“Do it - certainly worthwhile”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013 via mobile

Thoroughly enjoyed the stay here. Starting with a canoe trip to make it from the drop off to the lodge you get to see the wetlands straight away. The rooms are huts set in the jungle and you can hear the crabs in the mud around the room, monkeys in the trees and on the rooftop, sloths and plenty of birds. Also enjoy a cocktail on the deck over the river. Three days was just enough.

This Hotel/Lodge is so cool to the eye, for the three days and three nights that my family and I stayed there it was perty good. There is deffinetly not much to do at the lodge itself, but there are tons of tour to do. That was part of the down side to my stay. When we were there it was really really rainy and hot, so we did not want to do much tours, but there was nothing around the resort and they would not let you go back into town to shop either. Also no WiFi in rooms, bad when its really rainy out. One cool thing though they have a huge piece of space ship junk that washed up on shore.

LOVED my stay at the turtle beach lodge. we booked a 3 day 2 night stay through Gadventures (though it probably would have been easier to book directly!)

our guide, daniel, picked us up from our hotel in san jose, along with a few other groups along the way. We drove over to the port, stopping for breakfast and a butterfly garden along the way. then we were picked up in a boat by John to head to tortuguero. Once in Tortugeuro, we stopped by town for a quick tour and to pick up souvenirs. Then, John drove us (by boat) out to turtle beach lodge. FYI it is a good 30 minutes by boat from town, so its not very accessible. that said, you dont need anything else!

my friends and i called it "glamping" - glam camping. our room was nice, the windows are mosquito-netting (important, as its in the jungle). and yes, there are bugs - not many in the room though a tiny crab somehow climbed its way into our bathroom at some point! nice big space though, decent beds, decent sized bathroom, all cleaned daily. towels arranged into animals :)

there is a bar, and the buffet food served at breakfast lunch and dinner was actually quite delicious. there is coffee out 24/7. the chef made my friend a cake for her birthday because she turned 27 while there, and it was really tasty too. there is a pool which was really nice, and a row of hammocks which we enjoyed for an afternoon. beach is nice for walking (no swimming because of rip tides).

daniel took us on a tour of the jungle, a botanical tour of the gardens, and then also a boat tour in the early morning to spot animals waking up. we also paid extra to go kayaking one afternoon (highly recommended - it was so lovely and the water is so tranquil), and then for a night turtle tour run by the national park. john brought us to town for it, and we got to see sea turtles laying their eggs. incredible.

the boat rides were just so incredibly beautiful. i normally get motion sick but had no problems because the waters were so calm. i highly recommend spending a few days here! FYI: no wifi, but there is a computer you can use in the reception lobby.

Room Tip: We were in 108, and it was nice. i think you'll hear howler monkeys regardless of which room you...

The lodge took us (and a group of other visitors) directly in our hotel in San Jose and took good care of us during the next 3 days. The guide (Albar) was overall very good and provided a lot of info during all the visits and even in the bus (still check when he tells you that he called your car rental and the car is coming: not exactly true...). The location of the lodge is just incredible (in the middle of the jungle and until you are a few hundred meters from it on the boat you just can not guess such a place is there) eventhough a bit out of the park (in fact you never know when you are in the park and where you are not). Still the nature around is terrific and you MUST take a kayak on your own and go around on the chanels: Alone, no motor sound, on small chanels, with nature so close and so huge... a unique experience for us and our 2 kids.
The rooms are good, the food is ok, and the park of the lodge is by itself very nice to walk around and look at (check the monkeys in the trees). Only "bad" points: The beach is not good, you must be very lucky to see sthg interesting at the turtle night expedition (late, night, rainy, not great for the small kids) and be aware that you'll get lot of rain (but this is valid for the whole Tortuguero area).

My wife, 5 yr old daughter and I stayed at Turtle Beach for 3 nights mid-way through our two-week trip around Costa Rica. The lodge was very flexible in helping us arrange a connection at Guaplies with the hotel transport from San Jose out to the Lodge, as we were traveling via private transport from La Fortuna. It was quite the experience to drive out to the boat launch point and then take that great boat-ride in!

As other reviewers have mentioned, don't come to Tortuguero or Turtle Beach looking for luxury. The Lodge is very nice--great grounds, lots of monkeys, easy beach access (though we never swam), a nice pool (which we used a lot!), and great, screened in rooms.

But, the food is simple (though tasty), and the rooms too are simple, but are clean, with hot water, and wonderfully comfortable beds! We were in an end room, which was much nicer as it had a wall of screens on the front wall as well as on the side wall for better airflow. Being in such an open room also made the sounds of the howler monkeys in the trees around us and the noise of the rain (we had a 16 hour storm) feel as if they were right in the room with us--it was an experience we really loved!

For things to do, the included guided activities are nice, and I would definitely recommend taking out one of the available (free!) kayaks or canoes for a paddle on the canals. You can go with or without your guide. Hands down, one of my favorite experiences in all Costa Rica! Definitely--ABSOLUTELY--do the guided nighttime Turtle Hike at the Park. Well run, and a truly amazing experience, especially if you have kids (they find it pretty magical:)!)

The things I'd ask the hotel to work on are: one, providing safes in the rooms. Seems odd that there weren't any. two, fix the hammocks. The ones they have look nice, but are SOOOOO stretched out you hit your butt on the ground. And, they are the twisted yarn kind, so hold water for days after it rains. As they are today, they are unusable.

Room Tip: If you can, try to get an "end" room so that you have better airflow.

Turtle Beach Lodge was our first stop. It was an amazing boat ride in. So beautiful. We had 8 people and were ther for 3 days. We had great activities, good food and a great group of people to hang out with. Love the wildlife, banyon trees, jungle walks and rain. Man can it rain there. But it was fantastic.

My sister, and I loved our experience at Turtle Beach Lodge! I was a little hesitant booking when I read about the screen only windows. I was concerned we might have bugs in our room. No need to worry; we saw 1 ant the entire time.

Our guide (Marvin) picked us up at our hotel in San Jose, and was with us the entire three days. It was great having him around, and he was an encyclopedia of knowledge. He also led our early morning canal ride, and the afternoon nature walk. He was with us at all of the meals, and wandering around the grounds to help identify any of the many cool plants and animals we saw. He also was down on the dock to make sure we were all on the boat for our turtle nesting tour. I was really pleased at the organization of this lodge. Everything from the pick up to the departure was right on time.

My only complaints were that the pool area was under construction while we were there. The pool was open, but the noise didn't make for an overly relaxing afternoon. I also thought the buffet meals were just okay. Both of these items were minor when compared with the overall experience. I would definitely recommend Turtle Beach for those visiting Tortuguero.

Room Tip: We had an end room in the 100 building. We had a great afternoon when numerous spider monkeys picke...
