“Great Costa Rican home base”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

We used Adventure Inn as our home base while we were in Costa Rica, and it was perfect. The management (Eric) helped us with thorough, prompt answers to all of our questions about transportation, car rental, tours and cell phone needs. The hotel’s shuttle van met us at the airport – what a relief to arrive and find someone waiting for us! The hotel itself was fun, clean and comfortable. Our room was large and comfortable, we loved having free phone calls home, and our kids loved the pool! The food at breakfast was delicious and plentiful – we especially enjoyed having local (unusual!) fruits to try. We especially loved the neighborhood—we walked to a local chocolate store, grocery store, restaurant and mall, and felt we were in a safe neighborhood that made us right at home. The management had made arrangements for our ½ day tour to Poas Volcano, our 3-day trip to Tortuguero, and our car rental, all of which were excellent. The Poas tour had a helpful, educational guide and was a great introduction to the country. The Tortuguero trip was the highlight of our vacation – see our review of Turtle Beach Lodge for more details. The staff of Adventure Inn went out of their way to help us, from finding hot tea for my daughter in the middle of the night when she was sick, to fixing us a breakfast for the road when our tour left before the breakfast buffet began. We were so glad we had made arrangements to stay here again the night before our flight home, and recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a safe, helpful, family-friendly hotel that is a taste of the local culture.

We stayed here two nights in mid-August after completing a Caravan tour. We had a lovely stay. Big room which was very, very clean. The maid went above and beyond in rearranging our wet gear (after we had gone white water rafting) to maximize drying out of our wet stuff. The taxi service, free breakfast, lounge with computers and wifi and free long distance calls were wonderful and a great cost savings. The Adventure Inn is also very convenient to the airport. The front desk was very helpful in arranging a great private driver to take us to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Although the tours offered by the Adventure Inn sounded amazing, we had done many of the things already on our Caravan tour and the front desk suggested the private driver to La Paz. What a lovely day trip. We thought the hotel price was very reasonable considering all the amenities like the free breakfast, free airport shuttle, free wifi and computers and free telephone calls. The free breakfast was great and included an expanded continental breakfast buffet followed by ordering hot breakfast entrees off a menu. Even if the hot breakfast were not served, the buffet portion of the breakfast was still quite extensive. I had debated whether to give 4 or 5 stars to the hotel but ended up giving 5 stars because no place is absolutely perfect and the only drawbacks we experienced were very, very minor. The pool was lovely, but a bit too cold. The hot tub was really only warm. The service at breakfast was very good, but not a lot of service was required due to the self-service buffet, except for the ordering and serving of the hot part of the breakfast. We ate dinner at the hotel both nights. The service at dinner was not bad but was not great (we had to ask for water three times and we were never asked if we wanted another beverage or if everything was okay.) Again, these last couple of items were very minor and we had a very nice stay overall. We would definitely stay here again if we return to Costa Rica.

Room Tip: We enjoyed our large "family" room with three queen size beds on the second floor.

We stayed here one night before heading to the airport in San Jose. The rooms are old and dingy but the interior of the hotel is acceptable. The good things about the hotel is that they offer a free breakfast (which was gross), wifi, free international calls and a shuttle to the airport. Don't pay full price for the room - it is not worth it. We got 20% off our bill by mentioning the Adventure Hotels of Costa Rica when booking (which Adventure Inn belongs to) and by paying in cash. This is an ok place for one night but not for any longer.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the perimeter of the hotel otherwise guests walking through the common areas can s...

I am not sure what else we could have done to satisfy this reviewer. Our 'gross' all-you-care-to-eat breakfast served from 6 to 10 am consists of two parts. First is the buffet, with several varieties of exotic fruits, two different fresh home-made fruit juices, home-made banana bread, Costa Rican cheese, choice of cereals, milk, toast, jam, peanut butter, and freshly made Costa Rican coffee or tea. The second part is where we take your order for eggs or omelets any style, macademia and banana pancakes or French toast with maple syrup, gallo pinto, home-style potatoes, crisp bacon, ham or sausage. People call our free breakfast amazing.

