“nice atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

We stayed here one night when arriving in Costa Rica, went to Tulemar in Manuel Antonio for the week, and stayed here again one night before flying back to the U.S. The first night we enjoyed drinks in the lounge, and on our return, went to the tapas and wine room. The rooms were quiet and nice linens. The staff was friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed breakfast in the cafe. Upon our return to Costa Rica, I would stay here again.

Stayed here for the first night of our trip to Costa Rica and the last night, due to a late arrival and very early departure. For $15, they send a driver for you at the airport and he holds a sign with your name on it. Perfect. The ride to the hotel is not more than five minutes.
I have to say, for our needs, this property fit the bill.
We have to mention the Guest Relations Managers Paola and Allan. They were the ones who made the stay excellent. We were upgraded to a pool view room. Large room, flat screen tv, good size bathroom. Very comfortable bed. Juliette balcony.
Ask for a room on the higher floors for a great view. (We were on 5).
The halls are made of terra cotta tiles so you hear the rattling wheels of the carts and luggage. Nothing to absorb the noise.
We had the buffet breakfast included in our rate. Great omelette station. They will also make you a fruit smoothie with any fruit you want. The staff is really helpful and friendly. We didn't eat anything from the warming trays so cannot comment on that. We also didn't eat anything from the bread and muffin area. The fresh fruit selection was also good.
The pool was pretty with the mountain range in the background. The coffee plantation is beautiful and we got a private tour just by asking a woman we saw where we could see the plants. She stopped what she was doing to walk with us, explaining everything about the process of the plants, beans, etc. So nice.
You can pay your exit tax the night before you leave, at the hotel, so you can save time at the airport on departure day. Just remember to fill out the back of the form (we weren't told to do that so we did it at the airport).
The gift shop is great. Coffee, candy and wood products all made in Costa Rica made the best gifts to bring home. You can charge everything to your room. Next to the gift shop is a nice bakery.
We ate dinner off the grounds at Kiantis Restaurant (three minutes from the hotel in San Antonio de Belen). Great Costa Rican restaurant ($5 taxi ride). The food and service were great. Very casual.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor overlooking the pool.

This is a beautiful resort with excellent dining and great facilities, including pools, spa and fitness center. Attentive, friendly staff. Only complaint is that it is isolated. It is a $25 cab ride to downtown San Jose. We did go into the city to visit the museums and also to have dinner at Grano de Oro ( a must). If you like hanging out at a resort, this is great.

Room Tip: Rooms are great with beautiful views. Try to get away from main entrance because there are of events...

I've been staying at this hotel for short pre-cruise stays for more than ten years, however this was a single destination stay of a week. The grounds are magnificant and service excellent. Small problems (non-working refrigerator) were remedied quickly. It is very difficult to find healthy food on the menus--even a chicken fillet sandwich would be an improvement. The Club Lounge had breakfast (including omelets Wed-Fri) and appetizers in the evening (although cilentro tended to dominate most offerings). My package included the buffet breakfast (which I believe was priced at $30 US) which was very nice (including omelet and smoothy stations), but not a good value in my opinion. In both the Club Lounge and the breakfast buffet, food in the chafing dishes generally was not hot. A resort of this grandeur should offer evening entertainment--a player piano in the upstairs bar/lounge was only playing once (and that was during the day). Pool attendants were responsive, although drink service seemed to take quite a while. Services in the new Spa building are subject to a 10% spa fee (although there was no resort fee). It's a beautiful, relaxing resort and well situation for touring and I will return.

Room Tip: If travelers are arriving by air, I would recommend pre-reservations with the hotel for transportati...

My husband and i stayed one night at the Marriott to start off our Costa Rica vacation. It is located near the airport and had lovely grounds.

We enjoyed a late dinner in the tapas restuarant and nice breakfast in the temporary executive lounge. The executive lounge was closed for cleaning/renovation.

The staff was helpful and they also had a nice gift shop.

I would stay here again for a night or two when flying in or out of San Jose.

This is a very nice Hotel if you like "Hacienda Style" architecture. We stayed 4 Days, Service was great, all staff we encountered were super friendly & helpful. Hotel property well kept!

Our room was good (449) we had a nice balcony, not too impressed with the lock on the sliding glass door! Executive lounge was definitely worth the cost!

Down sides:
Essentially only one Restaurant (they do have a seperate Coffee shop that also serves Sandwiches) I was underwhelmed with the Menu, food always took a long time.
The Hotel has NO entertainment what so ever, it is somewhat isolated one cannot walk to another Restaurant, Night Club, Store, etc, this makes going out for a meal quite expensive (Taxi fares)
I was a bit shocked at the prices; everything carries a 13% tax and a 10% Service charge
Room US$ 200.00 (plus above) evening Main course in the Restaurant (either one) $ 25 - 30 plus, Glass of Wine / High ball $10.00 Beer $9.00 etc.

As I said nice Hotel, but... I probably would not stay there again because of lack of entertainment options and cost

Room Tip: 4th floor with Balcony is great

All the comforts of a Marriott resort with very convenient proximity to the airport. While the area around is very industrial (though some decent neighborhoods to the west for runners) the grounds are impeccable and facilities fully modern. The gym is excellent and the pools very pleasant. Staff are polite, though sometimes few and far between.

The gripes:
- The hotel can be loud at night. The format seems to carry sounds of doors and voices throughout the tiled halls, the wind can be fierce simply due to the geography and because it has event halls, if your timing is right you might catch a rowdy wedding that goes late into the night (as we did)
- the pool is frigid
- when we tried to find lunch at the coffee shop on a Sunday, they were out of the first 4 things we wanted... No salads at all, and limited ingredients for sandwiches. It was the night after a large wedding, but to run out of food was surprising.
