The Azania Bungalows are a nice quiet place to stay. Cocles Beach is just across the road. The road before you get there is extremely rocky and rough. The room itself was nice. It needed more lighting because the bungalow was pretty dark. We enjoyed our stay there. There were a few bad aspects to this place though. The first was the HORRID smell. The rooms are not air conditioned and it is very hot in Costa Rica. You can stand the head if you sit outside on your nice porch complete with a hammock. However, the air outside smells like something died and is rotting. My husband thought the smell was from the sewer behind our bungalow. I don't know what it was, but it was awful. You cannot smell it when you are inside. Also, the pool closes at 8 p.m. I am not sure why. They have a nice pool area and it is lighted. We would have really like to enjoy this area past 8 p.m. The restaurant that is located in the hotel is incredibly expensive. It has a very limited menu and you would never be able to afford eating there. There were very few guests ever eating here. Every morning you get your choice of breakfast which mainly consists of eggs, bacon, some dry bread (toast), a bowl of fruit, some watered down juice and coffee. The egss are always under cooked. It would have been nice if they offered pancackes but for some reason Costa Ricans think all Americans like eggs and bacon. None of the stafff is very friendly. For the price that it costs to stay here, I think you could find some place nicer. I wouldn't stay here again. Once was enough. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't great either.

“Nice bungalows, service just okay”

Azania Bungalows

Mar 12, 2008

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights on our honeymoon. The bungalows are cute and the hotel is located just across the street from a beautiful beach. Keep in mind that the bungalows are open-air and your neighbors are close-by.

The only thing that tainted our experience was an issue when we first checked-in regarding our booking. We had wanted to pay in cash, but the hotel would not accept some of our bills (so if you plan to pay in cash, make sure you have brand new bills with no folds/creases!). Paying by credit card was no problem, but I was a little displeased to see that there was a considerable credit card fee...which no one had informed me about when I agreed to use this method. When I brought this up to the staff person helping us (who I believe may have been a manager or even an owner!), we were treated quite rudely and like we were being such an inconvenience! Now my husband and I are used to backpacking and staying in hostels when we travel (so we definitely splurged on our honeymoon hotels!), so we definitely are not too picky or ultra sensitive about being treated like royalty in the places we stay....so the fact that we were offended by the lack of customer service we received says something.

However, other than this issue, our stay was pretty good and the rest of the staff were helpful. Another location in Puerto Viejo to consider...where we received EXCELLENT customer service...is Banana Azul.

“Amazing Azania”

My partner and I stayed at Azania for 2 nights as part of a tour made for us by our travel agent in Costa Rica.
We loved it here and out of the eight hotels we stayed in over the duration of our trip - this was our favourite!
It has a lovely authentic holiday feel to it and the staff are great.
The breakfast is just perfect and the dinner there is really really good.
The bungalows are a good size and have hammocks on the porch. There is no air con so be warned.....
We advise anyone to go here from one night to a week, its good value and will really give you that holiday feel thats also a bit different from the norm.

What an enjoyable place! My wife and I stayed here for a week as part of our honeymoon in Costa Rica. Very rustic exotic bungalows and lush vegetation. Juan is was friendly and nice. Breakfast every morning was good and delicious. Fresh fruit and juice or eggs! The open air restaurant had good quiet dinners too! This place is one of the nicest in the Puerto Viejo. Don't get me wrong. Don't expect a four or five star hotel. But its a good bang for the buck! And just make sure you have your expectation right before visiting here. The interiors are nice with lot of wood but have no AC and the showers aren't the best but do the job.

We dealt directly with Azania and you can get a good deal if you ask.

The town of Puerto Viejo is a very touristy surf town with lots of good little restaurants and nice beaches with lots of people walking and riding bikes on the half paved/half gravel road. But we rented a small 4x4 and I actually enjoyed driving on it! We did a zip-lining canopy tour and snorkeling/forest hike and enjoyed both. Our favorite beach in the area was Punta Uva. It was an quiet exotic beach with hardly any waves and bathtub water temps. You can even drive up to the beach.

This was a wonderful place to stay. The food was beyond fabulous, we didn't want to eat anywhere else. The beach across the street was so beautiful, the ocean was perfect for swimming and even surfing some days. We rented bikes and rode to the near by areas. The zipline tour, quad tour and ocean fishing were great experiences and they pick you up at the hotel. We plan on returning and this will be where we stay. We would not recommend taking the bus it was fast, but on that narrow highway it was a little scary - we took a minivan back to San Jose, I beleive it was Interbus - much more pleasant experience.
