“Fantastic place to relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

We just returned from our 7 night stay at Korrigan Lodge. Everything about the lodge was wonderful. The hosts do everything they can to make your stay excellent, make delicious breakfasts, and organize tours/rides/reservations. There are lots of good tours in the area at a good price and the choice of food around in excellent. The beach was also very close and is beautiful. Highly recommend!

Room Tip: All are good.

My review comes a little late but nonetheless I’d like to share my experience. In mid July my boyfriend and I spend 6 nights at Korrigan Lodge, staying in bungalow Dour and we had a great time.

The Lodge is situated next to two very nice beaches, one of which is always swimmable, with some of the calmest and safest waters we experienced during our 4-week long trip around CR. The bungalow itself is very charming and equipped with everything one might need when on vacation, including toiletries, beach towels etc. It’s spotlessly clean and very comfortable. It also comes with an alarm system and a free and safe parking space. Free wireless Internet is available as well.

What I really loved was a 24/7 free use of a kettle and tea in the breakfast area in addition to potable water.

The breakfast is included in the room rate and is very tasty. It’s comprised of several courses, which vary slightly each morning but always include a plate of delicious fresh fruit, a glass of juice, pastry with jam, yogurt and muesli, and eggs with sausage and bacon if you eat meat, completed with a cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate. The owner makes excellent fresh pastry each morning, which is served still warm (it’s usually croissants or madeleines). For dinner it’s easiest to drive a few minutes to a nearby Puerto Viejo, but several restaurants are located within walking distance and one can always bicycle (bike rental is free). I definitely recommend trying rondon at Selvin’s – it’s a kind of a fish soup that’s a local specialty. It’s really good!

The owners are a young, well-traveled French couple who are very nice and helpful with advice on what to visit (and what not to visit) in the area and how to go about it. They are always present (they live next door) and are very hands-on. They speak perfect English and have an adorable dog who follows people to the beach and guards their stuff free of charge:)

While visiting I highly recommend taking a trip to Manzanillo and doing the Gandoca-Manzanillo trek with Florentino Grenald, who we both fell in love with. Korrigan Lodge is located very close to the Jaguar Center, which we also loved (as opposed to the Sloth Sanctuary, which is just horrible!!!).

The only cons of Korrigan Lodge that could just as well be a plus to some people is that it’s kind of in the middle of nowhere – it’s not really near any town. But renting a car will solve all possible issues you might have with that.

Overall, it’s a great place to stay. I would recommend it.

We spent 5 nights at Korrigan Lodge at the end of our 14 day trip and we absolutely loved it! Everything is just so perfect, the bungalows are comfortable, super clean and very spacious and the decor is gorgeous. Great security as well with safes in the room and each bungalow has it's own alarm although we felt so safe here.

I can't say enough about the breakfasts, they are fantastic with fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, eggs, bacon and croissants. So incredible! The reception/lounge are where breakfast is served was a great place to meet and chat with fellow guests, new friendships are made here! Ingrid and Erwan are the perfect hosts and can give you lots of tips for restaurants and things to do in the area. Ingrid was so awesome to take the time to show us the beautiful garden and explain the plants and point out sloths and iguanas that were hiding up in the trees. She really has a good eye for finding the critters. On the first evening we arrived, spider monkeys visited just before sunset and each morning the howler monkeys would pass through the property, loudly making their presence known.

A short walk takes you to the best beach on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica with great snorkeling right off the beach. Of course I can't forget Bassam, the resident dog. He will be your best friend for your visit and will accompany you to the beach, swim with you and watch your belongings. He is the ambassador of Korrigan Lodge!

Room Tip: All the bungalows are great!

We decided on Korrigan Lodge for our Costa Rican adventure based on the Trip Advisor reviews. From the very beginning, my correspondence with Ingrid was extremely helpful, punctual and friendly. I tend to ask lots of questions, (particularly because we rented a car) and Ingrid did not seem remotely bothered by my multitude of emails. Everything we were told was very useful, especially the directions. They made it VERY EASY, do not be afraid. It is essentially one road the entire way there.

We arrived around 6:30 local time, it was pitch black but we were easily able to locate the lodge. Erwan greeted us, and showed us our bungalow. He was very polite. As far as our bungalow goes, we stayed in Heol I believe. It was perfect. The bungalows are very secure and safe feeling. They are also miraculously well ventilated. I still do not understand how I felt more comfortable in the Jungle, than in my home with climate control.

Breakfast was amazing. Erwan's service was friendly and made us feel very comfortable asking for certain things. Ingrid's croissants were fresh and delicious. She is an amazing baker. I was very full after each breakfast, and we usually sat there to talk with the other guests and Ingrid and Erwan for a while after.

As far as what to do while there, ask Ingrid and Erwan. They listen very well, and are excellent at recommending specific trips for people that suit them best. We loved the Jaguar Rescue Center, and the hike through Manzanillo the best. The restaurant options around there are plentiful. To name a few: El Refugio (outstanding food), Pura Gula (laid back, good prices, great pizzas), and Jungle Love (cool dude, cool food, GO HERE).

All in all, you should not look elsewhere, Ingrid and Erwan are amazing people and they will make you wish you could never leave. They are kind, intelligent (especially when it comes to local flora fauna), generous, and more helpful than you could believe. While we were there, we spent lots of time talking to them. They are not your typical hosts, they really care about connecting with the people who travel there.

Oh, and Basaam! WE LOVED HIM.

Korrigan lodge exceeded all expectations: First, the breakfasts were amazing with 4 courses of papaya/mango/pineapple, yogurt and granola, freshly baked choclate croissant, and then either crepes or eggs. Second, the huts are clean, updated, and the security is amaing with an actual alarm for the rooms and a safe. Third, free bikes to use for the 5mi bike ride into town, manzanillo or resteraunts. Fourth, just a cross the street from a gorgeous beach. Fifth- we saw bats on the outside of our huts, 2 sloths near the reception area, howler monkeys above our hut, and 2/300 green macaws left in Costa Rica are also viewed on their property. Korrigan lodge really is a paradise you must visit. NOt to mention, the owners were incredibly friendly. Ingrid was always letting me know if she found an animal on the property and walked me around her property introducing me to every plant since i was curious about the wildlife. Ingrid and Erwan have such patience, generosity and kindness.

Room Tip: stayed in Heol which was beautiful- nice queen bed, clean, didnt see any bugs in the room which was...

I fully agree with all the other reviews, this place is excellent! The hosts are wonderful, and very helpful and always seeking to improve their cabins. The cabins are spacious and comfortable, with a deck outside, and surrounded by trees and wildlife. The breakfast in the morning is fresh and filling. The beach is also only 5 minutes away on foot, and it is the best beach in the area. What more can I say, an absolutely lovely stay, would go back any time, highly recommended!

Me and my wife stayed in the KOAD bungalow. It by far, exceeded my expectations. This is our third time to the puerto viejo area and first time to stay at the Korrigan lodge. You'll have a hard time finding a nicer bungalow for the price. With hosts that go out of there way to assure you of a most satisfying stay. Sadly enough, we only booked it for one night. We won't make that mistake again. We highly recommend this place and look forward to our next opportunity to stay there.
