I spent 3 days and 2 nights at the VIP HOTEL Playa Negra. The owner, Miriam, is from Spain (Barcelona) and very helpful. The "hotel" is in private property. Each unit is actually a small house: open-concept with spacious living room and kitchen. Wooden floors and bright colour tiled kitchen counters with all the essential to cook meals, including a microwave. Can accommodate up to six people easily. All windows and sliding doors (there several of them) have mosquito screens and sheers. There were two bedrooms with canopy beds, night tables, mirrors and armoires, and a large bathroom. Painted wooden walls and very high ceiling with fans in the bedrooms. In addition, there is a nice large porch with table, chairs, couch and even a hammock. Very clean.
There is a small swimming pool with chairs of different types lounge beach chairs. Always clean. There is also a small gym for those who cannot live without their workouts. :)
It's located off the beaten path and surrounded by nature. Better if you have a car and could be tricky trying to find the place at night. Since I'm not much of a beach person, this hotel is perfect for anyone looking to relax. You see and hear animals all the time: hummingbirds, howler monkeys, butterflies, beetles , red-eye frogs, snakes and a plethora of birds. Plants and flowers of all kinds. It rained both nights I was there, but I didn't mind at all...absolutely loved it!
Breakfast is served at your unit. It was a bit tricky one morning, though, since it was raining and the path is not covered. One person to hold the umbrella and another to carry the breakfast (2 or 3 trips to the kitchen, which was just 1 min away).
The staff was very helpful (Minerva and Diego were attentive), although they could be better organized for breakfast. The owner was very kind to call restaurants to get dinner delivery one evening and book massage sessions (she gets no commission). [Unfortunately, what we had ordered for dinner was wrong, and we ended up paying more for what we got].
The beach isn't far (we walked there), but I wouldn't walk back after dark even with a powerful flashlight. There are bikes to rent to go into town or the beach.
Certainly not the place if you're a person who doesn't enjoy nature or feel that you need to hear human activity all the time and be at the beach from your room. I highly recommend it to those looking for a relaxing/ romantic break or for reunions (stay in and cook your own food while enjoying nature).
There is Wi-fi, but you've to be patient. And TV as well.
