We just got back from 2 weeks in CR and found our stay at Tortuga Lodge in Tortuguero to be our favorite. The setting is incredible - no roads, just get there by bus/boat or plane. Our room was spacious enough for our fam of 4 ( 2adults/2 kids) with 2 D beds and 1 twin. It had a hammock and 2 chairs outside the door looking over the garden and river. Pathways run through the property to the dining room and pool. The meals were very good and group seating was fun as we always could converse with other guests to hear abt their activities of the day. We did the night tour to see the greenback turtles nesting. It was fun and exciting after the short boat ride to walk through town to the trail through the jungle to the beach all by flashlight to see the huge turtles make their way up the beach from the waves, over to patches of brush where they struggled and dug until a suitable nest was dug and then to watch them actually laying eggs - incredible nature right before our eyes and only a few feet away!! Our very nice guide, Robbberto took us out on our boat tour the next day was so great. We putted our way through the canals and could see lots of incredible birds, camens and monkeys playing and jumping over our heads through the trees - such fun! Coming back from our tour in time for lunch an a refreshing swim was the perfect end to the day where we spotted lots of large iguanas . The pool is a beautiful design - not too big, but designed to blend in to the look of the area, rock colored bottom and sides and it looks like it blends into the water of the river which is just over a bank right next to it. L:ots of big comfortable chaises around the pool and some hammocks too. Wespent 2 nights there and loved every minute. Booked it through Presilla at Costa Rica Expeditions who was extremely helpful too.

My husband and I stayed at the Tortuga Lodge in May for 3 days/nights. It is in the top 5 lodgings I've stayed in over my entire life! The grounds and rooms were beautiful. (We were upgraded to the best suite. We still don't know why.) The staff was extremely personable and professional. They did everything they could to make our stay the best it could be. We were off season and there were at most 15 people staying there. (We were told they only allow 40-50 people stay in high season.) The lodge is part of Costa Rica Expeditions touring company which accommodating our every need seemed part of their everyday service. Our tours were private (at most 5) and our guides were top notch. We saw tours from other lodges with 20-30 people. The food was incredible! I had heard Costa Rica had very bland food and was boring. Not here! If you do go in May, you miss the turtles on the beach but we saw 3 different kinds in the ocean on our fishing trip. My husband and I rarely visit a place more than once, (too much of the world to see!) but I definitely want to go back here! I hated to leave and felt like the staff was family. Don't miss this area of Costa Rica or Tortuga Lodge.

Pura Vida! That says it all for this lodge and destination. Its everything you would expect and more. We stayed for three nights, and we were sad when we have to leave. The lodge offers very simple rooms that are large and comfortable. You spend most of your waking hours either exploring the canals or enjoying the area around the lodge. The lodge offers wonderful meals, and brings back memories of camp since it's family style and they ring a bell when its meal time. Meals were a great time to socialize with the other guests, and relax.

I took my 4 yo daughter, and she loved it. She loved seeing the birds and animals, and socializing with the other kids.

We took the tourist bus and boat to the lodge, and the plane back to SJ. You should plan to spend at least two nights here since the travel time to the lodge is 4 hours by bus and boat. It also is quite wet and humid.

There is a weight limit of 25 lbs per person so plan accordingly. You dont need much, but the must have items are
-- tevas (you dont need boots)
-- bug repellant
-- rain jacket
-- sun screen
-- binoculars
-- hat
-- 1 change of clothes
