“A slice of heaven on Earth!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2012

Look no further -- you've found the best place on the Caribbean coast and you will NOT be disappointed! Mother Dear is a beautifully crafted, incredibly clean, gorgeous beach cottage, made from tropical hardwoods indigenous to the area, surrounded by various tropical trees, with an awe-inspiring view of the sea from your deck. You will not want to leave! And the best part is, you don't have to (except to pick up some items at the market if you choose to cook in), as the cottage is fully equipped. It is a heavenly, relaxing, peaceful paradise. The sound of the sea will lull you to sleep each night and awaken you in the morning. You can walk to town on the beach from the cottage -- and a beautiful stretch of beach it is. Jimmy and Debbie are very accommodating and sweet, and also very helpful as far as tips and advice if you choose to plan excursions away from the beach. My partner and I cannot wait to return, and we never vacation at the same place twice, but broke our rules due to the slice of heaven on Earth we found at Mother Dear! Thank you Jimmy and Debbie!

The pictures do not do Mother Dear justice. We were there for almost a week and could not have been happier. Jimmy and Debbie are such nice and accommodating people. We were supplied with fresh guava right off of their tree behind our bungalow. It was the size of a football! You don't need to rent a car. Bring a backpack and rent some bikes. You're close enough to town and you'll get some exercise. It's a great place to just kick back and relax. The beach, in high season, is almost deserted. The view from your front porch is just wonderful. There were sloths in the trees and we got to meet a youngster up close. We were in the area for two weeks. The next time we're there we will stay at Mother Dear the entire time. Having the little kitchenette was perfect. The staples were supplied so you just needed to get your main courses. There was even cold beer and pop to greet you after the long trek. The details of the bungalow are also really nice. Built from beautifully finished, multi-colored hard woods, the place is really something. With wifi you can be connected if you have to.
Thanks again to such a nice couple, cheers, Jimmy and Debbie!

Room Tip: We appreciated being in bungalow 1.

Mother Dear, and its gracious and helpful owners Jimmy and Debbie, were more than we could have hoped for. The wonderful attention to detail started even before we left the United States. Jimmy was responsive to our requests for help with in-country transportation and when our flight to Costa Rica was delayed he contacted Gecko Trails (our transport company) and helped us make alternative accommodations. And he was there to greet us and make us feel at home even though we arrived much later than expected.

We woke up to Mother Dear and Costa Rica is all of its beauty. The doors open up to the ocean and we could relax to the beach atmosphere and never leave the bed! Pictures CANNOT do the cottage justice. It was bigger than we expected and beautifully contstructed in hard woods with an open air design. It is very comfortable while maintaining a simple elegance.

The cottage is a short (and gorgeous!) walk from Puerto Viejo and we were glad we stayed a little away from the town. The beach was not crowded at all and the way the cottage is situated on the property you feel like it is completely private. At the same time, it was a short and cheap ($4 US) cab ride from town and cabbies knew where to take us even though we spoke limited Spanish.

Jimmy and Deb were the perfect hosts - gracious, warm, knowledgeable, and ready to engage, while still respecting the privacy of our stay. They really helped bring the whole experience together for us and were there to say goodbye when we left at 6am.

We are picky travelers when it comes to accommodations, but can find no faults in Mother Dear and will definitely be back to rest, recharge, and explore as time and life allow.
Cheers,
Ben and Marieke

We spent a fabulous 2 week vacation in Costa Rica that was capped by the best place we have ever stayed. We started in Manuel Antonio on the Pacific and ended at Mother Dear on the Caribbean. We could not have found a better place. A beautiful dark wood cottage on the beach secluded off the highway. With cooking facilities! I would love to tell people to stay away so I could book it for the whole winter, but that would not be fair to all the others. It shows that Jimmy and Debbie have taken hospitality to the next level. Thanks Jimmy and Debbie !! We will see you again next year. PURA VIDA !!

Room Tip: Look for places that have cooking facilities. It costs a little more but it saves a ton in the long...

Motherdear is a thoughtfully executed, serene and relaxing retreat. Loved our four days here in early February, 2012. Jimmy and Debby have created a restful welcoming oasis that you will be sure to love. Great kitchen and facilities in the beautiful cottages so you can cook your own local bass and have dinner on your deck. This is livin!

This was our first trip to Costa Rica, and it will not be our last. We stumbled upon a gem, Mother Dear. Jimmie and Debbie were so helpful and accommodating. Jimmie helped us get our rental car swapped for one that worked ( we speak limited Spanish), they pointed us to great restaurants in town, and let us leave our luggage behind when we were in a transition day while we went on a guided hike.

Their property is amazing. It is steps from the beach, which you may see ten people when you look as far as the eye can see in both directions.  We had wild horses on the property in the morning, and two resident sloths that we kept tabs on living in the trees in front of our cottage. The cottages are built up on stilts, to garner the wind from the ocean as A/C. We spent every morning and afternoon on our deck watching the waves and wildlife. The cottages are beautifully constructed and the woodwork is immaculate. We wished we could have stayed here our whole time in Puerto Viejo.  Pura Vida!

Room Tip: You cannot go wrong unless your not a good person!

Mother Dear was recommended to us enthusiastically, but it still didn't do it justice. We had one of their two large, elevated cottages, imaginatively and thoughtfully designed and built recently with a variety of truly beautiful woods and great attention to detail. A porch with a fabulous view of their gorgeous beach on the Caribbean, really comfortable accommodations with everything easily at hand. Debbie and Jimmy are wonderful, gracious, and interesting hosts, really knowledgeable and comfortable in their community and helpful in every way. They have taken great care and pride in their place, and Manuel and the other folks that help them seem devoted and just as proud. We felt completely at home and at ease, had a really lovely time. We'll recommend it to everyone without hesitation, even knowing that we can't do it justice.

Room Tip: There are two separate cottages, both the same, both wonderful.
