While we didn't "relax" on the beach in Puerto Viejo as we did on the region's beaches a little farther from town, we loved the busy scene on Puerto Viejo Beach. It's the hub of this vibrant little fishing/jungle/reggae/seaside/Caribbean village. Restaurants (some with acclaimed chefs from around the world) dot the shores. Beach vendors abound selling everything from jewelry, Bob Marley towels, leather goods, wooden crafts to drinks and patties and everything in between. In one section of the beach the ripe scent of fresh caught fish wafts through the air. Meanwhile, approaching the streets of town, it's incense that tickles the senses. Grab a spot on the beach or at one of the many ocean view watering holes and people watch to your heart's content. The scene is a mosaic of culture: locals, fishermen, vendors, North American and Europen ex-pats, tourists, surfers, families with children... The young and young at heart alike congregate here to work, play, socialize. There's no place like it! Visit with an open mind and embrace the different!
