After two weeks on the Caribbean coast (Puerto Viejo), my girlfriend and I came across James' s Casa Holanda through a recommendation.

We stayed with James for three full days and two nights at the end of August (2007) and had an amazing time. The house is clean, bug-free and beautifully decorated. We chose to stay in the 'Tickled Purple Room', but any of the guest rooms are gorgeous; the 'Honeymoon Suite' has a private balcony and jacuzzi.

James runs his own tours throughout the central valley. We were picked up from out Interbus drop-off and went to explore InBio park. After, James took us for a great tico lunch and then arranged a meal at the nearby Peruvian 'Inca Grill'.

The next morning, we awoke to a delightful assortment of fresh fruit, home-made breads, coffee and poached eggs (our request). Then, we packed up and James took us on a day-tour to Volcan Poas and the La Paz Waterfalls. It was so nice to be in a private vehicle with the ability to stop wherever we wanted. Dinner that evening was at Casa Holanda, where James made pejibaye soup with fresh french bread, avacado and papaya juice. Dessert was homemade chocolate ice cream, strawberries and a little cafe liquor.

On our final day, James took us to the local central market for a corn & cheese tortilla breakfast and then to the open-air market. As a bonus, we went to Cafe Britt (for some souvenirs).

James is fun, knowledgeable and caring; Casa Holanda is the best place I've stayed at in the central valley.

“Wonderful Stay!”

We stayed with James for the second week of our trip to Costa Rica, and wished we could have stayed longer! The house was beautiful and very clean and the rooms were so comfortable. It is situated on a quiet side street within walking distance to the city of Heredia. We really enjoyed our time there. James was a terrific guide, his knowledge of the surrounding areas was excellent. We had some facsinating conversations about the people and countryside of Costa Rica as we drove. He knows exactly where to go for the best pictures and he took us to some delightful places to eat lunch (that we would have overlooked on our own). Speaking about food, James is a superb cook, what he calles simple meals would be gourmet at my house! We stuffed ourselves at every meal, it was all so good. He was very considerate of our likes and dislikes in food, and mixed some local foods in with more Americanized fare.
If we should go back to Costa Rica, we will definitely stay here again, and we would recommend staying here to everyone.

“had a great stay”

Casa Holanda

We had a wonderful stay at that place with my girlfriend during our trip to Costa Rica. It is perfect for travellers who apprieciate personal approach and do not like standartised hotels.

Rooms are very nice, with AC's and wide beds. The house has a beautiful living-room with a view on a small garden, which the owner has just finished decorating (did it pretty well, by the way).

The most important thing, however, is James' (our host) warm personality. He just manages to make you feel as very welcomed quests in his house. We had to leave this area soon, because we planned to move to the coast, but the place is worth spending more time there.

I stayed here for my last night of my trip. I wish I would have been able to stay longer! James is the owner and host and he is very accommodating and helpful. I loved my room, it had a great view. The house is very clean and well kept. Breakfast was delicious. James is also very knowledgable about the area, and he helped us pick out where to go for dinner.

We chose to stay near San Jose the last two days of our Costa Rica trip (25h anniversary) to be sure that we did not miss our early flight out on Tuesday morning. We got lucky finding
Casa Holanda online. On Sunday we arrived a little early so James took us to the best souvenir shopping we had found in our wanderings. Then he cooked a simple but wonderful meal (extra - but worth it) and we were free to collapse in the Purple Room.

The next morning James got up very early to get us to the pickup point for the Pacuare River rafting trip he had booked for us. It's a great ride in beautiful scenery. That evening James cooked a nice dnner again -- so much better than going out to another restaurant at the end of a 12 day trip. And more good conversation.

The house is beautiful. Not large but wonderful details and very comfortable. James is an artist in many ways and is fascinating to talk with. Make sure you get his precise directions to the house as we would not have found it otherwise.

Two regrets: (1)because we got up so early both days we never got his breakfasts; they are probably terrfic based on his dinners,
and (2) we did not plan a sightseeing trip with James. HIs description of the Poas Volcano area made us want another day to do that.

It was a perfect ending to a wonderful trip to Costa Rica. Thanks James! With any luck, we'll be back.
