4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013 via mobile

Diana was helpful as was the entire staff. They went out there way to help us. The breakfast was good. Felt very safe. Master suite was wonderful. Pool clean. It is away from everything if you like that. We also went to Limón with no problems. No complaints.

Thank you for the great review. Actually, the being far from everything is exactly why we built there. Of course also in hopes that the airport would bring the little airplanes over from San Jose, LOL!

I hope you can come back again and had a great time in Costa Rica

Hotels in and around Puerto Limon are basic and rather grim. It's worth driving a few kilometers south to Hotel Playa Westfalia. The 2-story, motel-style design is nothing fancy, but the staff is friendly and efficient, gardens are pleasantly designed, and rooms are large and well-maintained with reliable hot water, air conditioning and ceiling fans. My standard room even had a little kitchenette with mini-fridge and coffee maker. Good firm bed with clean sheets and decent pillows. The pool is crystal clear and inviting, the beach less so. It's not maintained (flotsam, jetsam, some trash, lots of driftwood), and the surf is rather rough. The restaurant didn't offer much choice behind basic (and tasty) Tico fare, and the bar could be better stocked. Mixed drinks were limited to rum, and beer choices were similarly limited. No wifi, at least in the rooms. A pack of friendly, well-cared for dogs helps guard the place. They barked a couple times during the night but quickly calmed down. I felt secure and would stay here again.

Hotel Playa Westfalia was the perfect way to end our vacation in Costa Rica this year- we relaxed and enjoyed the beautiful resort for two nights this past March. We stayed again in the 2nd floor Master Suite, which is amazing! Very spacious, and the balcony overlooking the pool area is so nice. We walked along the beach each morning and then spent time in the pool getting lots of sun! The breakfasts, which were included in our stay were very satisfying. Diana, the manager, had a birthday while we were there, and she shared a piece of her delicious birthday cake with us! One of the waiters in the restaurant made us a refreshing drink out of a fresh coconut- mmm! Our friend Reymond Smith stopped by one evening to visit us- we met Reymond on Diana's recommendation in 2009 as a tour guide. He gave us a tour of Cahuita National Park and the Tortuguero Canals that year, and we have been friends ever since! Also, I'd like to mention our new friend Danny, who is a wonderful tour guide and driver based in Puerto Viejo. This year he brought us to the hotel and later drove us back to San Jose. This was actually the third time we stayed at Hotel Playa Westfalia (2009, 2011 and 2013.) We love it so much we can't imagine a trip to Costa Rica without staying there!

Room Tip: 2nd Floor Master Suite is Sweet!

Thank you so much for your great review! I always appreciate hearing the feedback from our guests and it is even better when they return to visit more than once.

We are so lucky to have Diana and Reymond as friends, actually more like family!. Without people like them there would not be a Hotel Playa Westfalia!

Sincerely,

Michael & Marilyn Grimes

We stayed with friends for a weekend at the beach. What a pleasant surprise! Very clean hotel, nice accommodations on the beach. Very pleasant staff and a typical Costa Rican fare restaurant. The surf is a fun beach break with punchy waves. The beach is very natural and undeveloped. We will return soon.

We recently made plans to visit Limon in order to spend a day with friends stopping on a cruise boat. We stayed two nights at Hotel Playa Westfalia which is 10 km south of Limon on the beach. Great staff. Comfortable room. We ate four meals at their restaurant and were pleased. Dianna, owner/manager went out of her way to help us with information about the area. Limon is not an area one would want to visit, as it is a rough port town, but if you need to be there, this hotel works well.

I stayed at the Westfalia for two nights and had a great time! Diana was most helpful and accommodated me wherever possible. The hotel is in an excellent location and right on the beach, a great spot to stop if you want to explore the East coast of Costa Rica. Great food and great value! Rooms were also very clean and the hotel was safe and secure.

I stayed Hotel Playa Westfalia with my boyfriend as we traveled to Puerto Viejo. We actually stayed here an extra night because we found it so delightful. My favorite thing about this place was watching the waves crash onto the beach every morning as we ate delicious breakfast in the open-air restaurant. They served us the best coffee and great scrambled eggs with beans and rice. Also, the rooms are nice and spacious, and the A/C works wonderfully (for my fellow hot-blooded Americans). The pool is lovely and cool, and very family friendly. You will most likely encounter kids while staying here, but it's certainly not a problem. The beach is hop away from the hotel, and I highly recommend watching a sunrise from it. The beach itself has some natural debris (such as trees - no big deal at all) and seems less populated in this town. If you want to spend a day on a quiet, natural beach, Playa Westfalia is prime for that. Make sure to introduce yourself to the lovely general manager Diana. She made us feel very welcomed and we were so very grateful for her hospitality. Also, the staff provide very professional service.

Room Tip: Our room was on the side closest to the road. I heard trucks sometimes at night if I left my window...
