Having spent an hour looking around at various hostels and cabinas (all the same price, and all very basic), my girlfriend and I came across Hotel Tropical Rainbow.
They had a brand new pool and comfortable rooms. There was only cold water for showers but when you're paying 12000 colones (~$20) for a double room, you can make an allowance. Although it's quite small, the pool really paid off when we saw how horrible the beach was. In fact our advise would be to stay away from Jaco altogether. However, if you do have to go there, you can do a lot worse than visiting Hotel Tropical Rainbow.
