“Been a while... why?”
I was drawn to Chile Rojo by the advertisement of a band (Los Yukas--awesome!!) playing a one-night show. The drink specials of 2 for 1 (yes, even mojitos) were a fast start to a great night! My husband and I both ordered off the "specials" menu, he had the teriyaki steak, i ordered sushi. Now, as a side note, the unique chance of him (meat and potatoes guy) and I (sushi lover) both being satisfied with a menu selection is pretty slim, we've enjoyed 20 years of marriage because we've learned to compromise on things like this.
Back to the review, the dinner special came with an egg roll for each of us, nice sized, perfectly packed with fresh vegetables, lean chicken and expertly cooked to be hot and crunchy on the outside yet fresh and flavorfully crisp on the inside, and the accompanying sauce was excellent--spicy with a touch of sweet. I could have had 3 of these and called it good, no great!
His steak was cooked to medium rare perfection, albeit, a bit too big of a serving for even him. Shame to waste it, I had three bites to avoid the starving children lecture from a misleading mom who might wander through. Great teriyaki flavor without disguising the taste of good beef, seared hot outside and juicy pink/red on the inside... hmmmm, flesh can be so yummy sometimes! My sushi (6 slices of california roll and 4 of tuna) were excellent as well. This is kind of a staple sushi plate, but hit the spot and allows me to spice it up with plenty of wasabi and ginger.
A surprise ending with a small piece of banana upside down cake, chocolate drizzled on the plate--wow, didn't think I had room, so I appreciated the small serving that left my palate satisfied and my pants buttoned!
The hosts and servers were attentive and efficient. I left wondering why it had been months since eating there, it was a truly wonderful evening. So, Andrew, thanks for coming to the boat the other day to buy fish, it put you back on my radar. Also, we are really confident that our guests will enjoy what you do with their "catch of the day". (We operate Wahoo Fishing & Tours in Puerto Viejo, many of guests ask us "where do I go to have my fish prepared?")
