“Good hotel when passing through San Jose”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2009

Since my boyfriend has business in San Jose, I came along for a leisure trip. The Marriott is one of the better hotels in San Jose. The restaurant is decent, the pool is less than impressive and rooms were boring. It seemed a lot like an airport hotel.
The concierge was the best I had ever worked with. Each recommendation he gave us was stellar.

I have stayed at Marriotts around the world from Australia to Curacao this has to be the worst managed Marriott ever. Our problems started at check-in, the hotel has an unwritten policy of "reserving" money on your charge card for incidentals. In this instance, our three day stay only totaled approximately $650.00 they in turn put another $600 on our credit card ($200 per day) to cover as they explained possible "additional charges." When we tried to check out we discovered that they could not remove the extra money without a lengthy process that will take several days pass our departure.

To make matters worse, they have another policy of not changing the beds but once every three days. Well, my husband accidently dropped candy on the sheets, it did not matter to the hotel, and we had to sleep on it for the duration of the stay.

Also, the room was starting to show its age, there was an obvious leak in the roof (we were on the top floor) and the brown stains were very visible, and it is apparent they had been there for a while, the paint around the leak had started to peel. Also, the shower rod in the bathroom was falling out of the wall (it was barely up) that did not seem to bother them, they made no effort to repair it while we were there.

Service at the hotel is slow or non-existent, we called for ice three times before someone bothered to show, up at least an hour later. We talked to other guests, on the way to the airport, who also complained about the lack of service.

The food in the hotel is grossly over-priced and pretty tasteless. The best deal was from the Tapas bar but you have to piece together a meal. I got the seafood soup in the main restaurant and it was a tasteless mess; I did not bother to eat it, in other words, it was a waste of money.

Lastly, do not believe the description that the hotel is located in San Jose; this place is far from the San Jose city center in a remote location. It will cost you dearly to travel into town. I would stay at the Hotel Intercontinental (it is near a brand new mall) or even the Best Western, at least they have an on-sight casino, before staying here again, this was just not a good experience, all around.

This is a very nice hotel. The rooms are on the smaller size, but we didn’t stay in the room that much. Ask for a room overlooking the pool as opposed to the golf course. By the way, the Olympic size pools is more than 25 yards and the water is cold the way water should be in a swimming pool. Most of the guest who swam laps did so early in the morning to beat the rush. The property also includes a nice size gym with standard equipment and two tennis courts. The food in the concierge lounge is great. Overall, this is a nice hotel to stay when you first arrive in Costa Rica.

Very pleasant and safe hotel with nice grounds for walking and with a golf driving range.
The two-pool area has ample beds and shade but the pools are a bit cold and the jacuzzi was not working.
Being Marriott Gold members we were upgraded to a room with a balcony with table and chairs which had the sun shining on it most of the day. The room was sufficient and we did not notice anynoise from other rooms. The Executive lounge had an honour bar for alcoholic drinks and the food was basic but ample. There is a variety of restaurants in the hotel and you can eat as cheaply or expensively as you wish.
Although the hotel is a bit isolated, there is a variety of tours to be taken but arranged through a travel agency rather than the concierge. The San Jose city tour was not very exciting apart from the Theatre and the museum.
This is a reasonable hotel for a short city break in the San Jose area.

Stayed here our last night in Costa Rica to be close to the airport. Hotel itself has an hacienda setting and is beautiful but is overpriced and located in an industrial area with a 20 minute drive to the city. We were allowed to park our rental car at the hotel free of charge. Our hotel room on the third floor had paper thin walls which meant we could hear our next door guests and footsteps upstairs. We had dinner at Antigua - their drinks are great! This is the kind of Marriott, including staff and food, you would find in the U.S. - so, if you are looking for a "Costa Rican experience," this is probably not the place for you. If weather permits, be sure to check out the rather cool pool area.

My wife and I stayed here one night after flying into San Jose. It's a short trip from the airport, but still in the middle of nowhere. It's stuck between farmland on the right hand side and a suburban neighborhood on the left. The whole area itself doesn't look to 'inviting.' BUT - the hotel does have a lot of security once you're on hotel grounds. The hotel itself is beautiful and the rooms are clean and spacious. The grounds are quite pretty and well maintained. The front desk staff were really friendly. My wife used Marriott points to stay here. However, I don't think I would pay to stay here. I don't think it's worth the price since everything about it is pretty average and the location is bad.

  • Liked — the staff and the hotel grounds
  • Disliked — the location

stayed at this hotel upon arrival into san jose. the rooms were excellent, the staff friendly and accomadating, the grounds were beautiful. I would have stayed an xtra night if I had known it was so nice. the hotel archetecture was also marvelous, the room doors had to be 300 lbs each!! Ate dinner at the tapas restaurant one night: the best dinner we had of our entire trip!!! shuttle picked us up at the airport with no problems, booked an excursion with diana with tam travels onsite without problems as well.

  • Liked — grounds were beautiful
  • Disliked — was in a goof area, off the ground, but was close to the airport
