“Best place to stay in San Jose”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2012

We have stayed at the Costa Rica Marriott near San Jose airport several times. It is nothing like an airport hotel. It is a large villa with beautifully landscaped grounds, gardens, two swimming pools, tennis courts, sports fields, a gym, and a full-service spa. The service is stellar, the rooms are very comfortable and tastefully decorated, and the breakfast in the Executive Lounge is varied and well prepared. It is worth paying a bit more for an Executive level room so that you can eat the buffet breakfast there, and also pop in throughout the day for free drinks and snacks. We visit family in San Jose, and even though the Marriott is not close to city center or to our family's homes, we will not stay anywhere else!

Room Tip: The ONLY warning is that it can be a little noisy in some of the rooms, those facing the atrium in t...

Well set-up fo the business traveler to Costa Rica.

Kind of a gringo hotel as many folks come and go with relationships lost in the wind.

Tours available through a tour agency within the hotel, the concierge was not helpful.

One of my all-time favorite hotels anywhere... It's designed like an old hacienda with an open courtyard in the middle of the hotel. The staff is amazing, they cannot do enough to help you. I got sick on one of my trips to San Jose and the hotel staff went way above and beyond anything I ever expected to make sure I was ok and got what I needed. Its nice and close to the airport and is a good place to use as your "base" for day trips... although you may not want to leave this beautiful hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the consierge level facing the back of the hotel. The rooms are a litte bigger an...

Was there for a week, loved it

Only concern is that the corridor can be loud, as it is tiles and roller cases make a very loud noise at 4am

Room Tip: Get a room facing the mountains, not the pool

Unlike Marriott's Courtyard Hotel in Escazu, this hotel is a luxurious place to stopover or even as a base for San Jose exploration. It is conveniently located near Juan Santa Maria international airport but seems far from airplane noise as well as industries nearby. It is laid-out with a Spanish colonial theme and has a golf course. There is good security at the front gate, and a friendly check-in desk staff. The hotel is on four levels and our access to the first floor is a bit unusual as it was only from the third by elevator. One soon became used to going up to go down! The grounds are attractive and welcoming; two large pools and soaker pool accommodate many guests. The complex is obviously a wedding destination as well.
Our room was on the smaller side as we were just over-nighting but clean, and comfortably appointed. Courtesy WiFi was available provided you purchased a meal at one of the restaurants and remembered to ask for a password. This is a large complex with relaxing public lounge areas, large bars, and a courtyard for al fresco dining, coffee or just sitting. the hallways are tiled and clean, the only criticism beyond control of the staff, are loud conversations from thoughtless guests which echo far down the corridors. You would think patrons could be more attuned to this.
We ate twice in the large dining area (there is a more intimate tapas restaurant we did not use). For all meals there is a spectacular buffet but we elected a la carte service. the waiters were very friendly and efficient (special thanks to Ruben) and the selections interesting and varied. The food was of good quality but we found it over-salted to a considerable degree. Like elsewhere in Costa Rica, we could have consumed coffee for ever it was so good! We received good value for money and would highly recommend this hotel, especially if you are arriving or leaving from the airport as part of a wonderful Costa Rican vacation.

Room Tip: Watch out for over-salted food; practice noise courtesy to your fellow guests!

We were only here one night but we thoroughly enjoyed it. The hacienda style was so warm & welcoming, just beautiful. The grounds were also very nice including the pools & jacuzzi. The staff was knowledgeable, helpful, & friendly. The rooms were nicely decorated & comfortable. It did get very windy that evening & then it was hard to find somewhere to sit & have dinner that was protected from the wind due to the openness of the styling of the hotel.
The only negative was that there wasn't anything in the area. Since we were only in San Jose one evening, it would have been nice to walk around & see some of the city. But it was close to the airport & that was also important to us.

I landed at night and have been pleasantly surprised. The airport is clean and modern and the cabs were easy and efficient. On the way to the hotel I wondered what I was in for considering my last trip was to Dakar (see my reviews). Upon arrival, I was briefly questioned by a gate guard and let in to the property. It was clean and stylish. It looks like it does in the pictures. The grounds were neatly kept. Check in was fast and easy. My room was spacious and clean and the air conditioning worked perfectly. The lobby had a very nice wine bar and the restaurant had a buffet that was delicious. Food was a bit over priced in my opinion, but overall this was as good Marriot and I enjoyed my stay here.

Room Tip: There are rooms with balconies. Choose one of those.
