We wanted an accommodation near Puerto Viejo that had a pool and was by the beach. Azania is a short walk to the beach, down a dirt path and across the road but you cannot see the ocean at all from the property. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The grounds are beautiful. However, the bungalows are very, very dark and depressing and were quite hot! They have heavy wood lattice on the outside of the window openings and each window has black screening on the inside. Even in daytime, you cannot see a thing inside without the lights and it's nearly impossible to read. We had to move our bed closer to the door in order to take advantage of the overhead fan -- the bed is normally positioned underneath the loft floor and gets no air circulation from the fan. We were very disappointed with the pool; it was a greenish color (which they told us is how it is painted, but it looked greener than any photos we saw on the various websites) and it was cloudy so we ended up not using it. Unfortunately, we had booked for 4 nights and their strict cancellation policy did not allow us to check out early without forfeiting 100% of our money. I would not stay here again and would not recommend it. Also, the food in the restaurant was not very good.

The Azania bungalows are a slice of paradise. My husband, son, and I stayed there for nine days. The grounds are gorgeous, as is the swimming pool, and, for the price, the bungalows are much more fun than a standard hotel. My teenage son particularly liked having his own space in the sleeping loft. My husband and I enjoyed lazing around on the hammocks. You really won't miss the air conditioning as there is a constant breeze. The insects aren't too bad, except after a rain, in which case you will want to use repellant and the netting they provide. The owners and staff were consistently friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. The food in the restaurant is outstanding! I highly recommend this place and will likely return. - Just a couple of things to be aware of: the roads leading to Azania are not paved and full of potholes, so be careful. Also, playa cocles is a surfer's beach. It is not safe for swimming. If you want to swim, you will need to go to Punta Uva or Manzanillo.

“Nice place”

Azania was a lovely place to stay. Our bungalow was large enough for the two of us and also had a loft. The front porch was large and had a nice hammock. The pool was very nice, clean and surrounded by lush vegitation.
The breakfast food was OK, but nothing to remember. I had one dinner at Azania. It was a steak that tasted fine, but was quite tough. (I have to admit that I felt like I should of known better.)
One thing to know is that the bungalows don't have solid walls, more like screen and lathe. I didn't mind this it was just that a woman next to us was sick and we could hear her coughing day and night which got a little old after the second day.
The owners were on vacation when we were there and the staff was not overly friendly. It was more like the were tolerating us. Keep in mind we did get service, just not the type I'm used to getting at a nicer place. they did their jobs, but did not really go out of their way.
They did have a TV in the reception area and I did get to watch my beloved Packers on satalite.

We stayed at Azania for 2 out of the 3 nights we were in Puerto Viejo. We were really happy with our room. For $85 a night, you could easily have had 4 people in the room - a great bargain! Plus, the owners were very nice and accommodating. The breakfast was delicious. We had to order the night before and the food was ready soon after we sat down for the meal. We ate dinner there and it was good. We had arrived late and were happy to have a nice meal without having to leave the hotel.

“Nice quiet place.”

The Azania Bungalows are a nice quiet place to stay. Cocles Beach is just across the road. The road before you get there is extremely rocky and rough. The room itself was nice. It needed more lighting because the bungalow was pretty dark. We enjoyed our stay there. There were a few bad aspects to this place though. The first was the HORRID smell. The rooms are not air conditioned and it is very hot in Costa Rica. You can stand the head if you sit outside on your nice porch complete with a hammock. However, the air outside smells like something died and is rotting. My husband thought the smell was from the sewer behind our bungalow. I don't know what it was, but it was awful. You cannot smell it when you are inside. Also, the pool closes at 8 p.m. I am not sure why. They have a nice pool area and it is lighted. We would have really like to enjoy this area past 8 p.m. The restaurant that is located in the hotel is incredibly expensive. It has a very limited menu and you would never be able to afford eating there. There were very few guests ever eating here. Every morning you get your choice of breakfast which mainly consists of eggs, bacon, some dry bread (toast), a bowl of fruit, some watered down juice and coffee. The egss are always under cooked. It would have been nice if they offered pancackes but for some reason Costa Ricans think all Americans like eggs and bacon. None of the stafff is very friendly. For the price that it costs to stay here, I think you could find some place nicer. I wouldn't stay here again. Once was enough. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't great either.
