Owner description: The Jaguar Animal Rescue Center is already mentioned as one of the top attractions in Puerto Viejo but there's a great way to see this, get transportation and also see two other top sites in the area. The Animal Rescue Centre, Chocolate Lady and Waterfall tour includes: Entrance and tour of the Jaguar Animal Rescue Centre located near Playa Cocles. This centre serves as a refuge and rehabilitation center for many local animals including members of the cat family, sloths, monkeys, snakes and more. After spending around 2 hours at the rescue center you will visit to see organic indigenous chocolate being made — the whole process from the growing of the Cacao plant to the making of chocolate as well as lots of information about the indigenous culture. Last but not least you will do a short hike to a nice waterfall where you can have a swim. Transportation: pickup and drop-off at your Puerto Viejo hotel All for $55. This is a great deal and you can see so much. And a friendly driver/guide who comes along will make sure you are going to have a great time and makes the whole experience extra special.

“Play with the monkyes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

Nice place, nice work, well worth the little entrance fee! You can see a lot, learn a lot and even touch some - or get touched. Just make sure the moneys don't poo on you!

“Very bad.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

This trip is set up to look awesome and is a let down on 2 of 3 counts. The Jaguar center is fine and worth a trip, the Chocolate lady is not worth meeting and their chocolate isn't up to par with the dozens of other chocolate places in the area and Costa Rica. If you want good chocolate in the area go to Caribeans! Very good coffee, and chocolates with great flavors and a tour. The waterfall... don't even get me started on the waterfall. There are pictures of when it must have been nice. At this time of this review, the waterfall is polluted beyond safe use for swimming or anything. THERE IS BARBED WIRE, GLASS, AND RUSTED METAL ALONG SIDE HEAPS OF GARBAGE IN THE WATERFALL POOL. The "hike" is a walk down a flight of stone steps that takes about 5 minutes. The waterfall comes out from under the bridge that makes the street going past the entrance to this place. Don't waste your money. I spent my only non storming day on the east coast with this stupid tour and it was awful. Do not go.

“Great family spot!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

This was our second trip to the animal rescue centre. Many things have been updated since our 2012 visit. Our guide was very informative and entertaining.

“Great Package Deal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

This is a great package deal. Each of the activities is a great standalone experience so having them all wrapped into one package is an excellent choice. The Jaguar Animal Sanctuary is a great insight into the natural wildlife of the area and warms your heart to see what people are doing there for the them when they get hurt or can no longer care for themselves. The Chocolate Lady tour is really cool - in addition to getting an education on the traditional way chocolate is made, you get a really cool insight into the indigenous way of life of the Bri Bri people and their culture in the process. From there you head into the actual town of Bri Bri and eat lunch a little place called "El Refugio" before heading to the waterfall hike - let me tell you: the fried chicken here is some of the tastiest I've ever had and I live in the south! Last is the waterfall hike. You go to a little place out of the way and take a short hike into the jungle to a nice waterfall where you can take a swim in the cool refreshing water. After that, you get some fresh coconuts to sip out of before heading back. The thing that makes this special is that while you can do all this stuff on your own, you have guide escorting you to each of these places who is does a great job of filling in the blanks with local knowledge and a great sense of humor! We did this through Gecko Trail Tours and highly recommend it!

“Good combo excursion”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

So, this is a really high-level way to do 3 different things.. which is really what we wanted for that day. If you want a more in-depth chocolate tour, do the 3 hr tour at Caribbeans. You can do the Jaguar Rescue Center on your own without this tour if you want. And there are lots of options for in-depth nature hikes you can do. But as I said, this was a great little "sample" of the activities which was perfect for our day. The rescue center was very interesting... LOVE the sloths. Alex was a good tour guide. The family that makes chocolate is cool.. it was interesting and, of course, we bought chocolate and coconut oil. I have to say my favorite part was the waterfall. We were the only ones there for a while, along with our guide, Harry. So it felt like a little private paradise. Swimming in the pond under the waterfall, and then enjoying coconut water and fresh pineapple back at the top... heaven! It was a nice day.
