“Raw jungle experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2012

Our tour group of teachers spent three fabulous days and nights here. Be aware of the Howler Monkey alarm clock that goes off just before sunrise and sets off the rooster--but if that bothers you, use ear plugs. It was just part of the experience! The birding was spectacular and the beautiful surroundings was even moreso! Morning and night hikes are a must in order to see life in the selva. Take a river tour and go zip-lining!! We spent some time learning to make patacones and empanadas with the local women and bought their jewelry. We will all take back a new appreciation of the tropical rainforest to our students. I would suggest that you pack your own pillow and camping mattress if you are sensitive to sleeping arrangments. An ice machine and water cooler are centrally located to keep you hydrated and more comfortable, but enjoying the jungle makes you overlook any inconveniences you left behind. KEEP A JOURNAL!

We stayed two nights here. This is my third trip to Costa Rica and probably the 9th such resort at which I've stayed. I went with a group of 10+ people.

The negative comments regarding road noise are accurate, although some rooms are worse than others. I stayed in room 23 and found the noise to be atrocious. To add to the aggravation, a nearby neighbor has a dog - one that likes to bark at seven in the morning. The design of the four-room huts is such that sound carries quite easily between rooms, so privacy can be an issue. The room we had was a little moldy on the ceiling, but there wasn't any bad odor. The breakfast buffet was minimal and not very well prepared. The fruit was delicious, but in Costa Rica, everyone serves great fruit so I don't count it. We had one dinner buffet and our entire group regretted it.

On the positive side, the abundance of wildlife is very high. Not only is it a birders paradise, there are countless frogs, large iguanas and spiders, basilisks, and the occasional monkey. There are also a good number of paths that run through the surrounding rainforest which really lets you feel like you're deep in the jungle despite the fact that the huts are not far away at all. Try doing at night!

The eco-friendly design of the rooms (no AC) is very effective not only for cooling but also for insect control. Ceiling fans draw air through bug screened openings in the ceiling which creates a draft that blows down on you when sleeping and at the same time creates an airflow that rushes out the doors and windows, keeping bugs out. I hate bugs in my room and found the design to be effective (although mosquito activity was very low during my stay). The structures and connecting pathways were also impressive, clean, and beautiful.

At the time I was staying there, they were just finishing the construction of some new units closer to the river. The white noise of the river might be enough to drown out the road noise. Otherwise, bring earplugs and don't eat at the restaurant.

Room Tip: Ask for a room close to the river.

Selva Verde is woven into a rainforest with rooms and many walkways raised one level above the ground. The woodwork on the raised paths and rooms is beautiful. The rooms are very spacious, clean and well-appointed. No AC (not expected) but good fans.

Great bird and butterfly watching, including a botanical garden and hillside paths across the street. A suspended walkway across the Sarapiqui River leads to acres of rainforest hiking requiring a guide. Do not be surprised if howler monkeys wake you up at five in the morning. Time to wake up anyway to go on an early morning birding walk.

Food was basic, but good. Beef dishes were chewy, often typical of grass-fed cattle. Fruit selection at breakfast and available piazza at dinner were excellent.

Friendly, welcoming staff. Look forward to returning.

Room Tip: The further from the road and the closer to the river, the better the location.

The Lodge enjoys a tranquil setting and is maintained immaculately, the guides are first class and the excursions well worth it,particularly the bird-watching trips.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would love to return.
If you get a chance include this in your itinerary,we loved Costa Rica in general and this was our favourite place.

The lodge is located near a 500 acre Sarapiqui Rainforest preservation area which is a short walk across the Sarapiqui River using a hanging foot bridge. We didn't stay at the lodge but drove down from La Fortuna for the day (about and hour-and-a-half drive each way on very good roads). We hired Erick Guzman of Taraba Tours (http://www.tarabatours.com/). Erick grew up in the Sarapiqui valley and knows this rainforest very well. He visits here so often, he seems to knows exactly which leaf to look under and find something unusual. He speaks fluent english as he's also a guide in the US during the summer.

Our tour took about three hours walking on level, packed foot paths. We saw Howler Monkeys, many types of Reptiles include Poison Dart Frogs and Lizards as well as various flowers and unusual plant life. Erick could explain with great detail and enthusiasm about each contributor to the ecosystem.

The lodge is fantastic in every way...clean, beautiful surroundings with lots of bird attracting plants, food is simple and good. Even when relaxing on the balcony outside our room we could watch birds right in front of us as all the rooms are at first floor level. The walks in the grounds allowed us to see plenty of colourful frogs and birds. We went rafting on the river which was wonderful. Staff are friendly & helpful.

Stayed here three nights during a bird-watching trip to the rainforests closeby and the grounds of
the lodge itself. Just about everything about the lodge was excellent - location, amenities, food,
drink, prices, birding, room, rainstorms each evening (delightful), flora and fauna. One can bird
from just outside the restaurant overlooking feeders all day long - can't be beat. River level
goes up and down daily depending on the rain. A birders delight !

Room Tip: Close to the river
