“Great welcome to Costa Rica”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

This is an expansive hotel on a large property that was once a coffee plantation. Some of the coffee plants still exist around the grounds. The facilities here make it more of a resort than a hotel and being out of the city the selection of activities and dining on-site are well appreciated. The hotel is near to the airport which was convenient after we had been travelling for a long time and we wanted to get to our room as quickly as possible. We arranged a private pick-up from the airport which was organised through the hotel. From the moment we were met at the airport through to the check in process all the staff were very friendly and helpful. This made our first visit to Costa Rica pleasant and memorable.

Everything you expect from a Marriott property and more. The staff is great and even keep the tapas restaurant open late for us. The rooms are pretty standard for Marriott but e grounds are wonderful. I will stay again and recommend this hotel to anyone needing a place near the airport. The staff and concierge lounge staff make this a perfect place.

The Marriott San Jose Hotel in Costa Rica is built in a hacienda style with beautiful grounds in a quiet area near the airport. The building is beautifully decorated with a lovely interior courtyard. Many rooms have views of the mountains surrounding San Jose. All public spaces and rooms were immaculately clean and comfortable. At night, they lit electric candles in the public areas which were very pretty. The restaurants looked lovely and the food was reasonably priced. The executive lounge was very nice and offered a nice selection of food for breakfast and for the hors de oeuvres hours. Drinks were not free in the executive lounge, but were competitively priced. Service everywhere was excellent. The grounds alone are worth a visit. They have two large pools and a hot tub surrounded by lovely landscaping. They offer a spa and exercise room in a separate building. There is a small golf course and other sports facilities, including a measured walking path, on the grounds. There is also a small chapel on the grounds. They have a travel service on the property offering local tours, but we connected with a local guide who offered a more cost-effective solution for our available time. The hotel offered airport pickup service for a small fee which worked very well for us. The only downside is that this hotel is not in the downtown or tourist area if you wish to walk to attractions and outside restaurants, but this was not a problem for us. I highly recommend this hotel. We will return should we find ourselves in Costa Rica in the future.

Stayed five nights over Christmas break (Dec 2012). Had a wonderful time, everything about the property was top quality. Included breakfast buffet was a perfect start of the day. Had access to the executive lounge which provided snacks and drinks further making the stay even more pleasant. Overall, the whole family enjoyed the hospitality and relaxing environment. It is close to the airport, taxi cost was about US$10. Used on-site agency to book excursions to Poas Volcano, Manuel Antonio National Park, etc. Could have saved some money had I pre-planned and booked these in advance (through Viator or Expedia), but still not a bad value. Would definitely stay here again.

Although I stayed here for work, it is a very beautiful hotel and I could stay here if i was on vacation. It used to be a coffee plantation so its big and sprawling with several nature walks on the grounds. The restaurants are very nice but the service is excellent. The pools were a bit cold but the gym and spa were top notch. My only complaint could be that the hotels houses several groups in the 2 weeks I was there it was a large coffee company, a huge wedding, and a drug company. It is not the fault of the hotel but the guests can get loud by the hotel handled it professionally.

We stayed here for two night as part of a Costa Rica tour. This is a modern hotel on the outskirts of San Jose and within a few minutes of the airport. The rooms are spacious, the food is good and the staff very helpful and friendly. Some noise does echo from the corridors to the rooms due to the hard floors.

We used this hotel for our first and last nights in Costa Rica. It's close to the international airport, and fairly close to Tobias Bolanos, the airport that NatureAir uses.

This is a classy property in a beautiful setting - lovely building with attractive Spanish colonial central courtyard and very comfortable rooms with good beds and quality bedding. The food in the restaurants was tasty, the breakfast buffet costly but excellent, worth it.

Negatives:
- The attractive but cold pools, which were quite the shock to the system after heated pools in most resorts and the beautifully warm ocean water.
- The costly internet access and separate charge for computer use. Surely the Marriott can provide free wifi at the rates they charge.

Being an American hotel in cooler San Jose, the Marriott serves as a good transition from the hot hot Pacific and whatever cold destination you have to return to.

Room Tip: If you like to be close to the pool, what seems like the ground floor (actually 2nd floor), the pool...
