“Do not pay good money”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

Bizarrely I was going through old photos of my trip to Costa Rica back in 1998 and remembered the terrible experience we had staying here. Debbie King Inn....hardly a name you can forget. Actually such a terrible experience, we couldn't forget.

Our Loney Planet guide gave this a positive review of Debbie King's inn so we booked up our first two nights in Costa Rica here.

Back in 1998, internet wasn't a big thing as it is today so I didn't really report this place. I did however, wrote several times to Loney Planet and complain they got it so so wrong!!

Like all the bad reviews, it's all true!!! It rings home to me all the points made.

She is nice to you at the start, picks you up from the airport with dollar signs in her eyes trying to book up your whole holiday with her, then you get to know the real Debbie. She got drunk every night and the experience is not pleasant.

My partner lost his bank cards whilst we were on a trip and she wouldn't allow us to use her telephone just to cancel the cards, EVEN if we paid her!!!

She was so unpleasant I demanded to leave, even though we had paid for our stay. As I packed, she grabbed my passport and pushed me aside, telling us we couldn't leave. It's true she locks up her pound which is frightening with all her barking dogs running around the place. I grabbed my phone and started to call the police. Eventually she let us go. I remember looking back, pitch dark as it was 10 o clock at night, we had no where to go, in a foreign land BUT we had our freedom, as they say. Just so glad to be out of there!

The lady is crazy. An experience that stayed with us till this day. Please do not stay here. Save yourself the bad experience. I can not see how the good reviews are reflective of this place unless she set them up herself. Which I wouldn't put pass her.

So glad to see after all these years, people have taken the time to review this atrocious place and am surprised she is still around.

“stay away”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

had a terrible time here , find a better place for less money
has a nice view of the city , but very noisy, many dog barking night and day
rooms are much less than average for the price
coming and leaving the place is difficult as the owner keeps the place locked up and wont give you a key

“"Well worth visiting"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

My husband and I stayed at Debbie's Inn for 2 months. We were surprised at the top service we received while staying there. We rented a 2 bedroom apartment. It was very clean, and nicely decorated. While it was not a 5 star as far as decor it met all of our expectations. Debbie was extremely pleasant and assisted us in planned tours. She met us at the airport and at the end of our 2 months stay she drove us to the airport. With her assistance our stay in Costa Rica was more than we expected. Debbie was fun, and displayed great interest in satisfying our general needs. A perfect hostess. Debbie took us to restaurants and those that she did not accompany us on but suggested to us, were great choices. Our apartment was cleaned twice weekly and fresh towels and linen were supplied. We plan on returning to Costa Rica next year and would think of no other place to stay at than at Debbie's Inn.

“Misleading, Unsanitary and Felt Unsafe”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

My husband and I stayed here a few years ago and had a rather frightening experience. Similar to other reviews, Debbie was all 'niceness' on the phone and even as she picked us up. Once we were on the property, the tone slowly shifted. It was nearing the end of the season perhaps, so we were the only guests (a fact that concerned us once we discovered this). She gave us a long list of do's and don'ts, spoke very rudely about the locals, and told us how she was out of everything because her previous guests cleaned out her kitchen. The place was not clean and seemed to have a layer of dirt/dust all over, and the property in general was not kept up. We probably could have chalked all of this up to just a poor accomodation selection and left it at that, however the conversation with Debbie that night is what really got to us.

She kept asking us if we wanted a drink in the evening, and neither of us are big drinkers so we declined. She then opened up a bottle for herself and started chatting for what lasted hours (we did not know how to excuse ourselves despite some not so subtle hints). She talked of her ex husband who she claimed was out to harm her, hence why she keeps her property locked up, she talked of her evil twin sister and the horrible things she did, she talked of the fame and fortune she had in the UK as an actress (some of this may be true as she has some pictures of herself with a few people up on her wall), she talked of the evil local people and how they are not to be trusted, and she went on and on about how all her guests love her and how they keep coming back. The more she drank, the more her personality changed and we felt progressively uncomfortable. I found it eerie that not one guest was there while we where there. When we finally went to bed that night, must husband said to me, 'i wonder if that sister even exists or is a figment of her imagination'! It freaked me out.

It was a creepy stay and I hope this will help others to avoid a similar experience.

Room Tip: don't go here...

“Terrible. Run down, debris all over.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2011

The roof leaked, a dead rat welcomed me and Debbie was less than gracious. I had to call the police to get out. She forged my name on a receipt. Go anywhere else.
