My boyfriend and I stayed at Mother Dear for the last 3 nights of our trip to Puerto Viejo, but I wish we would have stayed there all 6 nights! The 2 cabins are gorgeous and have very comfortable beds, huge balconies that get amazing ocean breezes all day and night (we saw 2 wild horses right on the beach and in the garden from our room a couple of times during our stay), and giant showers with hot water (the only ones we had all 10 days of our trip). Jimmy and Debbie are the sweetest people who were happy to help us in any way they could...from calling us a cab whenever we needed one to having the fridge stocked with some essentials when we arrived to even letting us stay after checkout when our snorkeling tour got cancelled and had to wait until 4pm for the bus to San Jose. We fell in love with Puerto Viejo and will definitely be staying at Mother Dear during all of our vacations there!! Can't wait to see you in May!! :)

What a great trip my wife and I had! Before it was over we were planning the next trip and who we could get to go with us to stay in the other cottage. I have never before walked out on a beautiful Caribbean beach on a sunny morning, looked up and down and not seen a single person. Jimmy and Debbie are excellent hosts; very respectful of our privacy but always there when we had a need. And great at helping with reservations and suggestions too.
When we go back my luggage will be considerably lighter. I will take my snorkel and mask and my camera but I won't be taking socks, shirts with collars, shoes, more than one pair of sandals, no extra beach towels or swim suits (they dry so quickly one is all you need), or long pants.
Thanks Jimmy and Debbie for the great time. Hope to see you again soon.

We stayed at Mother Dear for a week on our honeymoon. Jimmy & Debbie were wonderful and went out of their way to make sure we had a great stay. The cabins are beautiful, and they put up hammocks down in the garden so we could relax and look at the ocean. Falling asleep to the sound of the waves was incredible, and we got what we wanted - sleeping as close as possible to on the beach, but without having to camp - super comfortable bed, bathroom, etc. The cabin felt really private, like we didn't have to worry about anyone being able to see in, but the people in the house nextdoor while we were in Cabin 2, which I believe is a rental owned by someone else and may not always be occupied, were loud sometimes. Granted, we went to bed really early because the birds start chirping so early in the morning there and after dark you need a cab to get around anyway, so we just stayed on a really early schedule (like our EST work schedules, so on Costa Rica time sleeping 8 pm – 5 am-ish). Either way, wonderful, beautiful, romantic place, made very comfortable by amazing hosts, and we highly recommend it! Also, we got to enjoy massages on our porch by their Canadian friend Tup, which was an incredible experience as well - nothing like a massage with the sounds of the ocean in the background.

Room Tip: Cabin 1 may have a quieter neighbor, though I think that may not always be an issue

We loved this place. You will too. The location is great. The beach right in front of MD is awesome. The unit itself is extremely clean, beautifully decorated and comfortable - elegant but not pretentious. The owners are sweet people with good hearts. We will definitely stay there again WHEN (not if) we come back.

If you like to run, just head north from MD on the dirt road past Banana Azul and you'll be in lovely, uncrowded country in minutes. You might have to stop several times, like I did, to watch exotic birds doing their thing. We rented bikes at Banana Azul and spent the day exploring. We really enjoyed eating dinner at Stashu's - a place recommended by MD owners Jim and Deb (see sweet people, above).

By the way, we heard from more than one person in San Jose that the Caribbean side was dangerous and to watch yourself in Puerto Viejo. We didn't find this to be the case at all. It felt safer than a lot of US cities we've visited.

Staying at Mother Dear made our vacation to Puerto Viejo perfect! Jimmy and Debbie are absolutely wonderful and very helpful in suggesting fun things to do during your stay. Their dark-wood cottages have all the amenities to make you feel comfortable on your vacation, and the open porch looking out onto the ocean and private beach is truly amazing. We have traveled to many places, and this was our favorite place that we have ever stayed. We definitely recommend it to anyone coming to Puerto Viejo!

Puerto Viejo is an amazing beach town and there is no more relaxing place to stay than mother dear. The cottages are incredibly nice with a balcony that looks out onto the beach, a kitchen, sitting area, and nice bed. It is only a very short bike ride or walk into town. Jimmy and Deb (the owners) are great- they are there if you need help but really the place is all yours. You will absolutely love this place-

This was our first trip to Costa Rica and what a warm welcome we received from Debbie and Jimmy. From our initial meeting of them, we knew we would get along well and have a great time. They are so hospitable, accomodating and friendly. Their two casitas are charming, private and secure. The construction is solid and the woodwork beautiful. It was like being on an expensive yacht with a varnished interior. The room was spacious and had all the amenities we needed yet simple at the same time. The porch is where you live most of the time and that is delightful overlooking their beautiful gardens and landscaping and of course the beach which is right there. It was our first introduction to black lava sand and Jimmy demonstrated to us how magnetic the sand was--fascinating. It's a wonderful beach for walking and not particularly crowded. Even the dogs like it and there was a group of dogs that seemed to meet at the same time each day and walk and play together with no owners attending, but they were all friendly and tended to mind their own business.

If you enjoy eating out, there is a great assortment of restaurants in town. We don't mind doing some cooking of our own. If you want a relaxed vacation and lots of privacy, Mother Dear is the perfect spot and we give it 5 *****s. Would certainly return.
