“Over-rated & over-priced!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2008

We chose this hotel after coming across their website when planning a short trip in Costa Rica. By "beachfront" it means a 300m walk along a gravel forest trail to the beach. The "cabins" are duplex style with your room directly next to someone elses and the next cabin no more than 3 metres away. We stayed 2 nights and during that time there was hot water for about one hour, on the morning we left. Beyond that, there was barely any running water in our en-suite bathroom at all. The best option for a shower was the beach shower attached onto a tree!

When informed, the management said it was a the municipal council's fault/problem!

Granted, the region is relatively remote, but for US$60 a night one has certain expectations - running water is one of them. Either the tariff is severely reduced, or the owners install water pumps! I would definitely NOT recommend this place and definitely will not be staying there again. There are numerous places to stay in Puerto Viejo, and most of them closer to town too!

So unfortunate...yet the water situation in fact besides truly being a municipal problem is also a problem known by all as a drought. When there is little rain and dry periods are closely related to the nino effect in all of CA countries, and the area tends to have more population. We do encounter this inconveniences. In all advertisements we describe our location as "Beach side" different than beach front. Very proud of our location for we make an emphasis in protection the 200 mts beachfront for ecological reasons. 5 kilometers from the main town makes it ideal for a quiet vacation with emphasis in bird watching, hommock resting and simple living...we have no near by discos or bars.pure jungle and beach.

Upon driving our small rented Toyota Prius through Puerto Viejo and the horrible unpaved roads, we arrived at the lodge. I highly recommend getting an SUV for that section of the road. The location of the lodge was just perfect for myself and my girlfriend (25 year olds) because as Thursday and Friday of Holy Week came up the traffic in Puerto Viejo was horrendous and we were far enough away to enjoy peace and quiet. The beach after the beautiful jungle path was one of the best and most secluded that we found down there, it made the vacation. The rooms were decent. We stayed in room 3 and had two double beds with slighly stained sheets and a mosquito net to sleep under that was not the cleanest I have ever seen. The bathroom was so-so, because we did not have much water pressure or hot water a couple of the days since we showered off peak hours. The two owners were not very friendly at all, as a previous reviewer wrote, we only found them at check-in and check-out. The morning breakfast was on par with most of Costa Rica, but you had to ask for gallo pinto because the unfriendly waitress did not offer it with the bread and eggs. All in all, if you can spend much of your time on the beach with the waves and want a realer Costa Rican experience on the Caribbean then you will have a great stay and definitely try the shakes at Casa de Pan, which are great and close by.

  • Liked — The private walkway to the beautiful beach and ocean.
  • Disliked — The staff, the spots on the sheets, and the filthy mosquito nets.

This lodge is for the traveler seeking ultimate relaxation in a family orriented Caribbean style envirenment . Wolf and Wanda Bissinger and family operate from a life time of experience in living all over the world. You will hear stories of their travel and experience the closeness of their family.

Wolf and Wanda are warm and welcoming, taking care of your Caribean experience by giving you the helpful hints that you need to best experience Costa Rica and their community.

The breakfast is out of this world with huge proprtions of fruit and local cuisine.

We loved having access to Playa Chiquita's private beach rather then needing to travel down the road to experience the warm Caribean water.

We heartily recomend the Playa Chiquita lodge for those who want a down to earth home style family orriented travel experience with Caribean spice!

Want to experience Caribbean Costa Rica? This place is the real thing. The hosts were very accomodating and helpful. My words can't begin to describe the scenic beauty of both the resort and the area in general. I would certainly recommend Playa Chiquita to anyone looking for an au naturale Costa Rican experience.

It's a funny thing about reviews. I am actually someone who really counts on other peoples opinions when purchasing an item or going to a hotel or a restaurant.....If a handful of a people say its great there must be something in it. I just bought a printer and read dozens of reviews and based on that made my choice and am super happy with my choice.

But here you can really see the difference in opnions are so relevant! I had chosen Playa Chiquita Lodge based on research I had done and basically because of the location of the private beach. Even though I had a good feeling about choice, still you never know until you get there, right? As soon as I arrived all hesitations melted. I was greeted in the most congenial manner from the owner and was shown to a very tastefully done room which was spotless and well appointed. All questions that I had about town and activities were answered with informative insider tips. But the best part was the pristine private walk to the beach, and while all other local beaches were crowded this one was private, clean and absolutely gorgeous. Concerening the restaurant, the owners no longer have one on the premises but have one in town called Salsa Brava where I had the most amazing grilled fish ever! I can only recommend this place, and have already done so to all my friends and family now that I am back home, it was a suprising treat in every way.

The Playa Chiquita Lodge was the author's mid-range choice in the 2006 Lonely Planet Costa Rica guide, and that's why my boyfriend and I chose it. Its grounds are beautiful, with its own private path to a beautiful beach, and the rooms aren't bad. We stayed there two nights in February 2007. We are not the resort type of people, are really low key, love children, and our standards are not high, but we were really put off and disappointed with our stay. The owners live on the grounds, and their kids were so loud during the day, and the walls so thin, that we couldn't take naps, and their parents did not even say hello or talk to us until we flagged them down to pay for the bill. Also, they no longer have a restaurant, so the "internationally-influenced" dinner discussed in the guidebooks no longer exists. Go stay somewhere else where the owners will shake your hand and acknowledge your presence at least once, and the kids don't keep you up with their awful TV shows, music, and other unsupervised noise.

Although we had to take an additional bus from PV to Playa Chiquita, it was worth it. We had planned to stay only 3 nights and head to Bocas del Toro (major drought that is unspoken unless you research- check it out before you go. We may have gone if we didn't have the kids with us. The famiily we met the first night, had been there. The wife pulled me aside in the kitchen and warned me not to take a chance. In fact, CR is hurting for rain; it showered briefly, the 1st & 2nd evening and in Cahuita, the last day, a few sprinkes). However, we met a family who had instantly been welcomed and greeted with the "Open door policy" and "Honor System," as were we. It's perfect for those not wanting a resort, lavish vacation...but appreciate wonderful visitors and hosts (who are above average in warmth and conversation). Wolfe & Wanda are extremely involved and busy with the community. Their home/hotel offers hospitality which is not necessarily visible. We felt at home and spent plenty of time with our hosts. True, it isn't the Four Seasons, but why would you want that in this pure essence of nature. Truth be told, after 5 nights at Playa Chiquita, we weren't ready to leave. Beyond the beautiful beach and daily volleyball game, the local restaurants are relatively inexpensive. At P.C. Lodge, we were even welcome to use the kitchen and refrigerator. A nice bonus for those wanting to save on cervesa, water, etc. We missed this priviledge upon moving to a hotel in Cahuita. If you get the chance to go to P.C., I highly recommend the lodge. If the hosts aren't available to accomodate your every need...it's probably because they're tending to other business: Salsa Brava, the Music & Arts Festival, and over-all, making Costa Rica and the world a much better place. "Pura Vida!" We just got home and I'm looking forward to our next trip!
