or main bar. However, the bartender at the second (upper) pool was great! He was friendly, lots of fun, and happily gave us drinks when we ordered them.

The all inclusive meals are a price fixe menu, and we were given the option of ordering off the regular menu (at a 50% discount) only on our first night. After that we were not offered the chance to get more food at all, which we definitely would have done. When we did get extra food the first night, they tried to charge us more than double what it should have been (more than the menu price even stated). For all of the shadiness about that, I have to say I think the restaurant staff is nice. I am sure the resort instructs them to slow service down, not offer additional food, etc. They were friendly people, and were very tolerant of how much we liked the stray dogs that come onto the property. The dogs were actually the highlight of staying there.

The food is exactly what you expect all inclusive food to taste like- neither good nor bad. Edible. Some guy who claimed to be part owner of the place sat at the bar smoking cigars or cigarettes every night. It's a non smoking bar, so that was annoying.

There is supposed to be wifi available in the rooms and at the pools. In reality, wifi is available about 25% of the time, at best. This was supposed to be a working vacation for me, so that was the final straw. The front desk was merely annoyed by me checking on the wifi, and the maintenance guy was exasperated by me wanting to use the internet. If you only need to check facebook or something that can wait a day or two it's fine, but if you have an actual job to do you can forget it.

I second the frustration with the nickel and diming. Paying for a safe is fairly common, but put that information out there so people aren't surprised by it. Make the food and drinks that are available obvious by putting out some menus or signs at the bar. It seems silly that you can order all the daquiris you want, but mojitos aren't included, but if people know they'll probably just follow the rules without any problem.

The people at the tour place on site were very nice, and they had great ideas for fun things to do. We ended up leaving so we didn't do any of the tours, but we did a couple of the things they suggested and had fun. The beach was rocky- not the kind of place you want to hang out for a "beach day", though it was cool to watch the surfers.

This is the kind of place that is fine as long as you have low expectations for cleanliness & customer service. I would say that even with the discounted voucher, it was not worth what we paid.

Rooms were clean, great all inclusive package. Food was great, staff was great, owner made himself available and was great at giving advise. Loved the ambiance of the small all inclusive vs the stuffy big mega resorts. Great location on the Pacific side. Will return.

We went to Morgan's Cove on a Living Social voucher. We are a family of five, with 2 grandparents, a young couple and their 3 year old. Management got us adjoining rooms, and even got us the king size bed we requested. It was off season, so the place was not busy. We found the staff very accomodating, pleasant and helpful. Sometimes the waiters didn't bring exactly what we had ordered, (when they were out of something), but they would bring something similar for us to try. The beach was too rocky and the current too strong for swimming, so thank goodness for the 2 adult pools and the 2 kiddie pools. Instead of using the beach we went on several excursions.

Every excursion the staff recommended was run by very professional, prompt people. The minivans to transport us to the excursions were comfortable, safe and air conditioned. We did the guided tour of the jungle one day; the Tortuga Island Catamaran sailing; and the horseback ride to a waterfall. They were all arranged by the staff at Morgan's Cove.

That being said, the rooms were not Marriott Hotel quality, but they were clean. The word "shabby chic" comes to mind. The towels were small, but again, clean. The blue pool towels were replaced as often as needed. There were several pillows on our bed, each with a different density. You are sure to find one that makes you happy. Our air conditioners were a life saver, as we went during the hot, steamy "veranito". The resort grounds were immaculate; someone was always raking leaves, sweeping the parking lot or cleaning the pools.

There is a modern market walking distance from the resort, as well as numerous eateries ranging from where the locals eat, to a Subway sandwich shop, to fancier, more expensive places. Taxis are easy to spot with their bright red color if you overestimate your stamina.

We had the hotel send a car to pick us up at the airport, and it was worth the money. I doubt we would have found our own way with the spotty signage on the roads. Also, gas is sold by the liter in Costa Rica. When we visited gas was just shy of $6 a gallon! Plus there are several tolls on the way there. Our driver waited around for an extra hour - thank God - because no one got the message that we were put on a different flight than the original. It was such a relief to see the huge sign with our name on it when we finally arrived.

We had a great time, at a great price. The Living Social voucher was a terrific find. I would absolutely recommend it. Go with a group if possible, it will multiply your fun!

The guest service was terrible. There were extra charges for every little thing - having a third person stay in the room $30/night, $4/night for lock box usage, there wasn't any type of continental breakfast. Service while getting food or drinks at the bar by the beach was not very good either, basically had to get up leave before they would realize that they needed to check on the table. The front desk worker was a jerk and the front desk closed at like 10:30pm. Only good part about staying at this place was the nice bartender in the casino.

Terrible service and rude people from the beginning! When we first checked in to our room the A.C would not work and the front desk refused to move us into another room, even though it seemed that they had PLENTY of open rooms! Then they would not give us another key and their was 3 in our party. Ended up adding a bunch of taxes and charging us for another guest even though we had already paid for the extra person. Kept finding roaches in the bathroom and then they said it was a whole other charge just to use the Safe. Food was not good and we had to beg for our check every time. Will not be returning here and would not recommend this hotel.

At a $100 per night you would expect some comfort but not the case. Our bed was uncomfortable you could feel the springs and it was just covered with a sheet. I move around a lot at night and in the morning i was laying on the mattress without any covers on the bottom. Who knows whats on the mattress. The phone didn't work. We were told they have been trying to fix it for a few days. The bath towels were very small and thin. Sucks when you are sun burned. The only good thing is the location and the swimming pool. Other than that, not worth the fee. You're better off staying at a hostel.
