“What a spot!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2011

This is a perfect place to stay in Tortuguero! The staff are always ready, arrange tours or taxi boat for you. Nothing is too much. The rooms are spacious, well maintained and clean. Because the hostel is located at the end of the village (500 meters), it is very quiet. It has a beautiful garden where you can relax with a very nice view on the river and the forest. The ocean is on the other side (1 minute walk) which you can hear quite good, great sound! Breakfast is simple for this beautiful hostel and should be expanded. Dinner is excellent.
The enthusiastic owner gives great tips of surroundings and offers tours like turtles trip at night. But he also let you taste coconuts from their own garden!

No effort was too much, Nollie, miss Junie's daughter was ever-present and always tried to please us. And not only was she very hospitable, she was a great cook ! It took some time before the dinner reached the table, but relaxing was the adagium, and it always tasted delicious.
It was a beautiful place to stay, worth carrying all the luggage for, and the trips in the surroundings made you wanna stay much longer.
Mind you: you can only get money there at the general store at quite some costs, so bring enough, I cannot imagine anyone stealing it !

We had an amazing time. Take the canoeing with Carla, she is a great guide, you go in very small groups and we saw the coolest animals from very closeup from your boat and really got some feeling with the forest.

The place is runned by the first family to built presence on Tortuguero.

Very pleasant place to stay. Rooms clean. I had reserved a "standard" room on downstairs level but when we arrived we were directed to a more expensive room upstairs. We did clarify this with them at that point. Thus, I would watch for occurrences like this. Lots of mosquitoes and some of the rooms did not have screens on windows. Restaurant very nice. Breakfast included, very tasty.

The hotel is situated in the northern part of Tortuguero village: the position is simply fantastic. One side of the hotel is in front of the river and you can appreciate the sunset and the other side is in front of the ocean: no way to choose the wrong room. The rooms are small, but clean and with two seats and a table on the terrace to enjoy the sunset. The hotel has a good and typical restaurant where a full breakfast is also served in the morning (included in room's price).

Spent two nights here. Miss Junie is amazing. The hotel has a beautiful view from the balcony to the garden and the lagoon, where you can rent a canoe and go paddling.
It is only 5 minute walk out the back door to the Ocean and the beach where you can see turtles. Miss Junie's dogs also are adorable companions. But the best of all is Miss Junie's cooking. Breakfast and dinner, it was the best!!!

Hotel Miss Junie has an accommodation block near the famous restaurant. Each room has large windows with mosquito nets and a ceiling fan so they're not too stuffy. We went in August which is rainy season but it might be hotter at other times of the year.

The rooms were very clean even though this would have taken a lot of effort (it's easy to walk sand into the rooms).

The walls are a bit thin so you can hear others but we didn't hear anyone at night.

There's a nice garden overlooking the lagoon with palm trees for shade (there's no shade on the beach so it can be rather hot).

Miss Junie's can organise turtle egg-laying tours for USD 20 each (which includes any national park tax). It's Miss Junie's daughter who does the tour and she was reasonably knowledgeable.

The Hotel can also organise canoe tours (with the enthusiastic octogenarian guide called Bill) for USD 20 or so.

Note that the exchange rate you get for using colones is terrible - use USD wherever possible.

If there was one disadvantage to Miss Junie's it's that the toilet system isn't particularly powerful so the toilets can smell a bit. It didn't affect us at all when we closed the bathroom door though.

If you're staying here, make sure you insist that the boat drops you off at Miss Junie's. Otherwise you'll get dropped off in the centre of the village and have a 500 metre walk with your luggage for no reason.
