“Very good atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

Despite being a simple hostel, is located in front of a beautiful beach.
Good food and service.
You can choose between shared rooms, rooms for couples or singles, tents, or hammocks.
A little hot, like everywhere in Costa Rica.
Recomended!!!!!

This place is great if you are a flexible and friendly person. I came alone and made friends with the other guests, the staff, even J himself! People say it's loud and crazy, but nothing ever got out of control, and my dorm was quiet for sleeping after ten. The place is a spectacular work of art that really requires an afternoon just to observe and appreciate the thousands of hours that have gone in to tiling, painting, building, and maintaining this huge complex. Campfires on the beach, check. In-hostel bar/restaurant? check. Tons of options for sleeping, from $6 hammocks to $60 pimp suites? check. It's not fancy, but it sure is cool. If you are a backpacker in central america, this place will strike you as the quintessential hostel.

Room Tip: C4 is the quietest dorm i found.

My boyfriend and I had read about Rocking J's (I now think the J stands for Joke. Or Jerks) in a travel guide. Just to preface, we are 25 and 29 years old (so we consider ourselves quite young an willing to go with the flow). Admittedly we knew it was going to be a 'party hostel' but it was more reminiscent of a hostel during spring break or leavers then any cool party hostel we've seen or stayed at... Thankfully we were so tired the ONE night we stayed (we couldn't stay any longer) that we fell asleep but the (bad) music was blaring loudly when we went to bed.

I'm not sure where to begin; with the rude service or the dungeon like room we stayed in. The girl at reception was rude, aloof ad unhelpful until, surprise surprise, not-so-rocking J 'rocked' up then she couldn't do enough for us. We paid $60 for the 'king's palace' (it was more fit for someone high of their head on drugs then any normal traveller). We couldn't help but think it was once a dungeon. The sheets were damp and dirty and my 3 year old nephew could've done a better job with the mosaics (it was so overbearing it gave us a headache). The power kept going off and the wifi was weak at best.

I know I sound like a big whinger but I have never written on a forum until now; I feel so strongly about our bad experience I want to stop others wasting their money! It left a sour taste in our mouths; thankfully another great hostel in town provided a much needed alternative and changed our mind about Puerto Viejo!

then they have a quiet time at 10pm but no one abides by it instead they have music blaring till 1am..so if no one abides by one of the rules does that automatically rule out all the others?in the kitchen they have a camera & a sign saying they are watching & you will pay $20 if you don't wash your dishes. The worst thing about this place is that they have a whole table filled with people's IDs, bank cards, passports etc that people have lost of left behind varnished into a table, now if that was me & I found someone's passport or any document i would simply post it to the address listed on it not permanently put it on show for people to see.Its invasive and they should remove it.

Rocking J's is a huge hostel where you can choose if you would like to sleep in a room, in a tent, in a hammock or even a treehouse. You can bring your own tent or you can rent one. There are lockers for every hammock and tent so it feels pretty safe. There is a beach just in front of the hostel, although you can find nicer beaches a little bit further. The bus that goes to Manzanillo and Punta Uva stops just in front of the hostel. In the evening it is great to hang out downstairs, there is a bar and lots of tables, tabletennis, live music etc. The room was quite warm and humid, and the windows look towards the common area, so it is not the best place if you want to sleep, but everything else is fine, the general atmosphere is really good!

I am at a place as a traveler where I want and expect more from a hostel. I would have loved Rocking J's if I was still in High School but now I found it dirty, loud and the staff rude.

Tent City: Very loud. We stayed in a tent on Saturday night and didn't sleep at all.

Bathroom/showers: Too few and dirty.

Private Room: Bad layout. We seriously couldn't find the bed when we checked in. Turns out it is up a ladder and in a loft. The loud fan helped mute the noise.

Mosaic/ Mirror Artwork: Very cool. I think a lot of drugs and time went into decorating the hostel.

Music: DJ playing experimental trance starting at 9AM is a good way to encourage travelers to get out of the hostel and explore PV.

The place was basic. At that price, that wasn't surprising. We decided to stay in the tents and liked it. The place has charm with lots of mosaics and lots of different art and spaces. However, this is a loud party hostel. The night we were there, there was loud music until at least midnight.

If that's what you're into, you'll have fun and will meet lots of people. You can even see crabs race. If you're into sleeping and relaxing, this is NOT the place to go.

It's up to you! :-)
