“Great location for Tortuguero National Park”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

If you are expecting 5 star hotel, this place is not for you. BUT if you are looking to stay somewhere as close as you can to Mother Nature and enjoy the minimum of civilized word- you will love this lodge.
We traveled with tour, so I didn't book it myself, but LOVED these 2 nights stay in this inside of nature place.
Even to get to this lodge became to be an adventure- you can get there on boats only- how cool it is- we saw a crocodile as soon as we left dock. And it is just so amazing to have no speed boat, and relax and enjoy time traveling to resort.
Rooms were some outdated- very simple, but clean and had all necessary stuff. Two pools, hammock, couple of bars, restaurant- isn't it what you need to feel comfortable? But setting of every cottage in rainforest with blooming flowers, all kinds of creatures ( yes, included howler monkeys, iguanas, and other "local" creatures) and no TV, internet connection, and such- was absolutely what you want to see, hear and feel when you are inside of National Park. It was interesting to read reviews of people who've got upset about it :-) Isn't it what you are coming to Costa Rica for?
Food was plain and simple ( like in most of the hotels we stayed at) but plenty and a lot of fresh fruit as always.
And place even have a little trail right on grounds- how about it. And yes, because it rains a lot- they even offered us any sizes of rubber boots. But you do need to be careful- it is wilderness and you can see on train anything from monkey, snake, or butterfly.
And for sure take some of local guides for boat tours around. We were so lucky and learned so much from Eddie- priceless information.
I loved it and would recommend anybody who wants to experience unusual stay.

I stayed at Pachira for 3 days and have to say I was not too impressed. The room I had was pretty big, which would have been nice if I was traveling with someone else, but was not that nice. There were 2 beds, both of which had broken springs poking out through the mattress and sheet. The bathroom was pretty small and tight and was pretty slippery during/after taking a shower. The grounds were pretty but nothing special, I thought. The staff was mostly friendly though there is one girl who works the desk who was quite rude and unwilling to help customers (I got the same comments from other guests). The meals were pretty good, served buffet style, with some delicious juices (LOVED the raspberry juice!) The pool and band were the 2 redeeming factors for me. The pool was wonderful, especially given that it was about a million degrees and 100% humidity, I did not want to get out. 1 night they also had a band play at the bar and that was quite fun, everyone had a great time listening to the music and dancing the night away.

Beautiful rustic hotel in the middle of the jungle. Lovely gardens, rustic accommodations with buffet food. Limited menu. Embarcation and disembarcation from the mainland is rough going. A lot of mud when it rains which is most of the time. The town of Tortuguero is worth seeing but don't expect luxury. The best thing about the trip and for all of Costa Rica is the people.

Room Tip: Go for one night stay from San Jose.

We felt as though we had stepped back in time staying at this great lodge. The rooms are very bare, with no air conditioning, tv or telephones. The windows only have screens, no glass. We didn't need an alarm clock, because the holler monkeys took care of this. We really didn't know what to expect when we took this trip, but we found the surroundings for 2 nights delightful. The restaurant and food were wonderful with no complaints. They have a pool and bar that is as nice as many hotels that we have stayed at when we are traveling. We really enjoyed all of the beautiful tropical plants and flowers that you are surrounded by when you stay in this location. The rooms were nothing fancy, but were very clean.

Spent 2 nights here. The rooms/cabins are quite basic but clean. Unfortunately ours didn't have a room safe but others did. There's no glass in the windows only mosquito mesh so you can enjoy the jungle type sounds - howler monkeys, birds, all the time. There's coffee, tea and water available outside the restaurant most of the day. The restaurant is fine but the meals could become a bit samey. It's the location that's the best thing about this hotel. It's by the water in lovely tropical grounds with no roads to it. The boat trips are excellent and so are the guides.

a large wood panelled room, had a warm feel , no tv or coffee machine , which was fine by me.Well organised buffet style meals , food quality was reasonable, but the times available for meals were a bit limited and staff tended to clear the buffet away too quickly, so if you were a bit late choice was restricted or non existent. The grounds were lovely and just sitting in them or walking around within the lodge grounds would produce interesting sightings of wildlife.

Between the boat rides to and from the lodge and the various canal safaris, you spend a lot of time on the water here, and that is part of the charm of this place. You really do feel as though you have escaped from the world, especially out on the water looking for wildlife, and yet all the essential comforts are provided for. It is a good place to rediscover the virtues of the simple life. Rooms are spacious and clean, with towels folded in the shape of kissing swans to greet you. The ceiling fan is sufficient for keeping you comfortable, and at night it gets cool enough to turn it off. It's a treat to sleep with the sounds of the rainforest and the very distant Caribbean in the background. Cicadas whirr through the night, and howler monkeys will wake you up around 5:30. In our forays back and forth on boats and around the beautifully planted property, we saw tiger herons, green ibises, anhinga chicks, a sungrebe, a hummingbird nest, northern jacanas, an owl butterfly, a pit viper, and many monkeys, as well as numerous North American migrant herons. Butterfies and hummingbirds were plentiful. The pool is lovely. We were surprised by how few bugs there were, but there had been very little rain at the time we were here (even in the rainforest!) so perhaps it is not always so bug-free. If you are not a birder, you might not want to make the effort to come all the way out here when the sea turtles are not laying their eggs, but I would have been happy to stay here much longer.
