Cahuita National park is a great place to go for a easy-moderate hike, swimming and lounging on the beach and for wildlife viewing.
We took a guided tour, the guide took us by boat to the half way point and showed us a few animals, then left us to explore on our own and relax in clear water and on the beautiful beach. I would recommend this option as it makes the hike more relaxed, gets you interacting with a local and gets you started in finding animals. And trust me everything in Cahuita is relaxed, a few hours there and you will be too. You also get to see the park from the water, a different perspective is always nice.
We saw many lizards, crabs, heron, Howler Monkeys and white faced monkeys... bring your camera. If you walk quietly and slowly they are all quite easy to spot. The hike is about 6km long.
Closer to town the waves get bigger, beaches more crowded (though certainly not as busy most beaches in other parts of the world).
There is also a fair amount of coral close to the point. The waves here are MUCH calmer and people we spoke to were having a blast snorkeling.
If you are in this part of Costa Rica you should not miss the chance to go to Cahuita and Cahuita National park,
