unless you are Tarzan and used to sleeping in trees...this place is a unique spot that you are unlikely to find any where else. Our own cabin plunked in the jungle with monkeys all around. And yet still all the comforts of a regular hotel (spotless rooms- adequate showers - swimming pool - and bar). Food was quite good given the remoteness. Staff were also very helpfull. Visiting the Tortuguero park by boat was a highlite of our trip.

Room Tip: ask for a room at the back of the property (quieter and more jungle atmosphere) Rooms 16-18 are grea...

We travelled from San Jose by bus, 3 hours, and boat for the last hour or so. The rooms are set in a forest area with no windows but security and mosquito screens. A great view out but a bit damp! But no problem. There are lots of trips on boats to see wildlife, on foot through the forest and a pleasant walk through the village. And we had a great guide called Willis. Thre is a lot of wildlife to be seen on the trips but also in the Lodge; we saw snakes, frogs momkeys and a lot of birds.
The food was buffet but good with very friendly staff

Evergreen lodge was an unforgettable start to our Costa Rica vacation! The boat trip, the monkeys in the trees, the colors of the jungle right around the huts are more beautiful than you can imagine. The huts offer basic comfort, good enough for two days (but it did not rain, otherwise the windows with gauze mesh only might have let in quite a lot of moisture). The buffet-style meals were very good. Every staff member we met was very friendly. The guides were very knowledgeable, although sometimes a bit too long-winded. The swimming pool and bar area are gorgeous, but watch out for mosquitoes. Their calm zip line is a nice way to test whether you want to go for more adrenaline elsewhere. Highly recommended for young and old!

Tortuguero (which means Land of Turtles) was our first stop on a coast to coast trip to Costa Rica. It took almost all day to get to the resort from San Jose, first by bus over winding roads, then about an hour by boat through tight canals. Evergreen Lodge (and the entire town of Tortuguero) is very difficult to get to any other way... perhaps a good thing.

We were greeted with fruit smoothies as we arrived, and were slowly dispersed to find our cottages. While we were there, about 80% of the guests at the resort were actually from Costa Rica. We were told that people come from all over the country to visit this place and that the Costa Rican tourism department had a lot of programs for locals.

The entire complex is spread out, with individual cottages dotted around the property and a couple of different communal dining areas. We stayed at one of the 5-plexes (although I think only 3 of the rooms were occupied at the time).

This place is paradise. At night, the silence is sometimes broken by howling monkeys or the sound of cicadas. If being in the middle of wetlands and the jungle appeals to you, then this is the place to be. The pool is shaped like a turtle... absolutely photo-worthy. The breakfasts aren't that great, albeit filling. Definitely hit the bar though at sunset for a refreshing tropical drink. There was live music and dancing when we were there in October.

If you have time, hike around the property. They have a short hanging bridge and a tarzan swing (we didn't get to do this) and just beautiful greenery all through out.

The "town" itself is a short 10 minute boat ride away from Evergreen Lodge. Absolutely worth the trip to check out the incredibly colorful homes and buildings (very Caribbean). For dinner, we recommend Wild Ginger and Budda Cafe for a sumptuous meal.

Although Tortuguero is on the Caribbean coast, don't be fooled... the beach isn't that inviting. We didn't stay up late enough to catch the giant turtles, but you could see tracks of them the following day (note: you have to hire a guide to go turtle watching as they are a protected species).

Be forewarned... it is the rainforest so bring LOTS of bug spray!!!

We did an eco-tour of Costa Rica with Collette Vacations - great value. Our first stop after San Jose was Evergreen Lodge.
The only way into the Lodge is by boat (or possibly by air). There are no roads here. For someplace where one has to travel 10 miles an a very rough gravel road and then 1.5 hours by boat, Evergreen Lodge is surprisingly luxurious. We had our own large cabin (on stilts) with two beds and a nice bathroom. There is no air conditioning but the large screened windows and ceiling fans keep the place quite comfortable, especially at night. The area is beautiful, green and lush. The food is very good and as it is served buffet style, one can eat whatever one wishes and as much or little as one chooses. The pool is in the shape of a turtle, quite appropriate due to the nearby Tortugguero turtle sanctuary.
We stayed two nights, which is the minimum time that should be allocated to this resort. We had two trips on small open boats through the nearby small channels. This gave us the opportunity to see lots of caymans, birds, monkeys, lizards, etc. At the resort itself, we also saw some of the same animals plus poison dart frogs, green frogs and even a coral snake.
This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip.

Just getting to the lodge is an adventure as it is normally by boat through the wetland forests/jungle and there is lots to see. Be aware the road to the dock is unmade up for some 10 miles so be prepared for a bumpy ride.
The accommodation at the lodge is simple but comfortable with the focus understandably being on eco tourism. You may well have visitors in your room - especially if you leave your door open - such as frogs, small lizards and bugs but that is only to be expected and the frogs and lizards are there to eat the mosquitoes anyway. We were advised by NHS website that this was still a low risk area for Malaria and none of our party took tablets but obvious precautions against bites. Dengue fever is also a risk.
The wildlife visits the lodge regularly and we had howler monkeys and white faced Capuchins leaping around the rooftops of our rooms, numerous poison dart frogs and a wide variety of beautiful birds in attendance.
The norm is to have a guided boat trip around the small channels in a small motor boat. Try and get one without a roof as a lot of the animals are in the trees and whilst a roof is good for the inevitable rain, it does restrict your viewing. Canoes are available to take out but unfortunately we didn't have the time.
I would recommend at least a two night stay (one is definitely not long enough) but ideally three nights especially if you can go in the turtle laying season
The village is a 5 minute boat trip away and there is a very loud disco there which did trouble some of our party lodging nearer the channel as the noise does carry.
Food is good, service is very good and the staff are all friendly. The pool is excellent and you can cool off whilst watching the monkeys feeding if you're lucky.
Drinks are reasonably priced and water fountains are provided to all the rooms FOC. Tap water is not recommended for drinking.
There is also a good board walk which takes you some 400m into the jungle and offers the chance of more animal encounters at your own pace.

Room Tip: Try and get a room as far back in the jungle as possible for the wildlife and also to minimise the d...

As appears to be the norm, we visited Tortuguero on a package deal (one-night only), staying at Evergreen which is one of several Tortuguero lodges. We booked through Lands in Love Tour Operators (Lands in Love resort being the next stop on our trip). Being a package tour, the entire trip out of San Jose is organized for you which made it felt a bit like we were being herded from place to place like sheep, however it is a no-stress way to travel.

At the transfer point from tour-bus to boat, we were a little surprised there are no docks and passengers had to negotiate the somewhat steep and slippery river bank down to the boats while carrying luggage. Could be challenging for those who are mobility-impaired but I suppose there are plenty of tour-guides around to assist if necessary.

Our room at Evergreen lodge was fairly basic but large, clean and quiet. No hot water in our shower which was annoying. No significant issues with bugs. Buffet style food was plentiful with sufficient vegetarian choice for us. We also enjoyed sipping cocktails beside the turtle-shaped pool. Tortuguero town visit and canal boat tours (all part of the package) were very interesting and wildlife viewings were great.

Definitely felt the Tortuguero visit was worthy of inclusion in our first-time Costa Rica tour.
