I think this could be a great experience for the right traveler. Rather than for the honeymooning couple (which we were) it seems more a place for the experienced traveler or backpacker. Having lived in Thailand for many years I appreciated her insights as a foreigner living in Costa Rica. I found what she had to say an honest view of what she saw and experienced. We learned a lot, and it was interesting to see how things compare to Thailand (rules of land ownership, embassy parties, etc.) She did tell us not to go to the east coast which we decided against for other reasons. However, I do appreciate that she warned us about car thieves and about going into the capital, which we weren't keen on doing anyway. She suggested that when we stopped to eat, to find a spot where we could watch our car and to beware of the common tricks that happen to travelers and their cars. We figured there wasn't any harm in being careful and the more we traveled the more we realized that there must be some truth to it since every cafe we went to always had available places where we could sit and watch our car. Never had a problem with our car, but my husband's brother, wife and 2 year old did about 6 months later. They were at a beach on the west coast and decided to go in the water. While occupied their possessions and car keys were stolen off their beach towels. So all in all I was glad to meet Debbie, take her warnings with a giant grain of salt but take them nonetheless and hear her quirky side of Costa Rica living. We didn't let her sway our travel decisions and were able to enjoy the wonderful stories about her life. I always enjoy a conversation with a person who's had an interesting life. We would not stay there again however as my husband is severely allergic to dogs. However it did surprise him that he did not have any reactions to the dogs while we were there, which was strange since we both thought that they were probably frequent visitors to our room given the smell. Not as clean as we would like but they were actually cleaner than we thought since he was fine the whole 3 nights we were there. My actual rating would be 3.5 stars. I decided to round up since the experience I had there was valuable to me personally.
