“Rustic, excellent value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

The ferry service from La Pavona left us at the back side of the resort, which made me ask the driver if he was sure this was La Baula. Looked totally crumpy and abandoned. But forget the first impression. Once you make it to the front, the picture changes. The cabins are rustic, clean and have all you need. Great pool. The staff is very friendly, offered us an excellent guide Miguel for the 6am morning canoa tour in the park. 20usd per person, our little one free of charge. This place is a good option for those not expecting luxurious accomodaton but still very good facilities and services.

Relaxing spot.

Great staff.

Room was ok, there were screens on the windows, no windows, no AC, not a problem for me, but maybe not everyone.

The lodge is isolated away from town and requires a boat ride across to get to town. The benefit of this is that it is very relaxing and quiet.

I wouldn't spend much time in Tortuguero, not much to see or do here unless you are really interested in sea turtles, the hiking and nature is better in other areas of CR.

We stayed at the lodge on Feb. 13, 14 and 15, 2014 while visiting Tortuguero.
You can access the lodge by a short boat ride from Tortuguero docks. The cost is approximately ($1, 500 Colones per person).

The room was clean, spacious and facing the pool with chairs available for lounging on the veranda. The bathroom was large and clean with clean towels every day. We enjoyed waking up to the howler monkeys and the birds.

The lodge has a small gift shop that also serves as the reception area where you can reserve tours. It also includes a small library with used books available if you have forgotten yours.

The pool was always clean and perfect for an afternoon nap after a day out.

There is a bar just next to the docks; we were surprise to be greeted upon our arrival with a nice cool fresh juice, much appreciated. The bar tender, Michael is very pleasant and most helpful. Happy hour - 2 for one I believe starts at 4 p.m. You can also be privileged to live music, the duo; Bernardo and Rony were very good, we were very surprised by the quality of the music. The duo also moonlights as the management team!

The food at the restaurant was great, in fact we chose to eat all our dinners their instead of in Tortuguero. The service is excellent and Miguel was great and very helpful.

You might find it a bit isolated if you stay at the lodge for a longer period of time without going out on tours or visiting the surroundings. Having said that, a 2 night stay while relaxing at the pool all day might be very enjoyable. Great quality/price if you plan on using this lodge as a base camp for touring during a longer period.

A couple of constructive criticisms:

Mini Fridge: A mini fridge in the room would go a long way.

Tours: For some reason, the tours available were not promoted as much as we would of thought. Perhaps management could look into packaging a couple of options, with selected guides, since the guides offered in Tortuguero are not of equal quality... just a suggestion. The hotel recommended a guide to us, Alejandro, he was excellent.

Kayaks: Also, if the lodge had a couple of kayaks and canoes available this would make it an A1 plus lodge.

Maintenance: A couple of minor things could be fixed or upgraded, for exempe the ceiling fan in our room was faling apart, but again minor, minor stuff.

I would like to thank all the staff that made our stay so special!
Anne (and Jean) from Quebec.

Room Tip: I haven't seen other room, but our room which was the first row in front of the pool was pretty...

Good service, all the staff were happy to help and make your stay better. We ate at our hotel everyday as it was convenient because the town is a short boat ride across the river and the food is very good! Not to mention there are very few restaurants in the small town. None of which looked very appetizing. The pool area is very nice and the pool itself is clean and refreshing. The room and food was all good value. The howler monkeys are very noisy every morning around 5 right outside the hotel but its the jungle, so it's all part of the experience. One down fall was the monkey poo on the sidewalks which was quite smelly.

Relaxing, best food and service, peacefull, jungle sounds, no bugs, great pool. If you don't like this place then you shouldn't travel! We've been every where and this is right there in the top of the canopy.

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon and it was absolutely perfect! We were looking for somewhere quiet where we could just relax in a beautiful place with no demands or busy activity. Our time at La Baula was just what we needed. The lodge is very charming and kept in great condition. But what made it even better was the amazing quality of their staff. The cooks were unbelievable and the wait staff were so friendly and spoiled us! The lodge is family owned, and the family was so friendly and wanting to help us have a great honeymoon. They went above and beyond a normal staff to give us a great experience. The tour guide, Miguel, was so much fun and although we couldn't afford many tours, the ones we took were great! I would highly recommend this lodge to anyone!

I absolutely love this lodge. You're right on the river and pretty much in seclusion which makes it so relaxing. The rooms are average and with ceiling fans but you're in the jungle so it was perfectly fine. I will miss the staff the most ... they boost you with energy and get your day started. They're all English speaking and have the best stories and recommendations. The tours they provide are outstandingand service was impeccable ... and, even though it's not at all expected, I couldn't help myself from even overtipping! Now, the food ... ALL meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) were included in the rate and all of it was phenomenal, especially the fish! One of the most delicious fish we've had. If you go there (which Highly recommend) please say hello to Luis, Choncho and Miguel (and of course everyone else) from KIm and Mike from L.A.). Pura Vida!!! :-)
