“They Treat You Like Family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2009

I stayed four nights @ Hotel Hojarascas and it was wonderful. The family that runs the hotel treats you like family (mi hermano Jose). They have wonderfully healthy breakfasts and provide free to and from transportation when flying into and out of the international airport. I highly recommend this hotel - La Vida Pura. I stayed two nights in Hotel Hojarascas in mid-January and found it to be an excellent value for the money (rate was $62 per night then). It is not the Hotel Bougainvillea with it's excellent gardens, spacious rooms, original art, restaurant and service, but the rates are less than half what you would pay there. And it is definitely several notches above the Hotel Heredia or Hotel Ceus, two of several downtown hotels that anchor the bottom end. The rates include having someone pick you up at the airport (Jose on this visit) and getting a taxi to the airport when you leave - this is a great service to have included. And the desayuno while simple was fresh and diverse (bread, yogurt, fresh fruit, cheese, coffee, more..). They even had it available 45 minutes early so that I could eat before an early morning flight. The only thing that a guest may find unattractive is the location - several blocks from the central square, but it's a short walk. If you and a spouse/companion are taking a leisurely vacation and want to splurge, go to the Bougainvillea. But if you want a decent hotel at an excellent price, stay at the Hotel Hojarascas.

Hotel Hojarascas was a fabulous little gem hidden in the middle of bustling Heredia. We stayed there our first and last night during our trip to Costa Rica. The hotel is extremely clean, very convenient to the San Jose International Airport and the owners make you feel like family. The complimentary breakfast is delicious and served right out of the owner's kitchen. If you need anything, they will take care of it for you. They also have free and fast internet/computers downstairs. If you have a rental car, it is parked in a free and safe lot just around the block. Jose, the owner of the hotel was the sweetest man. His English is not so great, but with my broken Spanish and his broken English, we were able to converse very well. When we left, we felt as though we were leaving someone we had known for a long time. The only thing that we had a small problem with the first night was the temperature of the shower. We were able to figure it out on our 2nd time around though. I highly recommend this hotel to everyone flying in and out of San Jose Intn'l. We had a great experience and will definitely return.

I just read/skimmed through all reviews for this hotel and am not at all surprised that they are all good. I recently spent two weeks there and you can believe all the good things that are said about the hotel and the family running it. What probably stood out the most to me was the lengths that Jose Omar would go to make my stay an enjoyable and comfortable one. Just ask and you shall receive. In his own words, his goal is to provide "service, service, service" (he does speak some English). There may be cheaper hotels in Heredia, and I tend to be quite frugal, but I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Heredia. What you get at this hotel is well worth the cost.

This hotel is truly a treasure. I used to live in Heredia, Costa Rica, which is an offshoot of the capital city, San Jose, and never knew this place existed, but it's been around for almost 3 years. The hotel is extremely clean, the staff is so friendly, and the breakfast is amazing. It is a little bit hard to find, but you just need to tell the taxi driver it is across from the Mas por Menos parking lot. Unfortunately, the hotel is not located in the nicest area of Heredia, but it is fine to walk around during the day. A block away is a great soda restaurant called La Casita. So cheap and good comida tipica. I will definitely return to stay here!! Absoluetly, the best hotel for the price in Heredia.

We can highly recommend this hotel, it's in downtown so you can walk everywhere. The breakfast buffet was amazing. The rooms are brand new (I can tell because I saw them painting them while we were there!). There's a free internet connection, laundry and airport pick-up & drop off. The room is quite small but the bathroom is very big and there's a large closet where you can put your suitcase or unpack your clothes. You feel safe, the front door is locked and the room door is also a proper door. The TV has a lot of cable channels, including HBO!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2008

I stayed at Hojarascas for about five nights total in December and I was more than thrilled with the level of service and the amenities of the hotel. There is free wireless internet, as well as two computers for guest use downstairs (with flat screens, just installed on Christmas Eve!). There are telephones in the rooms, as well as large and very strong fans. They also have a laundry area available to guests for free (bring your own detergent and fabric softener though) from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm. There is a fridge upstairs where you can put any drinks you want to keep cold, as well as an area where you can buy drinks if you need something.

They provide breakfast in the morning.. although we didn't get a chance to check that out, not the biggest breakfast eaters sometimes I guess. Breakfast LOOKED good.

Hojarascas is the first hotel I have stayed at in Costa Rica that provides shampoo, conditioner and soap in the bathrooms. Lots of others have soap but shampoo and conditioner was something I hadn't seen until now. Rooms were kept meticulously tidy and always smelled great after the cleaning (a bonus)!!

The hotel owners are great, very friendly, though they speak very little English. I felt like family. One thing I will say about the hotel is it can tend to get very noisy, I stayed in room 107, and it was very close to a porthole that opens up into the street and the church bells were often very noisy (probably something to do with it being Christmas time as well). Also, when there were people downstairs using the internet, you could hear them if they were at all loud. There was one fellow staying there that was VERY loud, but that was about the extent of my complaints.

Linens were clean and very well kept, as well as towels. They don't provide hand towels in the bathrooms, maybe something for them to think about, though they do provide face cloths, bath towels and floor mats.

All in all, a really fantastic experience and I would definitely go back!!
