“What a gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

Korrigan Lodge turned out to be the perfect place to start our trip. Our hut was super adorable and clean, and the reception/breakfast area turned out to be the focal place at the lodge, where all the guests would congregate and get to know each other at various points during the day. Maryse, Pierre and their dog Bassam are truly what makes this place special. They treat all their guests like old friends and go above and beyond their managerial duties. Their breakfasts were top notch and Pierre's enthusiasm for the wildlife and history of Costa Rica was truly contagious. The lodge is situated only a 20mins bike ride to Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo, as well as right across the street from one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever visited. It is also only a short walk away from El Refugio (an Argentinian restaurant with 5 star quality food and service. not to be missed!). I could go on and on. Korrigan Beach is the place to be if you are in the area. Our only regret is that we didn't allow for more time there. We will be back!!

We arrived to be met by the warmest welcome imagineable, from Ingrid and Erwan and also Pierre and Marise who are looking after things while Ingrid and Erwan are in France. We spent the first 45 mins before unloading looking at Sloths and Spider monkeys and Toucans that tend to inhabit the surrounding trees. Amazing! Korrigan has been lovingly created with the least possible impact on the environment, and each hut/cabin is a delight. There are only a few of them, so the attention given by Pierre and Marise to guests is unrivalled. Now, to Breakfast! Easily the best breakfast we had in Costa Rica - lovely fruit arrangement, delicious yoghurt and cereal sprinkle, a different pastry everyday and on top of that your choice of eggs, bacon and sausage cooked to order - wow! Pierre is an avid animal watcher, with an infectious enthusiasm and went out of his way to spot things for us. No review would be complete of course without mention of the wonderful resident dog Bassam, who accompanied us to the beach for a swim and guarded our stuff...so thank you to all at Korrigan Lodge for an unforgettable stay.

We enjoyed 8 nights at the Korrigon Lodge. The cabinas are beautiful, simple, comfortable and well maintained. We had the pleasure of meeting the owners; Ingrid and Erwin, their family and Pierre and Marise. They were all wonderful. They all went out of their way to share information about the area restaurants, wildlife and beaches. We loved the breakfasts. Pierre helped us with a minor medical situation by driving us to the local Doctor. It was a fabulous trip.

It's been almost a year since we were there, but to this day, this place has completely raised the bar of hospitality. Pierre and his wife were the caretakers of the hotel while the owners were taking time to raise their baby. Pierre went above and beyond to take care of his guests. He's passionate about the nature and wildlife, and ran around showing everyone the various flora and fauna on the property. He even took us on a private nature hike (with Bassam following of course :) to Punta Uva and the beach. If that wasn't enough, he then drove us and another guest into the jungle and led us on a long hike to beautiful waterfalls and swimming holes. That's not all! The next day he drove all of us hotel guests to Cahuita park and guided us down the beach/reserve showing us even more flora and fauna. Just note, all of these various trips are actual tours that you can take, but he took us all there just because! I can't say this is to be expected by all guests but it was definitely generous and we had the most amazing time thanks to Pierre. Of course the bungalows themselves were really amazing too of course, clean and new, and in a beautiful tranquil jungle setting. We had only booked 2 nights but loved it so much we booked a 3rd night, in a different bungalow because ours was reserved already.

Just finished 7 nights of a most fabulous stay at Korrigan lodge. We originally chose Korrigan for our second trip to Cost Rica based on these Trip Advisor reviews. The #1 rating and reviews for Korrigan are completely justified. The entire lodge and the cabinas are very well maintained. We were pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness, quality and attention to detail at all levels. The units are not equipped with A/C; however the shade offered by the surroundings and the high ceiling fan allows for very cool conditions within the cabin….no need for A/C. Beyond the basics, the cabinas and the grounds are comfortable, tasteful, and we easily enjoyed ourselves relaxing on the porch of our cabina or wandering the gardens throughout the property. Ingrid and Erwan were away on vacation, but they left Korrigan Lodge in very good hands. Our hosts; Pierre and Marise were such gracious, helpful, wonderful hosts, they spared no effort with each of the guests to make their experience comfortable, fulfilling and unforgettable. They are very knowledgeable about the area, wildlife, botany, restaurants, stores, history, etc. etc. For any interested guests, Pierre arranged a daily event to local points of interest that helped introduce the area. He has an uncanny ability to find (and call) the local wildlife. They make you feel like you’re visiting old friends ….instead of new ones! The breakfast is something to look forward to. You won’t want to miss a single one! Bassam, the dog, is in on it too! He took us to the beach and waited with our things while we enjoyed the surf. We will definitely return. Hopefully, very soon!!

Couple things to note about the area:

A rental car is very helpful. This location is not remote by any stretch of the imagination, but you are a good 30 minute bike ride from Puerto Vjeio and 20 minutes from Manzinillo. Korrigan does however offer free use of their bikes which are in pristine condition.

Do be sure to visit both Manzinillo and Puerto Viejo. Both are very different – Puerto offers shopping and a large selection of restaurants and some nightlife. Manzinillo offers quiet Caribbean surroundings and an excellent grilled Red Snapper at Maxi’s.

Restaurants we tried and would recommend, Depaso (ravioli, steak, tacos), Lazy Mon (great fires, wings), Selvin (curried shrimp, Caribbean chicken), Refugio (mussels, steak, pacific red tuna), Bread and Chocolate (chocolate cake, sandwiches, brownies – we ordered ten to bring home – thanks Tom!).

Room Tip: The cabinas are all the same and they're all great!

The Korrigan Lodge is truly a wonderful place. Our hosts Pierre and his wife (I don't remember her name, sorry) were so kind, funny and very knowledgeable. They both knew the area very well. She gave us many good restaurants recommendations. Along with some does and don'ts of the area.
Pierre, took us to see the BriBri people, and swim at the waterfall. While walking in, we encountered some wildlife, many neat kinds of plant life. He has his Howler Monkey call down to a tee.
Our rooms were fabulous. Being woken up by Howler Monkeys was so cool. I'd recommend this to everyone.
The breakfast was so fresh and tasty, Warm bread, fresh fruit, yogurt with some granola, an egg and bacon. This with juice and coffee. Excellent!
I wish we would have booked more time here. We were here for 3 nights. We will be back. Thank you.

Room Tip: We had the "KOAD" room. This is set back the furthest from the road. Most private. We'...

We loved Korrigan Lodge and our hosts, Erwan & Ingrid, were most gracious, friendly and helpful.
The comfortable, simple and tastefully designed bungalow was in a gorgeous jungle setting with howler monkeys, spider monkeys and toucans overhead. The use of bikes let us get to four different beaches. Korrigan breakfasts were superb and use of the outdoor kitchen was great. The nearby beaches were beautiful, unspoiled and nearly empty. Good snorkeling off shore at Playa Arricife--a very short walk/ride. Erwan drove us to a restaurant one night and they waited for us at our 7 am departure at the nearby bus stop.
We have never had hosts that have cared so much to make our trip memorable. Would recommend Korrigan to anyone loving simplicity, quiet, nature and understated comfort.
