“Wonderful experience - great hotel with excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2011

This is a wonderful place to stay. It’s a 5/10 minute boat ride out of the village of Tortuguero. The hotel provides transport on river buses. If you’re in Tortuguero, river taxis take you there for $20 for the four of us. It’s therefore very peaceful, but you may feel you miss out on the bustle of Tortuguero. We liked the tranquillity! Food was very nicely done. They were accommodating – we missed breakfast because of an early morning canoe trip but they rustled up fruit, toast, and coffee for us.

We liked the way the Turtle Spotter program is organised – book it through the hotel. It was a highlight of the holiday.

We recommend doing a canoe tour of the canals with Barbara Hartung as a guide . Pre-book her

Get up very early (5:15), get the hotel water taxi to Tortuguero village and she will meet you. Go canoeing with her. Far better than the noisy outboard engines of the other boats, and you can go down narrower rivers than the other boats. The canoeing is easy. She has good English.

We recommend the hotel’s Word Adventure Programme. It’s free and is run by the wonderful Kerry who is an American girl living in the area. English is essential for the local children if they want jobs in tourism. Kerry is employed by the hotel to run an English language club in the local village of San Francisco. You can help her for an hour or so with the language club –it’s doesn’t require teaching skills. We played Uno with the children –they practised their English and we learnt some Spanish and it was great fun.

Dear PixelDad,

Thank you for your review.

I am delighted to see that you enjoyed the Word Adventure so much. Kerri is doing a wonderful job. We started the Word Adventure program in July of 2010. At that time we had seven students. Today, a little over a year later, we have 22 students from 9-19 years of age.

It has been tremendously successful, the kids are learning English and guests are having fun and taking home memories such as your.

Please come and see us again some time soon.

Sincerely,

Natalie Ewing

Well worth the journey to get to it however you do it.....we arrived by private charter plane which was spectacular & the welcome was as warm as ever ! Out of all the restaurants & 4 star hotels we stayed in, this place has by far the best food in Costa Rica & you don't even have to choose from a menu ! You really feel at one with nature in thei beautiful property & the staff can't do enough to ensure you enjoy your stay.Be prepared for bugs but nothing too overwhelming & being withour a/c for a few nights is all part of the " jungle experience" but it's still a "quality " eco-lodge for the adventurous traveller ! Would definitely recommend it & plan to go back..awesome for couples or families..even with teenagers ! All the nature tours they offer are superb with incredibly knowledgable local guides. Special thanks to Harry at the restaurant for always being so acommodating !

Dear KathleenB,

I'm thrilled that you found our food to be the "Best in Costa Rica"!

I'll be sure to tell Alfonso, our Head Cook. Alfonso is a special man, originally from Nicaragua. When he first came to work for us he was a gardener. He then worked his way into maintenance and finally in his quiet and shy way asked if he could work as an assistant in the kitchen.

He is now in charge of the kitchen and delights guests with his creations on a daily basis.

Thank you so much for this review, he will be thrilled. I can't wait to see his reaction!

All the best,

We stayed two nights with our two young children. The whole family loved it! The level of service and attentiveness by the staff is nothing short of outstanding. The food is delicious and varied. The grounds, rooms and restaurant are all lovely. The kids especially loved the pool, which is elegantly designed to fit into the natural setting. We had wonderful wildlife sightings right on the hotel grounds...a whole troupe of howler monkeys right next to our room, a three toed sloth mother and baby, green iguanas...among others. The kayak tour was definitely a highlight, with our knowledgeable guide Luis. We are so grateful to manager Julian and all the wonderful people at Tortuga Lodge for taking such great care of us and giving us such an amazing experience.

Dear TanaH,

I'm delighted to hear that your family enjoyed Tortuga Lodge and had an "amazing experience".

I think Tortuguero is one of the easiest places in Costa Rica for kids to see wildlife. Families visit the park either by motorized boat (maximum 12 guests) or in either double or single kayaks. We plan our visits in the park when other companies will have already left so that we have as much privacy as possible and our local guides are the best in the region. When you combine those factors you get a very high success rate on wildlife sightings.

The other thing that makes Tortuguero and Costa Rica in general so special for families, is that Costa Ricans give a very special place to children within their own families. All the more reason to give extra special attention to the children of our guests.

I hope that you will come back and visit us again soon.

All the best,

Natalie Ewing

I spent only 2 days there, but the experience was great. The staff was friendly and helpful, the room was wonderful, the food great, and the location can't be beat!

The service was amazing. Everyone was not only friendly and attentive, they really seemed to take pride in all they did. The service was so welcoming and it is a great touch that they offered a guide in the early morning to help you spot wildlife on the property. Everything was first rate.
The room was super. It had no windows, only mosquito netting so it is great to hear the monkeys and wildlife all night long.
The food was the best. It was either a blessing or curse to arrive in Costa Rica at this hotel because the innovative delicious and plentiful food set the standard for our whole trip. Never again would there be a lunch or dinner without a delicious dessert!

We traveled to Tortuguero from Puerto Viejo for the second stop on our honeymoon. We were extremely satisfied our stay. We drove ourselves to Cano Blanco and were taken by boat to the Lodge. We were welcomed when we arrived and immediately served a lovely lunch with specialty passion fruit drink. We were very happy with the room. The hotel staff helped us book our turtle viewing tour, along with a kayaking tour both of which were great. The grounds are very pretty and home to wildlife such as howler monkeys, toucans, iguanas, frogs, and lizards. We got to see crocodiles, two types of monkeys, caymans, beautiful birds and other wildlife on our kayak tour. The service really is exquisite and they go out of their way to accommodate any requests. We were transported back to Cano Blanco by boat. We truly do not have a negative thing to say about this hotel and experience!

Dear floopynefe,

First of all congratulations on your wedding. I can't think of a better place to celebrate than Costa Rica. I am delighted to hear that your stay at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens was "exquisite".

I'm glad that you especially enjoyed your kayak trip into the Tortuguero National Park. Kayaking in Tortuguero is truly a special experience, viewing the rain forest from a sit on top kayak offers a seldom seen perspective. The kayaks are so quiet that you are able to glide down the creek and are often not noticed by the creatures on the river bank and in the trees that are going about their day. What I really like about the kayaks is that anyone can learn how to paddle and it's fun!

Please come and see us again some time soon.

Sincerely,

Natalie Ewing

Accessible only by boat & plane, Tortuga Lodge sits on the river near the Tortuguero National Park. The park is a combination of The Amazon and Venice Italy with its series of canals surrounded by a wildlife-rich jungle. We came in by boat from Limon City and departed by small plane (across the river from the lodge) back to San Jose. Because of its remoteness, we weren't sure what to expect but Tortuga Lodge wildly surpassed all of our expectations! PROS: quiet serene natural setting, exceptional service, infinity natural swimming pool, great quality of food, eco-friendly design was luxurious yet blending in with its surrounding, the boat ride to get there, the small plane flight coming back, and the National Park boat tour. CONS: can get warm since there is no air conditioning.

Room Tip: We stayed in the 2 bedroom 2 bath Penthouse suite, amazing accommodation for 4 adults.
