We had a great time at Cabinas Los Cocos. The cabinas are very close to the beach, you can see and hear the beach from the front deck. The cabinas are rustic - don't expect luxury accommodations. The one we stayed in had a bedroom, small kitchen, a bathroom and a front porch. They were very clean, but there are the typical jungle insects around. The grounds are really nice and the owners are very friendly and helpful. Playa Zancudo is very laid back. There is not much in the way of nightlife. But there are a few really good restaurants within walking distance (or you can borrow bikes from the owners). We bought groceries at the small local store (mostly fresh fruit) and made our own breakfast and smoothies. When we were not on the beach, we were in the hammock on the front deck. We found the whole experience to be very relaxing. I would definitely go back to Los Cocos!

The one complaint I have is that the beach at Playa Zancudo, while quite beautiful, had a lot of trash. We were told that some of it washes up with the surf and some of it was left by the locals during the Christmas holidays. It would be nice if the local community sponsored some beach cleanup days!

My boyfriend and I just returned from a one week stay at Los Cocos in Zancudo and fell in love with the area. We were only supposed to be staying there for 2 nights but loved it so much we extended out stay in costa rica just so we could stay there for a week.It is an ideal spot for laid back adventurous travellers who don't like staying in 'plastic' resort type places. Susan and Andrew (the owners) were very hospitable and made sure that we were having a great vacation. We tried surfing, body boarding on the beautiful beach that at most only ever had 5 or so ppl walking up and down it. We ate delicious meals at Sol y Mar, the local italian restaurant Puerto Negro (comes with very entertaining host and blues artist Alberto) and our very favorite meal of all at the Oceano just down the street (run by incredibly nice Canadian couple Stephanie and Mark).The cabina was simple with a double bed, bathroom and kitchen that inculded a fridge,gas stove and sink. We ate some meals in to save money and made some great fresh fruit smoothies! Zancudo is very isolated but beautiful and peace full. The foreigners that live there are extremely welcoming and definately some of the most interesting characters i have met. One night we even had a bonfire with our fellow Los Cocos neighbours right out on the beach. If you do have the chance to check out this area, do try to get on the tour of the Wildlife Reserve. I learned so much on that excursion and loved the one on one interaction with all the monkeys and animals.

We just returned from an amazing week in Playa Zancudo at the Cabinas Los Cocos. Los Cocos is a friendly, clean, well appointed place. Susan and Andrew were able to accommodate us on short notice when our rental house proved uninhabitable. The cabinas are literally 20 yards off the beach, so you fall asleep listening to the waves. The cabinas are very clean and cute and all have a nice porch with hammocks and chairs for enjoying the breezy evenings. Zancudo itself is a very remote, small town with few restaurants. Although most are within walking distance from Los Cocos, the heat and poor road make travelling to dinner quite an ordeal. As a result, we ate most meals at Sol Y Mar, a resort only 5 minutes walk from Los Cocos. In addition, Susan and Andrew coordinated tours for us at different attractions near Zancudo. We took a boat tour to the Oso Pennisula, and hiked through the jungle seeing 4 species of monkeys, we also visited an animal sanctuary. Overall, it was a great place to stay off the beaten path.

Frommer's lists this hotel as one of best small inns in Costa Rica (2006). We beg to differ, especially at the price. The bungalows have very basic furnishings, easily susceptible to thieves (which the owners did warn us about), hunting camp quality kitchen appliances, and exposed electric connections six inches above the shower. Disfunctional lighting made it very difficult, if not impossible, to read in the evenings. The Cabinas Sol y Mar next door, at half the price, is a much better value. Their staff was more helpful to us than our hosts.