Our 'old and dingy rooms' were built in 2001, most are quite bright and spacious, with smooth cool tile floors and are smoke-free with two new orthopaedic hotel quality queen beds, new bed spreads, five fluffy pillows on each bed, air conditioning, a remote controlled ceiling fan/light, a 27 inch T.V. with 60 cable channels, a direct-dial telephone, a coffee maker, an in-room safe, a writing table and chairs, a six drawer dresser and large mirror, an armoir wardrobe, a large modern tiled bath with an amenity basket full of shampoos, conditioners, body creams, a sewing kit and hair net, a hair dryer, most baths even have a bidet, and daily maid service (what are we missing?). Combine this with four free guest computers, free WiFi throughout, free international phone calls, free airport transfers before and after your international flights, great service, I'm not sure where we went wrong here. Something must have upset him to write a review like this.

We stayed here on our first night in Costa Rica before heading off to Monteverde. It was great. The staff was super-friendly and helpful. The pool is nice, and there is a gym and a bunch of computers that you can use, as well as wifi. It was clean and nice, and it was great to have someone meet us at the airport. The restaurant was good too.
The only con is that there is not much around it, however there is a pretty good supermarket and drug store within walking distance, and there is a bus stop close by (though we didn't venture into the city.)

We are in a tranquil area offering a nice walk past the duck ponds among the well-appointed homes spread around the exclusive Cariari golf course, we have two nearby casinos, a large souvenir store, a new bowling alley, a small mall with an upscale Fresh Market and ATM, a large mall for shopping, banking and a Cineplex, and several eating establishments all within walking distance. Venturing into central San Jose with its Central Market, shopping and night life is no problem using very convenient public buses or one of our taxis. But you'll certainly enjoy returning to the safer, quieter, less polluted and less congested neighbourhood of Adventure Inn.

Booked a last minute reservation here when we missed our connecting flight from San Jose. It was so helpful that if the hotel cannot send a shuttle to pick you up (as in our case because of the last minute reservation) they give clear directions on their website of which cab to take and that they will reimburse for the cab fare. This gave us a lot of peace of mind. The breakfast that is included is excellent, though the local fruit they put out is often not yet ripe and if you are not familiar with the local food you might think you don't like the fruit, but it just wan't ripe yet! It was a little pricey, but the breakfast made up for it.

Room Tip: The upstairs rooms seemed better and out of the way of high traffic areas.

Part of travelling is experiencing foods the way the locals eat them. Unripe jocotes and mangos with a little fresh lemon juice and salt is quite popular in Costa Rica. We also put the ripe jocotes and mangos, and several other fresh exotic fruits on the breakfast buffet so you usually have some nice options to choose from.

Stayed here on our last night during a week in Costa Rica. Everything was great, and the staff went out of their way to be exceptionally helpful in sorting out some last minute details. Amenities were perfect. International calls, ride to the airport (waiting for us when we finished breakfast). This place is a an exceptionally great way to begin and end your trip, and would be a good way to do a San Jose based vacation, with excursions to places like Puerto Viejo, Monteverde, and Arenal (which we did). We ended up driving (which can be a bit too much of a thrill in Costa Rica), and spent a lot on the rental car. A good alternative would be to take excursions and stay here in between. We probably would have saved money, and reduced our stress by a lot. (Driving from San Jose to Monteverde, Monteverde to La Fortuna, and La Fortuna to San Jose is something you probably only need to do once in your life, especially during the rainy season. It's much more terrifying than the zip lines.)

Room Tip: We were over the bar, and did not have any problem with noise, but it was a quiet evening, so it mig...

The Adventure Inn is THE place to stay if you are staying in San Jose. They will help you with anything you need. They are friendly and reliable. They provide free shuttle service to and from the main international airport, and they will help you arrange cab service to smaller airports. The hotel room is clean and very comfortable. They have WiFi and computers with internet access, a pool, and a great atmosphere. I highly recommend that whether you are just passing through San Jose or staying there, you check this hotel out. It is great!

Room Tip: Some of the rooms with windows on the pool side can be a little noisy if people are in the pool.
