“A relaxing jungle retreat.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

Laguna Lodge is situated between the sea and some natural and some man-made waterways, through tropical rainforest on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Accommodation is in spacious, bungalow-like rooms with verandahs. The rooms have their own very well equipped bathrooms and are also equipped with safes. The buildings have been designed with great imagination, richly decorated with original mosaics. I was strongly reminded of Gaudi's mosaic decorations in Barcelona as the long seat that greets you as your boat arrives at the landing stage (access to the Lodge is by boat) is resplendent with beautiful mosaics illustrating the wildlife of the area. The dining room overlooks a wide waterway. One morning, at breakfast, a crocodile mooched moodily past and on another occasion, a small pod of dolphins played nearby. The food is plentiful and there is always a good choice of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as cooked dishes to choose from. There are two swimming pools on this site and, if you are lucky, you may well see toucans in the trees that surround them and iguana, too. The site has an extensive botanical garden incorporated into it and you can go for a guided walk of this with very well-informed guides who will tell you all about the properties of the plants growing there. We went on tours of the rainforest waterways and saw a myriad of wildlife@ howler monkeys, spider monkeys, white-throated Capuchins, kingfishers, river turtles, caymans basking on log piles or in the silty rims of the water, fishing cormorants (Aninga Aninga) drying their wings in the sun as they don't have waterproof feathers, Northern Jacanas - I could go on! We also went turtle spotting and had the great joy and excitement of watching a huge turtle deposit her eggs into the sand hole she had dug and the, with slow determination, packing them round with the warm, damp sand.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good.

Access to the hotel is by boat, making this memorable from the outset. The location is great, with a freshwater lagoon on once side the ocean on the other. We went on two boat trips from the hotel to view wildlife in the national park - what an amazing experience. The hotel itself was pretty basic. The swimming pool was good, but the food was repetitive (few veggie options) and the rooms themselves were poor. The main issues with the rooms were: dismal lighting, no storage space so we couldn't unpack, unsupportive mattresses. I'm glad we went to the hotel because of the fantastic location, but I can't help wondering if there was somewhere else nearby with better rooms.

This place is charming .You get there by boat and really hear the wildlife, especially in the moments before dawn..The lodge is very well kept, rooms are very nice yet simple.Food at the lodge is fresh and colorful.Free Wifi at the bar better in the early hours.I enjoyed two days here with Caravan tours,We saw so many creatures I wish it had been longer.Insects were never a problem.Turtles were arriving nightly to lay their eggs. The surf is rough.Raccoons take over at night.Sit on your porch in a nice rocker and enjoy eden at best!

Room Tip: Take everything you really need.It is isolated.in a good way!

What makes it more attractive about Laguna Lodge is that it is located inside the rainforests of Tortuguero, with a pier over the shores of the canals, and if you walk through the paths you can reach the Caribbean beach at the other side of the island.

The employees are very friendly and will always greet you with a smile. The rooms are very cozy and are always kept clean. You can enjoy nature at its finest inside the hotel, which also has a botanical garden, a frog sanctuary, and hundreds of endogenous trees and bushes growing in the green areas.

The food is very good, and you have a nice view from the pier where the restaurant is located to the canals. We even got the chance to see crocodiles, raccoons, and dolphins near the shore!

A nice place to visit with family, friends, or as couples.

You either arrive in Tortuguero by airplane or by boat since there are no roads for vehicles. We arrived by plane and were taken to the Laguna Lodge by boat. Rooms are not air conditioned as we are accustomed to, but they do have ceiling fans and you can get floor fans, too. Nestled between the Caribbean Sea and the Tortuguero River, this is probably the best lodging in the area. Rooms were very nice, food at the restaurant was very good; but be prepared for your wakeup call---it could be one of the air planes landing or taking off right over the rooms!!! The pool is a welcome relief and look for the red-eyed frogs in the bushes and trees right next to the pool. We also saw a tree porcupine close to the pool.

Room Tip: I don't think there would be a bad room location.

My wife and I went to Laguna Lodge with another couple and had a fantastic time. The transport from San Jose was seamless and the boat ride in was an adventure in itself. The property is beautiful, the service was exceptional and the food was much better than we had anticipated. The real advantage that tis lodge has over all others but one is that you are able to walk to the beach or the town without having to arrange boat transportation. The second advantage is the pools (yes there are two - one more for kids and one more for adults) where you can cool off from the jungle heat. The first day there was a boat trip to explore the town ad we had a choice of riding back or walking. We chose to walk to give us more time in town, including some food and drink at the Buddha Café which is fantastic. Three quarters of the way back the sky opened up and we were caught in a downpour but we had a blast as the rain was warm and refreshing. Service.... I had an allergic reaction to god knows what and broke out in itchy hives. Within minutes of approaching reception we were on a boat heading to the excellent clinic in town, absolutely free of charge. I got a shot in the but and some antihistamines and was fine shortly there after. The included guided tour of the canals and wildlife was just wonderful. Overall a fantastic experience.

Room Tip: If you are a couple ask to be near the smaller more adult pool

After about an hour of travel by boat, I arrived at this lovely lodge. The boat ride was beautiful. The lodge is located between the Caribbean sea and a lagoon. Walking, you can see both in about 3 minutes!

The buffet dinners are good, the rooms are nice and the grounds are lovely! You can arrange tours to see the sea turtles nesting at the front desk. There are boat tours of the canals available, as well as boat trips to the nearby town of Tortuguero.
