This was the first stop on our honeymoon and we had an absolutely wonderful time. As a note, the Tortuguero airport is currently closed for repair and you have to get there via Barra del Colorado if you decide to fly there. It was about an half hour boat road which was actually enjoyable. Anyway, once we got there in the morning, the staff was there to greet us to take our bags to the room and sat us down for breakfast. We were one of only 4 couples there (not sure how this place wasn't nearly packed!) and had the attention of the staff at all times. The food here was the best we had during the entire trip (including a more than a full day in San Jose and 4 nights at the Paradisus Playa Conchal)!!! Breakfast was typically fresh fruit, gallo pinto, and eggs; lunch was a different type of salad with a lighter fare; and the dinners were absolutely top notch. The best was sea bass with garlic and oil with vegetables and other sides. I expected the food to be ok here, but it was better than any upscale restaurant we ate at in Costa Rica!
The rooms were very nice...this is a lodge so you shouldn't be expecting upscale accomidations, but they were better than sufficient. Everything was clean, and the showers were large. There is no A/C, but the ceiling fan and open windows kept in comfortable. This did allow the howler monkeys to wake you up about 5:30 every morning though. The only thing close to a complaint is that the bed in our room wasn't the most comfortable, but others said that they didn't have any issues with theirs.
There was a small bar and pool which were both nice for lounging around between adventures. The lounge chairs around the pool were also very comfortable. But on to the real reason for coming here...the tours! The first night we did the viewing of the sea turtles with our guide Geraldo. We first saw one relatively quickly heading back out to sea. After waiting for awhile with our two-hour time limit nearly up, we got the call that there was a sea turtle laying eggs up the beach. It was quite an experience watching this massive creature laying eggs and the wait to see it was definitely worth it. Geraldo was extremely knowledgable and helped passed the time while waiting for the scouts to find a sea turtle.
The next day we did the guided boat tour in Tourtguero national park...the guide's name escapes me but he was excellent; he spotted animals long before we could see them and knew exactly what everything was. We saw 3 species of monkeys, caimans, and many types of birds. It was also very fun cruising the rivers and streams as the jungle completely surrounded you. Afterwards, we stopped by Tortuguero for a few hours to check out the town. There wasn't too much to see but it was interesting to see how people live in a town with no vehicles! One must to is to eat a meal at Miss Junie's in town...it was even better than the food at the lodge and by far the best meal we had during our trip!
Overall, this is a great place to spend 2-3 days during a trip to Costa Rica, but I couldn't imagine being here longer unless you were going there to some fishing for a few days as well. The value of the lodge, meals and tours were excellent; we highly recommend this place and would come back here the next time we come back to Costa Rica
