“The view..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2013

It's a good place to stay. Especially the view from the little dock. You can see the river and the boats.. lovely! The rooms where fine, with a fan and a proper bed. What I really liked about this place, was that it was really clean; every day nicely folded towels and toilet paper. Ain't that cute?

Fabulous location with a lovely dock to chill out overlooking the water. Breakfast served on the dock which is included was amazing, pancakes one day, scrambled eggs another day plus a big plate of fruit.
Bargain boat trip on electric boat booked through here highly recommended. Clean rooms if a little hot at night

We stayed here just one night, November 26th, it was a great little introduction to Tortuguero, our boat pulled right up to their dock where you check in. You could walk to the beach, through the town or sit on their patio that overlooked the action on the canal. The room was comfortable with far more beds than we needed, we booked at the last minute and got what was remaining, but no problem, I particularly liked the twin fan action, one on the ceiling, the other was a floor model, far better than A/C, and there would be no way a mosquito could get at you, not that we saw any in the room, but they were in the jungle. We arrived after the turtle nesting season but some guests were telling us now is the time to see the little guys hatch and scramble for their lives to the sea, but it isn't as easy as you think to find this. Look for groups of people standing around on the long stretches of beach and they will probably have found a nest hatching. I was in Tortuguero about fifteen years ago when there was like one little general store open only certain hours of the day, today there are several restaurants overlooking the canal, about a dozen little mom and pop bed and breakfasts, a supermarket, several art and souvenir stores and boat loads of mostly senior tourists, from the larger Tortuguero hotels out on the canals, wandering up and down the paths (there are no cars) especially in the afternoon. The place seems quite safe, probably because everybody knows everybody so thieves would have a hard time getting away with anything. You could pay a lot more and probably do better but so what, or the price for what you get, nice breakfast served on the patio, it would be hard to do better. Casa Marbella is a member of my non-profit eco-hotel association, and after eight years we finally got a chance to visit it, happy we did.

This place is definitely overrated and it is only worth to stay there if you have a room upstairs on the second floor to the riverside (room no. 7). Otherwise, the rooms at the groudfloor are small, very dark and sticky. The staff is not helpful, they are unconcerned. We moved out after one night and went to Miss Junie - a much better option.

Stayed two nights after a traumatic experience in Manzanillo, we were going to go home then Daryl persuaded us to come and stay. First floor room overlooking the river is very pleasant, although it is true you get noise from the river.
The most memorable part of the trip was what I can best describe as an "extreme nature trail" with Ross Ballard, who gave us a five-hour walk and talk through the jungle with some amazing anecdotes, for a very reasonable price. Better than going into the Park!
We went in low season and I would recommend staying in the town at that time, since the complaints about night noise are not so relevant and the other riverside lodeges appeared to be rather empty at that time.
Overall, would heartily recommend Casa Marbella and Ross Ballard to anyone.

You should know there is no AC at this hotel, which is what you will find in Tortuguero.

Our room was nice, and though we did a good job of messing it up, the staff kept it very clean. We could have used a more powerful fan. The dock is a nice place to spend time. We played cards out there and enjoyed view.

Daryl was very helpful, but a little preoccupied with the construction of an addition. The turtle nesting tour was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The park tour was impressive too. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, he talked to a bird, (and it talked back) and pointed out wildlife to other tour boats. The tour was competitively priced and we met right on the dock.

We spent 4 nights in Tortuguero at Casa Marbella and were thrilled with it. The rooms were well designed and spotlessly clean, and the staff were all extremely helpful. We loved being right in town where we could take boat tours, take out the hotel's canoe (for free!) on the canal, walk to all the restaurants or be at the beach in a couple of minutes. It was a very authentic experience with school kids walking by, fisherman to watch, and lots of locals living so near. We especially loved the decks of Casa Marbella (one covered which was great in the rain), where we spent our down time between hikes and tours watching wildlife and talking with guides, guests, and staff. This hotel is just the right place for our family--we've graduated from backpacker hostels and sleeping in bus stations, but big resorts and all-inclusive packages don't suit us at all. We met people from Spain, Great Britain, Canada, the US, The Netherlands, and Belgium and all were happy with Casa Marbells, which made it a very happy place to be. This hotel is that sweet spot in the middle--clean, safe, comfortable with a delicious breakfast and rooms cleaned daily, but still part of the real Costa Rica. I'm giving this hotel a 5 because it's great value for the money and a wonderful place to be. I hope nobody confuses that for a 5-star hotel, which this, thankfully, is not. It's just a great place for couples, singles, or families to spend time to really get to experience the wonder of Tortuguero.
