“Close to town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2014

We came here as we needed a respite from the heat and humidity. My partner was ill and this place helped somewhat. The pool is a lifesaver and the food is great for Porto Viejo. The owners are working on the mosquito issue but you have to remember that all hotels here are basically built on a swamp here.

Marta the owner is great as were the rest of the staff. If for some reason I was ever to return to this mosquito, Rastas, ganja and surfer ridden cesspit corner of the Caribbean, then this is where I would stay. A little work on upgrading this place could really make it stand out and become a jewel.

I loved the sloths in the garden too.

Room Tip: The suites with aircon are great if that is your budget. The other rooms are much more basic.

We read some mixed stuff regarding the location, but do not fear it is not kilometres from the centre of town. The sea is basically across the road (not that you would want to swim in it there) and it is a 5 to 10 minute walk to the amenities of town, but it is non stop shops, restaurants etc on the way so you are not in the middle of nowhere. There is a good Soda just across the road which does well priced and tasty cakes as well as other things.

Bike rental place a few minutes out of town (as you leave Lotus Garden, right, on the right side of the road, it is a small place run by an Italian called Ivan) and we would recommend the cycle to Punta Uva for a few dollars.

We were greeted by the owners who were friendly and helpful, showing us the sloth in the garden, etc.

We took advantage of a promotion and got a air con room for $5 cheaper than normal. We also saw the non-air con rooms which are much further back from the pool/reception area and not as well decorated. The paving slabs were very slippery in the rain, so perhaps having to walk more on these would be an issue; however we felt that for the increase in money the air con rooms were not really worth the price.

Non-air con rooms were also bigger and still nice, but we didn't choose them because since they were surrounded by trees etc, we thought there would be more mosquitoes, etc at night. On the other hand, these rooms may have been perfect to avoid the bar noise at night.

This was one of the more expensive rooms we had in Costa Rica and was not one of the best, however it was fine. The room looked good, but there was a damaged floor which could easily injure someone. I stuffed it with paper to reduce risk of injury, but housecleaning removed this.

Big whirlpool bath looked good, but only shower part worked, and there was no shower curtain. We suspect this is where the cockroaches came from as we had a daily visit despite killing the ones that came. We did see cockroaches in one other hotel on our trip and understand this is the tropics, so no problem.

Sink was on a kind of ledge which meant washing was more difficult than it should be as you couldn't get your feet close to the base of sink. There was also no towel/mat provided by the shower which only added to the water woes.

No wardrobe, however the bed frame came in very useful for hanging towels, wet clothes etc. I am not sure this was its intended purpose but it sure came in useful.

Mattress was probably worse we came across in our trip and springs could be felt through it, pillow was also too thin so I had to use a t-shirt for head support. However bed was a good size and sleep was okay except the final night where loud music from a bar kept one of us awake till the early hours (never forget your earplugs wherever you go!).

We had no humidity issues and the air con was very useful.

Doors to balcony were not the easiest to open.

The aforementioned paving slabs in a Gaudi-esque style were pretty but potentially lethal in the rain.

Only place we stayed on this trip that did not provide breakfast of any sort, and when combined with the fairly high price I think better value needs to be achieved. All that needs to be provided is bread and jam and that is the breakfast tick done and brings hotel more in line with competitors.

Like other places in Costa Rica no mosquito nets were provided which we find odd.

Pool and gardens nice. But at dusk we wouldn't recommend to be at the pool, it was full of mosquitoes in a second.

We were offered a room next to the swimming pool in the first place, but we realised it had a power generator or something like that in the wall, so they recognised sometimes it could be a little bit noisy. For that reason they offered us the one above it.

My comments may all sound a bit negative, but in general this place is above average for the money (based on searches on internet, I did not check out alternatives whilst actually in Puerto Viejo), and has a lot of potential, but it all feels a bit style over substance... Recommended though.

This is a VERY basic hotel. No air conditioning in our room and lots of bugs. The people weren't particularly friendly.

The location is good. Easy to get to local attractions, beaches and hiking.

But the Mosquitos, especially in the restaurant, are relentless. As are the cockroaches in your room!

Español: (for english comment look below)

My father and I stayed a total of three nights at Lotus Garden. This is a great hotel, with pool, restaurant, and is in a superb site (10 meters away from the beach and near the center of the puerto viejo). We first stayed in one room and then another. The first was $ 90. A large room decorated tastefully. With large space, a living room, high ceilings, huge bed, and a Jacuzzi, TV and air-conditioning - this room was highly liked by my father, and at a great price for what you get. We had to change room as it was reserved for the next two nights by others. The second room ($ 70), was smaller, but had the same things than the other room. Overall we were perfect and we recommend both depending on the budget of each person. My only objection and recommendation is intended to put reading lamps. As a hotel room i certainly give it a great note and recommend it to my friends and family.

But for me, the most important of Lotus Garden are its Spanish owners. Raul and Marta are a lovely marriage. The will repeat, lovely. They recommended us many things to do. Things such as where to dive, eat, travel etc. .. I can not stress enough how well they advice us. Thanks again for being so useful.

Ps I hate writing long comments, and never do. But I thought this the least raul and Marta deserve after behaving exceptionally well with my father and me. Good luck with your dream

Guillermo

This hotel is well located close to the beach and a short walk to the centre of town. It has a nice pool and an interesting garden-style layout. We stayed in one of the lower priced private double rooms ($40 for fan only). The room was spacious and quite clean although the fittings were basic and there were no mosquito nets. Perfectly adequate, but just didn't really impress.

I was not sleeping in that hotel but I happened to enter the restaurant and met the Spanish Owners. They were really nice and we even spent time have beers together that night and the next night. If you are lucky, you can see a sloth in the tree of the garden, looks like the animal lives there or just likes that particular tree.
The cooks are local girls but they were trained by the previous asian owner and I have to say I had a delicious green thai curry that reminded me my trip in Thailand.
The decoration and the design of the restaurant and garden are also nice.

For a couple of weeks me and my husband look for a hotel where to stay in Puerto Viejo for our anniversary and have the Lotus Garden in our minds.

After waiting for an email with some pics that were promise to us by a friendly lady, over the phone, which by the way we never get, we decide to stay for one night, which for us, was enough.

We must say that the hotel is quite a disappointment, although is a very unique structure, that for us with a little TLC it will become the gem that is hidden now.

In general some walls looks dirty, there were cockroaches, which i scare to death. Some mice makes us acknowledge their presence with noises during the night, the bed was incredible hard and uncomfortable. The bathroom has this huge bathtub that didn't work, and the halls floors are dirty as well.

We must say that our stay was worth because at our arrive we met the owner Raul, who is a very, incredible friendly person, making our stay lovely and warm. He gave us tips and information about the area, and also about some hidden places around the area as well.

In general this hotel is worth to stay for a night or two if you get a great room. Unfortunately not our case
